Joshua 6:22
But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her. But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.
The command belongs to the capture of Jericho as the first step in the conquest of Canaan, undertaken from Gilgal, Israel's first encampment in the promised land. At Gilgal the twelve stones commemorated the passage of the Jordan, the manna ceased, circumcision was renewed, and the first Passover after the wanderings was kept. The instruction for that capture was given after Joshua withdrew to seek assurance of divine guidance for taking the city. Then Christ stood before him as Captain of the host of the Lord with drawn sword and promised that Jericho with its king and mighty men had been given into his hand.
In keeping the oath to Rahab, Joshua directed the two men who had spied out the country to go into the harlot's house and bring out the woman with her household and all she had. She and her household were spared in Jericho's destruction because she had shown favor to the Lord's messengers. That conquest was a victory with no equal in the history of nations, in which God fought for His people and prevailed by simple means against all the power and skill of a bold, warlike race. The victory must be ascribed to God alone, and news of it glorified the Lord's name, strengthened Israel's faith, and brought terror, shame, and confusion on the surrounding nations.
The conquest teaches that the only sure ground of success is God's help working with human effort, and that those who trust in their own wisdom and skill will surely be disappointed. Humble trust in God and faithful, implicit obedience to His commands regardless of worldly opinion are as essential in spiritual warfare as they were in battle. The presence and protection of the Captain of the Lord's host are assured to those who put on the armor of righteousness.
