Jeremiah 20:11

But the LORD is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten.

The Lord is personally with His servant as a mighty protector while persecution is faced. That presence is mighty and fearsome, an awe-inspiring power standing beside the one He defends. Because He is present, persecutors will stumble and will not prevail. They will be put to great shame and will remain in lasting disgrace that will never be forgotten.

The assurance is certain because it comes from One who knows every heart and cannot make a mistake. This confidence in God's presence strengthened Jeremiah to endure while facing persecution. The same protection holds when God's servant is surrounded by enemies, as when Elijah appeared defenseless and alone before Ahab, the prophets of Baal, and Israel while heaven's angels were around him, so that trusting God's presence he could be certain his persecutors would stumble, fail, and face lasting shame. The verse's image also describes Jesus walking through the midst of believers at a remembered time and place.
