Psalms 74:22

Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily.

Psalm 74 belongs to a group of post-Davidic psalms associated with Asaph and the Babylonian captivity. It was written during or after the captivity of the children of Israel. It reflects the sorrow and desolation of the captives, with their longing for deliverance and their prayers for it.

The verse is a call for God to arise and plead and defend his own cause against the reproach and dishonor directed at him. It supports prayer for God to defend his cause when churches abandon simple truth and let worldly entertainments and practices displace prayer, self-denial, and faithful teaching. It expresses the appeal of the Waldenses as the oppressed after persecution and devastation, crying to God as their refuge to arise for his cause because the attack on them and the destruction of the church that preserved his truth dishonored him.
