Jeremiah 8:17

For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the LORD.

The verse declares that the Lord himself will send serpents and cockatrices among a disobedient people. These creatures are of a kind that cannot be charmed or appeased, so no soothing or turning of them aside is possible. Their appointed work is to bite those among whom they are sent, and those bites are divine judgment. The threat is directed against religious teachers who reject God's law and mislead the people entrusted to them. It warns such unfaithful teachers that their course will bring upon them sure punishment from God.
