Jeremiah 19:12

Thus will I do unto this place, saith the LORD, and to the inhabitants thereof, and even make this city as Tophet:

The declaration was carried out as a public act in the valley of the son of Hinnom in the presence of the elders of the people and the elders of the priests, following a rehearsal of Judah's apostasy. Its meaning for Jerusalem and its inhabitants was that the same defilement and doom belonging to Tophet would be brought upon the city itself. It meant this people and this city would be shattered like a potter's earthen flask, smashed beyond any possibility of being made whole again. The breaking was performed as a visible illustration of the character of the judgments about to fall swiftly, because the sentence of doom already spoken was hardly comprehended and a deeper impression had to be made.
