Jeremiah 25:5

They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever:

God sent a repeated summons to Judah, addressed to every single person, to turn back from evil ways and from the evil of personal actions, to amend conduct and to forsake the worship of other gods. The persistence of that summons displayed a merciful intent toward an undeserving people whom He had not abandoned, but whose repentance He still sought. He issued it for His own name's sake, in order that His character might be honored among the nations. Obedient turning would have allowed them to dwell on and to continue in the land the Lord had given to them and to their fathers.

Their refusal to listen to that summons brought captivity and punishment at the hands of the Chaldeans. This warning stands among the prophecies Daniel searched concerning the seventy years of Jerusalem's desolation and the promised return from captivity, prophecies plain enough for him to discern that the period of exile was drawing to its close.
