Isaiah 54:13

And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

God promises His afflicted, tempest-tossed and uncomforted people that He Himself will teach all their children and give them great peace as He rebuilds and establishes them in righteousness far from oppression and fear. It belongs to restored Zion's future glory and to His work for His people in the last days. To be taught of the Lord means the Father draws people to Christ by enlightening the heart through the Spirit to feel need of a Saviour, so that all who truly hear and learn come to Jesus and gain a living experience of righteousness with the Father and the Son. He teaches only through the Son as Mediator, so that in seeing and hearing the Son they see and hear the Father, and to claim God as teacher without coming to Christ is vain. All children so taught will have great peace, and God Himself stands behind that promise, which true faith lays hold upon to receive peace and spiritual joy through the Holy Spirit. The promise lays duty on parents to see that their children are taught of the Lord from the very beginning of life, with the Lord as chief instructor and parents as under-teachers passing on Christ's lessons as young minds can receive them.

Promise and Its Setting

The promise is spoken to God's people in their afflicted, tempest-tossed and uncomforted condition, assuring them that He Himself will instruct all their children and grant those children great peace. That instruction and peace come as He rebuilds with fair colors, lays foundations with sapphires, makes windows of agates and gates of carbuncles, and sets pleasant borders. At the same time He establishes them in righteousness far from oppression, fear and terror, so that they are secure against all who rise against them. It belongs to the future glory of restored Zion and to His work for His people in the last days, when they see His salvation and look for it to continue.

The promise stands within the prophecies of Christ's work in Isaiah 52-54, given to be studied for help and blessing to His people. Such study is for the time when the liberty of Christ's church is endangered, sustaining true missionary work both in public ministry and in house-to-house labor. It keeps courage when oppression of Christ's church appears as victory for transgressors of the Sabbath, and brings God's victory with sanctified ability, wholehearted work, and unity in proclaiming present truth.

Taught Through Christ

To be taught of the Lord is to be drawn by the Father to Christ, the heart being enlightened by the Spirit of God to feel its need of a Saviour. That drawing was no new doctrine but the fulfillment of the promise in Christ's ministry, which expounders of the word should have thoroughly understood. Everyone who has truly heard and learned of the Father comes to Jesus, recognizing Him as the revealer of the Father and coming to the Father through Him. Through His grace each soul so drawn works out a personal experience of righteousness by keeping a living connection with the Father and the Son.

God never appears in person to teach the way of life, for humanity could not endure the vision of His glory for a moment. He teaches only through the Son as Mediator between God and His disobedient children, so that in seeing and hearing the Son they see and hear the Father. Knowing the Father comes only through Christ, whom the Father draws people to by love. To claim God as teacher while refusing to come to Christ is vain, and only those who resist that drawing refuse to come.

Jesus Himself was taught heavenly things by God. Mary was His first human teacher, teaching Him from the scrolls of the prophets. He did not receive instruction in the synagogue schools nor from the rabbis.

Peace of God's Children

In restored Zion all those taught by the Lord receive great peace. God Himself stands behind that promise, which shows His people to be a joyful people. True active faith reaches up to lay hold on God in the promise and receives peace and confidence and spiritual joy through the Holy Spirit, producing a cheerful disposition and a life full of faith that glorifies God and reveals what true religion does. The teaching that brings this peace offers youth an inducement to rightdoing not by silver and gold but by revealing the love and mercy and grace of Christ, the preciousness of His Word, and the joys of the overcomer. The promise is to be brought to the Lord in prayer and proved true by patient labor and prayer to instruct children according to the light God has given, with the Lord cooperating with such efforts so that children respond, and work done in this way lasts throughout eternity.

The promise places duty on parents to see that their children are taught of the Lord and made to understand God's requirements from the very beginning of life. Christ gave His precious life to make this possible, so that children might share the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world through lust. The work is urgent because Satan works with all his powers and with a determination many do not dream of to lead children into folly and astray, to gain control of their minds and to make the commandments of God of no effect in their lives. The Lord instructs His people as they become familiar with His Word and learn the character He requires, and obedience to His law brings health, happiness, peace, and joy.

Great peace comes as part of the blessing of those who keep looking to Jesus and let the light of truth shine through good works that glorify God by restoring the sick and relieving physical suffering. The promise carries conditions of hungering and thirsting for righteousness, putting away all foolishness that distracts attention, and teaching children the way of the Lord.

Learning God's Word

Right understanding of God's Word begins with asking God in prayer and trusting the guidance of His Spirit rather than relying on study or strength of human intellect alone. God as Author of His Word is its only true interpreter, and all must be taught by Him. Such understanding is entreated from the Lord in rich mercy to give understanding.

Those who seek God's light in Scripture with open hearts are taught by God. This teaching leads them to love and practice the truth and to walk in the light of His Word. They rely less on human theories, opinions, and finite wisdom, and they hunger for wisdom from above and from God Himself. Teachers who search Scripture to understand it for themselves and open their hearts to its truth are taught in this same way.

People are taught by the Lord as they learn divine lessons through useful work and the ordinary circumstances of life. Plowing, sowing, tilling, and reaping illustrate God's work of grace in the heart. Daily toil in one's calling can keep the Creator and Redeemer present in thought rather than drawing attention away from God, lead to continual learning of heavenly truth, and help people grow into Christ's purity and image. In whatever situation they are called to serve, they can abide with God.

Each soul must look to God for guidance and be taught and led by Him, gaining personal experience in following the divine Leader in every place rather than looking to human beings for direct guidance. It is worth everything to be where faith can reach out and ask the Lord to lead and guide and direct, and this looking to God is the duty of every soul so that God's work may be done intelligently. Workers in God's cause are to be shaped by the divine pattern and not by human ideas, working humbly with God and depending on Him rather than on other people, for He is the worker's wisdom, sanctification, and righteousness. Seeking Him daily brings the Holy Spirit's guidance.

The Lord teaches those willing to learn from Him the truths of His Word and guides them into the good works and service He has for them, giving direction and opening the way. When they connect themselves with divine wisdom, the Lord Himself instructs His children. This divine teaching gives a clear mind to settle wisely the many weighty questions that come for decision under responsibilities of no ordinary nature, such as directing sanitarium work. It is the Lord's will that those bearing such leadership burdens be taught by Him.

God's messengers on earth, including His aged servants, are taught by God with angels as their guides. Instruction is often given to men by immortal messengers, and angels are the powerful helpers of His chosen messengers. Those so taught stand with the whole armor on to vindicate the truth given them and stand fast as Christ's soldiers ever working on the affirmative side. They do not exchange divine instruction for the teaching of science falsely so called.

Being taught by God requires willingness to carry forward His work in His own way, to wrestle with God in prayer, to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and to humble the soul before Him and walk humbly with Him. Those who are thus taught receive a message from the Lord and go forth with it. The light of truth shines from them as a burning lamp reaching to all parts of the world, God walks with them, and they see His salvation.

Teaching Children and Youth

The promise that all children taught by the Lord will have great peace lays a duty on parents to see that their children are taught of the Lord and made to understand God's requirements from the very beginning of life. Christ gave His precious life to make this possible, so that children might share the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world through lust. The work is urgent because Satan labors with all his powers and with a determination many do not dream of to lead children into folly and astray, to gain control of their minds and to make God's commandments of no effect in their lives.

The teaching called for holds out to youth an inducement for rightdoing not by silver and gold but by revealing the love and mercy and grace of Christ, the preciousness of His Word, and the joys of the overcomer. The promise is to be brought to the Lord in prayer and proved true by patient instruction and labor and prayer to teach children according to the light God has given. The Lord cooperates with such efforts so that children respond to them, and work done in this way lasts throughout eternity.

The Lord Himself is the children's chief instructor, and in the Christian home parents serve as under-teachers, passing on Christ's lessons gradually as young minds can receive them and teaching them the principles of heaven. Being taught by the Lord applies also to teachers themselves, who need God's instruction day by day to be fit to teach others and to model obedience before their students. Teachers thus taught daily by God can lead many to know the truth in Jesus, and children who receive that light and knowledge can share it with others.

As the world comes more under Satan's influence, God's true children desire His instruction, and faithful teachers help the young take on a heavenly character and mold. In schools this means replacing foolish and unessential practices with habits suited and fit for God's sons and daughters, and converted persons so trained learn the lessons God values. God is the teacher of those who seek to learn and follow the light of truth, and He can instruct them where they are through teachers prepared and sent by Him, so they do not need to travel to one particular place to receive a God-given education. He instructs His commandment-keeping people, including medical missionaries who depend on Christ rather than worldly powers and cooperate with God while treating the sick with nature's remedies and the principles of health reform.

Living as Taught People

To be taught of the Lord is a personal call to humbly seek God in prayer and receive the Holy Spirit, and those who do so are fitted to go out with His message and carry the light of truth to the world. His children learn from Him daily as they follow Him in humility, and this continual schooling enables them through the Holy Spirit to represent Christ and show the world a better way. God carries on this teaching through faithful teachers who open the Scriptures and present the truth clearly, so that those who seek truth learn from God Himself, receive truths that sanctify and uplift, have His moral image restored in them, and find salvation.

Being thus taught means learning to speak the words of Christ rather than censuring or blaming fellow workers, praying instead for pardon for one's own faults and for God to bless the efforts put forth, and such converted lips help unbelievers distinguish the human from the divine. All of God's people are His little children to be taught by Him, which means acknowledging dependence on Him for teaching and guidance instead of climbing upon the judgment seat to pass sentence on fellow workers. That taught condition requires faithfulness, courtesy, and sympathy that considers the heavy burdens and circumstances of others, giving them courage to walk strictly with God, revived faith, and shared experience and counsel, taking hold to help them grow and build up rather than discouraging, condemning, and destroying. Men chosen to labor in the cities must be humble, converted men taught of God, who arouse the attention and interest of the people and continually extend the sphere of their labors as souls are converted, so that present truth is preached without delay in the eastern and southern states. God's people are to be taught by the Lord now, and Christ will lead them onward to teach them a deeper knowledge of His Word in the heavenly school.
