Psalms 79:12
And render unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord. And render unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.
The psalm is post-Davidic and belongs with the psalms of the Jewish captivity in Babylon. That group gives voice to the captives' sorrow and desolation, their longing, and their prayers for deliverance. It applies to the time of the captivity when Jerusalem had been brought low and its people scattered.
Bosom means the folded part of a robe, which could serve as a pouch for carrying things. Seven is used here as a representative number signifying fullness or completion, so that the sevenfold measure illustrates that use. The verse asks God to return into their bosom sevenfold the reproach of the neighbors, treating their insult as reproach against the Lord himself and calling for a full corresponding judgment upon them.
