Psalms 19:6

His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

The verse describes the sun going forth daily from one end of heaven and making its circuit to the ends of it, with its heat extending everywhere so that nothing is hidden from it. It runs its course steadily and undeviatingly, coming forth rejoicing as it runs. The verse belongs to the declaration that the heavens show God's glory and handiwork, with day speaking to day and night showing knowledge to all the earth. Nature obeys His command and bears witness to what He has made, and the sun's visible course and universal warmth testify to that glory.

The sun, with the wind, the rain, the snow, and the ice, is His minister to do His will. His hand has molded the mountains and balanced them in their position so they are not moved except at His command. As ruler of the day the sun speaks of Him. Rightly understood, nature reveals His character and the wise and beneficent laws through which He works, agreeing with Scripture and helping people know Him and trust His word.

The psalm binds God's law to His created works. His works together with His word are how He is to be learned so that life fulfills His purpose. To those in touch with Him nature's works point to His eternal kingdom. Nature's ever-varying scenes and recurring seasons constantly present fresh tokens of His glory, power, and love, holding lessons of wisdom and gifts of healing for everyone.

Its light over the landscape turned David's thoughts toward God, whose works are full of praise. The verse calls for turning the mind from the artificial to the natural, lifting the eyes and contemplating what His own hands have created. It calls for never failing to offer thanksgiving and praise for His goodness with joy and adoration. Older students gaining human arts and learning should also seek more of God's wisdom and learn more of His divine laws, both natural and moral, because obedience to them gives life and happiness in this world and in the world to come. True greatness is honoring God by revealing His character in daily life, and faith kept strong in this way gives power to resist temptation as the only real safeguard against sin, since the human heart is inclined to evil and skepticism is dangerous to young minds. Like the sun's steady course, people who listen to God and seek every ray of light from heaven should remain steadfast on an undeviating course and continue to grow in wisdom and favor with God.
