Numbers 32:17

But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

The tribes of Gad and Reuben agreed to first secure dwellings for their families on the east side of the Jordan and then to advance armed at the front of Israel, staying alongside their fellow tribesmen in warfare until each tribe had come into its allotted inheritance. Their having provided for their own households in this way did not release them from part in the common burdens and responsibilities resting upon the entire community. In the same way, those who serve God are not to pursue personal ease and comfort while leaving others to bear the labor and hardship alone.
