Psalms 78:64

Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.

The psalm containing this verse recounts the rich blessings God bestowed upon His people and the poor return they made for those benefits. It sets the fall of the priests by the sword in battle and the grief-stricken silence of their widows who made no lamentation within that history of ingratitude. That desolation came as the sure result of Israel's own course of constantly working against a good God through disobedience. The calamity served as rebuke and chastisement that brought repentance. Yet that repentance was followed by falling again under temptation through self-indulgence and self-gratification.
