Isaiah 61:8

For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

The Lord loves justice and righteous judgment, but He hates and rejects all dishonest, unjust, or unlawfully gained money, service, or worship when it is presented to Him as an offering, and such an offering is worthless in His sight. To His faithful people He promises to guide their work truthfully and faithfully and to establish an everlasting covenant with them in the setting of restoration, when ruins are rebuilt, shame is replaced with double honor and everlasting joy, and righteousness and praise spring forth. No work for God excuses injustice, oppression, or taking advantage of others, and calling an unjust transaction service to God or claiming dishonest gain will benefit His work does not make it acceptable and gains nothing. That robbery He hates includes withholding fair wages from ministers and workers, taking from His treasury for self, using position to oppress brethren and hinder their God-given work, exacting means from the poor until they suffer, and charging excessive fees for medical care, even when done under plea of advancing His cause. His cause must be advanced only by just and honest dealing in purity of heart, justice and equity, and keeping His commandments, and to those who return to such loyalty and uprightness He directs their work in truth and makes His everlasting covenant with them.

Words and Setting

The Lord's declaration that He loves judgment means He loves justice and just judgment. His hatred of robbery for burnt offering means He rejects and will not accept money, service, or worship that is dishonest, unjust, or unlawfully gained when it is presented to Him as an offering, and such an offering has no value before Him. Offerings obtained through robbery or wrongdoing are refused, and withholding what is rightly owed, even while claiming to serve God, stands condemned under this hatred. His promise to direct their work in truth means He will guide the work of His people and His workers truthfully and faithfully, and His promise to make an everlasting covenant with them means He will establish a lasting covenant with those who serve Him.

That promise belongs to a setting of social renewal and restoration. In that setting His people rebuild ruined places, the old wastes and waste cities, and are named the priests of the Lord and the ministers of God. Their shame is replaced with a double portion and everlasting joy, their seed is known among the Gentiles as the seed the Lord has blessed, they are clothed with the garments of salvation and covered with the robe of righteousness, and righteousness and praise spring forth before all nations alongside promised righteousness and salvation and release from suffering. To those who act as His helping hand by opening prison doors to those who are bound, He guides their work in faithfulness, establishes His lasting covenant with them, and gives double for shame, lasting joy, and a blessed offspring acknowledged among the Gentiles.

The chapter containing the verse is understood by heeding the Lord's words and instruction. Understanding comes by putting away complaining and evil work, putting away evil, and by reformation among God's people through repentance and conversion. Such heeding is linked with the Lord showing His power in the conviction and conversion of souls.

Christ and Restoration Fulfilled

Isaiah 61 testifies to the work Christ was to do, and its prophecy shows the Messiah's work was not the political and earthly display the teachers expected but was fulfilled in Jesus' life and ministry. The verse stands among the chapters of Isaiah that define Christ's work of setting God's vineyard right and bringing salvation and righteousness to light, declaring that the Lord loves justice and hates robbery connected with burnt offerings while promising to guide His people's work truthfully and to make an everlasting covenant with them, placed alongside Christ's fulfillment of the Lord's commission and the promised righteousness and salvation. That restoration promise is fulfilled in medical missionary work as the pioneer work of the gospel and in acting as God's helping hand by doing the work Christ did on earth, opening prison doors to those who are bound, practicing the gospel and revealing Christ's compassion, bringing release from suffering, healing the sick, blessing poor suffering humanity, opening new fields, and serving others with Christ's goodness and love, so that the work of ministry is after the Lord's order and His name is constantly glorified.

This belongs to the rebuilding of the old wastes and waste cities, where God's people are named the priests of the Lord and ministers of God, are clothed with garments of salvation and covered with the robe of righteousness, and righteousness and praise spring forth before all nations. To those willing to be used in that helping-hand work God desires to accomplish a wonderful work through His servants, gives those willing a rich experience full of glory, gives double for shame with lasting joy and a blessed offspring acknowledged among the Gentiles as the seed the Lord has blessed, and is waiting to work through His people.

Justice God Requires

Religious purpose never turns an unjust act into acceptable service, and calling a crooked transaction service to God does not make it so. Claiming that dishonest gain benefits His work does not cleanse it, pleading advancement of His work does not excuse oppression or taking advantage of others, and such gain brings no prosperity and gains nothing. He hates robbery even when it is dressed up as worship or burnt offering, rejects practices built on injustice, and will not accept worship or service that rests on robbery, wrongdoing, or unlawfully gained money. Money gotten by theft, fraud, forbidden selfish means, or covetousness has no value as an offering, whether kept for personal benefit or poured into His treasury, and using offerings or religious work to cover robbery violates His will. His cause must be advanced only through just and honest dealings, with purity of heart, upright dealing in every transaction with saint or sinner, purity from selfishness and covetousness, justice and equity, and dealings ordered by the principles of the Ten Commandments. He will not approve injustice or favor those who stain His work with covetousness and avarice, His cause can afford to act fairly and cannot gain anything by depriving people of their rights or individuality, and calling an unjust transaction service to God will not bring prosperity. Trying to secure prosperity for His work while acting contrary to His principles and attributes is vain, for He will scatter faster than human effort can enrich.

Those who exact means by methods that leave people suffering come under His censure and judgment, both the one who does it and all who allow it to be done. Sharp dealing and self-serving management that withholds a just estimate of service, uses position and power to oppress brethren, deprives fellow workers of rightful advantage, hinders the work given them in order to advance one's own interests, or harms a brother's interests under excuse of helping some line of His work, misrepresents His character and is accepted by Him in no zealous or humanly praised form. A plea of doing good does not justify wrong principles of selfishness and oppression, those who so act harm themselves, gain none of the advantage they expect, prove untrustworthy as stewards, and will be brought to strict account because He reads beneath the surface. He has a controversy with prominent men who indulge in such sharp practice, all is recorded in the books of heaven to be brought up in judgment unless seen and repented of, and those who practice it become suspicious of others, judging them by themselves. Robbing Him under cover of worship includes tampering with His Sabbath and dressing up Sunday in Christian garb to present it to the world as worship. When the law is thus made void His people must vindicate and magnify the law and must not compromise because the world transgresses it, for though He bears long with evil He keeps a reckoning with nations.

Promise to Faithful Workers

God loves just judgment and rejects worship offered through robbery, and He directs in truth the work of those who return to loyalty by keeping His commandments and makes His everlasting covenant with them. He requires purity of heart and upright, honest dealing in every transaction with saint or sinner from all who handle sacred things, hating robbery presented as burnt offering. Sharp dealing and self-serving management that withholds a just and equal estimate of service from ministers preaching the Word and workmen in other lines is condemned, and attempting to secure prosperity for His work while acting contrary to His principles and attributes is vain, for He will scatter faster than human effort can enrich. Those who indulge in sharp practice become suspicious of others, judging them by themselves, and He has a controversy with prominent men who do this, with all recorded in the books of heaven to be brought up in the judgment unless seen and repented of, while those who are upright will have their work directed in truth and receive His everlasting covenant.

The same God Isaiah saw in vision lives today and can give enlightenment to those fitting men for a solemn, sacred work. He promises His own direction in truth and an everlasting covenant to laborers together with God for the salvation of those in the shadow of death. That promise rebukes consuming sacrificial time and money in unnecessarily large preparation and prolonged courses of study for students preparing for ministry while time is short, workers are few, and the world is to be warned. Believing men and women sacrifice and even hire money to pay tuition and expenses, so their resources and time given for the work must not be wasted but the work conducted justly.

He rejects taking what is common or forbidden and presenting it as an offering, condemning selfishness and covetousness in church and institutional work. When these are removed, His righteous ways can be seen and Christ leads the redeemed in the right path. His hatred of offerings associated with robbery requires justice in dealing with people, so that withholding fair payment from women for the time they labor alongside their husbands is wrong. The call to truthful dealing fits the duty to show compassion and help a brother who has been humiliated by his mistakes and is in need.

Fairness to Fellow Laborers

The Lord's love of just judgment and hatred of robbery joined to burnt offering forbids withholding what is rightly owed when the withholding is then presented as service or offering to God. To deny His ministers fair wages for labor in advancing His cause, or to limit their pay unjustly and selfishly while claiming to serve Him, is such robbery and wrong, and He hates it. Their rights are valued by God, and fairness and generosity require giving them the remuneration they have been led to expect and the resources to carry out good work. Upright, honest dealing is required from all who handle sacred things in every transaction with saint or sinner, with purity of heart and a just and equal estimate of the service of ministers preaching the Word and of workmen in other lines, rather than sharp dealing and self-serving management.

Withholding workers' just pay while accepting their labor for God is robbery presented as an offering, which God rejects because it depends on unjust dealing. This includes withholding women's pay, for women who labor alongside their husbands in time and effort are to be paid for their time and labor. The call to truthful dealing in the verse also belongs with showing compassion and helping a brother humiliated by mistakes and in need.

Taking from God's treasury for self, confederating to grasp all possible gain, taking large pay for one's own work while restricting others and denying them fair due and the opportunities and means Providence gave them to labor, is robbery that God hates even when done under plea of advancing His work. Bringing a God-given book under selfish control to absorb all its profits and deprive the author of what God designed him to have for work in the vineyard is the same robbery, and unfair treatment of authors and selfish schemes to control books dishonor God and He will not uphold them. God rejects any offering or service gained by harming a brother's interests or placing brethren where they are hindered from doing the work God gave them for truth and righteousness, even when the excuse is helping a certain line of His work. Using position and power to oppress brethren, depriving fellow workers of rightful advantage, and hindering the work God gave them to do in order to advance one's own interests cannot be justified by a plea of doing good, for working on wrong principles of selfishness and oppression misrepresents Christ, harms the doer, gains none of the expected advantage, proves untrustworthiness as a steward, and will be brought to strict account, since God reads beneath the surface and accepts no selfish or unrighteous deed however zealous or praised by men.

The same hatred of robbery connected with offerings condemns dishonest dealings in God's work and exploiting worshipers through unfair prices for sacrificial animals, for such conduct dishonors God and must be rejected. Those who value their souls must guard by grace against the first tinge of unfairness in deal and the first approach to ungodly, grasping worldly practices that prevailed in the days of Noah and Lot. Those who indulge in sharp practice become suspicious of others, judging them by themselves.

Integrity in Means and Service

To demand money or service for God's cause from the poor who have no power to give it is robbery for burnt offering which He hates. When money is exacted by methods that leave people suffering hunger or want of clothing, and every dollar is taken for the cause while needy families are deprived of bread, judgment falls on the one who demands it and censure falls on all who allow it to be done. His cause is very large and very liberal and includes duty to the poor, so ministers or lay people must not demand what the poor cannot bestow, and faithfulness He approves never impoverishes them to fill the treasury. People Christ gave His life to save are more precious than money placed in the treasury. Charging excessive fees for medical work or medical care, even when the money is claimed to be for God's work or service, is robbery gained unjustly and offered in His service. Such charges misrepresent God and bring judgment, and His representatives must deal justly and let mercy and love govern their charges.

Gifts from liquor dealers cannot be made acceptable by generosity. Their money is stained with blood, and giving it to the church does not cover guilt. Money raised for the Southern field that was misappropriated instead of being used for its intended work, and dishonest charges that took money from people supporting that work, are dishonest taking in the name of religious service which God hates. Taking or withholding money from a mission field through selfishness and then offering inadequate restitution is likewise robbery and injustice He hates. He calls for honest work and full restitution, with justice, mercy, equity, and truth guiding the work.

Consuming sacrificial time and money in unnecessarily large preparation, prolonged courses of study, and needless education for those fitting for solemn, sacred work is condemned as robbery for burnt offering. This is so while time is short, workers are few, the world is to be warned, and believing men and women sacrifice and even hire money to pay tuition and expenses, whose sacrifices must not be used to fund waste. Those overseeing education must not waste the time and resources given for preparing workers, but must direct their work faithfully and truthfully toward the urgent mission of saving souls in dependence on God. God who lives today can give enlightenment to those fitting men for this work, promises to direct their work in truth, and will make an everlasting covenant with them, calling for speedy preparation and service guided by His Spirit and fitted to the work at hand. Money obtained unlawfully or by theft and fraud for personal benefit or to enrich God's treasury, and taking or diverting funds unjustly in the name of His service, are unacceptable to Him and have no value as an offering even when claimed for a good cause.
