Nehemiah 3:30

After him repaired Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, another piece. After him repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah over against his chamber.

The work in Jerusalem followed a safe journey secured by royal letters to the provincial governors and by a military escort. The arrival aroused the jealousy of Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian. They watched movements with critical eyes and endeavored by every means to thwart the plans and hinder the work.

The verse records repairs made in separate assigned sections of the wall. Hananiah, Hanun, and Meshullam each repaired a section, with Hananiah the son of Shelemiah and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph repairing another piece. Meshullam the son of Berechiah repaired over against his chamber, working opposite his own dwelling place.

The arrangement teaches that each person should take up a definite part of the work near home. The rebuilding of the wall is a picture of repairing what is spiritually neglected and strengthening the community's defenses. Parents and ministers are therefore called to reform their households and help build up Zion.
