Jeremiah 7:14
Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh. Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.
The warning to Jerusalem was that the house called by God's name, in which the people trusted, and the place given to them and to their fathers, would be treated as Shiloh had been treated, so that the temple and its appointed services and the given land would give no protection from punishment for wickedness. Shiloh had been the first place where God set His name, with the tabernacle set up in the center of the land and the ark remaining there for three hundred years. Its fall came through the wickedness of Israel and the sins of Eli's house, and especially through Eli's failure to correct wrongdoing, which allowed sin to flourish and brought calamity. Israel trusted in the presence of the ark for victory, yet was defeated by the Philistines with many deaths and the ark taken. Shiloh was then ruined and made desolate, never received the ark back, its sanctuary service was finally transferred to the temple at Jerusalem, and it sank into insignificance leaving only ruins.
Trust in a place associated with God's name, in sacred status, or in position cannot protect people, nor can it protect what bears God's name from God's action and just judgment, when those responsible are unfaithful. The warning reaches people entrusted with important responsibilities and leaders who neglect faithfulness, forget the simplicity of God's work, ignore His principles, abandon self-denial and self-sacrifice, indulge selfishness and pursue selfish aims, trust in their positions, and follow their own ideas and judgment instead of relying wholeheartedly on divine wisdom and power. God will fulfill His word of judgment against those who trust in His house and sacred place yet reject the light He has given and refuse to hear or see, even as He made Shiloh desolate.
