Judges 7:9
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand. And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
This command belongs to the history in Judges 6-8 of Midianite oppression and Israel's deliverance, when after the people confessed their sins God raised up Gideon as a deliverer to free Israel from its enemies. It records God's raising of a deliverer and His command to Gideon to go down against the Midianite camp, with the assurance that He had given it into Gideon's hand.
In that same night God told Gideon to arise and go down to and against the Midianite camp and host, because He had delivered it into his hand. That promise assured him of victory before the battle, directing him in the night to go down toward the camp even though he trembled at the coming conflict. The victory that followed came through God's help, by His power and wisdom using simple means, so that its success belongs to God and not to human wisdom, strength, or skill.
God also allowed Gideon to take his servant and go hear the enemy's words, and hearing a soldier's dream and its interpretation confirmed that God had delivered Midian into his hand. That hearing strengthened his courage to act.
God gave Gideon special directions for battle, and his army prevailed because in living faith they followed those directions rather than trusting in numbers. The victory was wrought in a way that prevented Israel from crediting human strength or skill and made clear that God was their mighty King. Gideon's part was to trust and obey God, and the victory strengthened Israel's faith while bringing shame and confusion to its enemies.
The Lord brings the deliverance and must receive the glory, and He may use humble people and simple means rather than human talent or influence. Victory in God's work comes from faithful obedience to His specific guidance, and this rebukes faithlessness and narrow views and narrow plans that accomplish little.
