Job 35:9
By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty. By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.
Job 35:9 stands within Elihu's speeches, which occupy Job 32-37. There Elihu pleads to convince Job of his own smallness and of God's greatness, that Job himself is not very great while God is everything. Job makes no answer to this plea, and no comment is made upon it before the Lord answers Job.
The verse belongs to the book's debate about human suffering, which records what its speakers said, but those statements can be mistaken or misapplied. Though Job's friends generally spoke truths, they wrongly applied them to Job. So the words here about oppression and the cries of the afflicted do not by themselves explain why a particular person suffers or prove that God is displeased with that person.
