Jeremiah 51:41

How is Sheshach taken! and how is the praise of the whole earth surprised! how is Babylon become an astonishment among the nations!

The praise of the whole earth is a title for Babylon. It describes the city's worldwide fame and splendor. It marks Babylon as the chief glory of Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom, renowned as the golden city.

In this verse Babylon is called Sheshach. Its taking is foretold, with its capture resulting in its becoming an astonishment among the nations. What was once praised throughout the earth would be taken and made an object of astonishment among the nations.

That capture is a dramatic reversal of its former fame. Former worldwide praise gives way to becoming an astonishment.
