Psalms 119:107

I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word.

The verse stands within a psalm and within the immediate passage of Psalm 119:104-112 that exalts God's law and sets forth God's Word as the rule for life. Its surroundings present the precepts as giving understanding and turning the heart toward obedience to His statutes, so that His Word instructs and shapes a person's life. That Word holds the principles of righteousness and draws a clear line between right and wrong and between truth and error, while His testimonies act as counsellors guiding people in the way they should go.

Taken together with Psalms 126 and 127 before a large earnest assembly, the verse shows that the wickedness of the world has reached the point where the Lord will certainly arise to punish bold and defiant wickedness against His holy law. It lays bare the continuous insult offered to the Lord's holy commandments and the marvel of God's very great forbearance and long-suffering in bearing with the ever-increasing defiance against the laws given to govern the human beings He created. That forbearance is a restraint placed upon His own attributes by omnipotence exerted over Himself, even while He gives continual light to those who remain obedient. It shows that life is becoming intolerable because of cruelty, and this is because men have changed His laws.
