Numbers 33:5

And the children of Israel removed from Rameses, and pitched in Succoth.

The verse records the opening stage of the journey from Egypt toward the Red Sea, when Israel removed from Rameses and pitched in Succoth on the way to the promised land. It belongs to the account of Israel's travels in Numbers 33 that preserves the itinerary place names. That account is joined to the directions for the boundaries of Israel, whose immediate discussion concerns the later encampments between Hazeroth and Kadesh-barnea.

The move from Rameses to Succoth occurred on the fifteenth day of the month Abib, the day Israel went forth out of Egypt by divine direction. They carried their dough before it was leavened, with their kneadingtroughs bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders. That fifteenth day of Abib was the day before the sixteenth, which was the seventh day of the week in regular succession from the seventh day on which God rested in the beginning.

That fifteenth day was kept as the first Sabbath of a new order. Thus the next day, which was the true seventh day in succession from creation, was thenceforward reckoned the first day of the week. And the sixth day in the former reckoning was established ever afterward as the seventh day observed by Israel.
