Afflicted Man Alone on a Rooftop at Duskby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 102:7

I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top.

The verse pictures lonely, wakeful, distressed watchfulness under the figure of a sparrow alone on a housetop. The sparrow has lost its mate and sits grieving alone through the whole day. It is also a chattering bird on the housetop.

Sparrows abound in Palestine and the Holy Land, making this a familiar sight that confirms the accuracy of biblical descriptions. In its setting the verse is David describing his own lonely mourning. In its setting among the psalms of the Babylonian captivity it reflects the sorrow and distress of the Hebrew captives.

The bird alone on the housetop also pictures a dove cooing alone as a lonely, vulnerable woman who loves and waits without receiving true care, set over against a mountain vulture that has no care for her. The verse is part of a plea for mercy that every true believer may adopt as his own. Even one who is alone and seemingly forgotten is not forgotten by God, who tenderly cares for the sparrow and is with him.

The verse shows the loneliness of a believer driven from house and home, clothes and food and left without friends or brethren because he will not trust false doctrines or join in forbidden fellowship with an apostate church power working through priests under color of law and justice. That far-from-pleasant condition tempts to unbelief about finding provision in the wilderness, yet it is met by God's word that He is with him. It shows a faithful person, brave in spirit yet standing against tremendous odds like a sparrow on the housetop, while his wife and other interested people hold back from taking a decided stand to live the message as they wait to see if the work will have permanent backing. It describes a faithful watcher who feels alone like a sparrow by itself on a housetop, and it applies to the first believer in Fukien who openly stood for what he knew was truth even after those who had first stood with him turned back. God saw his faithfulness, and he was no longer alone, for other believers joined him and the message spread to new places.
