Nehemiah 7:61
And these were they which went up also from Tel-melah, Tel-haresha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not shew their father’s house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel. And these were they which went up also from Tel-melah, Tel-haresha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not shew their father’s house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel.
The verse stands within the register of those who went up from captivity, naming groups of returnees by their places of origin at Tel-melah, Tel-haresha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer. It identifies these companies by locality rather than by assured lineage, placing them among the returning exiles whose geographic starting points are preserved. Of these returnees it records that they could not show their father's house nor their seed, meaning they were unable to establish their family ancestry. That failure of proof left them unable to demonstrate whether they were of Israel.
The verse belongs to the record of Babylonian life in the days of Ezra and Nehemiah. That narrative is confirmed by discoveries in ancient lands adjoining Israel that had dealings with Israel.
