Numbers 4:26
And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.
The verse stands within the directions for taking down and carrying the tabernacle and its sacred furnishings whenever Israel journeyed. Those directions divided the labor by assigning Levite families their own specific duties in the transport. Within that arrangement the care of the tabernacle's curtains and hangings fell to the Gershonites. Their charge included the hangings of the court and the hanging for the gate of the court, together with their cords and all the instruments of their service.
That work was a specific duty entrusted to them, distinct from the tasks assigned to the other Levite divisions. Even the court hangings, cords, and service equipment had designated carriers and were to be handled as an ordered, sacred duty. They were to be taken up and served in an appointed way, not left for just anyone who chose to take the work upon himself.
