Psalms 78:66

And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.

Psalm 78 is the recounting of the rich blessings God bestowed on His people and of their poor return for all those benefits. It stands as the record that the children of Israel worked constantly against a good God.

The smiting of enemies in the hinder parts and the putting of them to perpetual reproach is the sure result of their own course of action coming upon them in rebuke and chastisement for that disobedience.

Under that rebuke and chastisement they repented for a time. Then they fell again when beset by temptation and by self-indulgence and self-gratification.
