Psalms 84:7

They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God.

Those whose strength is in God keep going forward gaining fresh strength as they go until each one appears before Him in Zion. This is a life of continual advance onward and upward from grace to grace and from glory to glory, growing brighter toward the perfect day as the Spirit enlightens and leads the mind. It comes by becoming more like Christ and moving from victory to victory and character to character, as faith, obedience, prayer, and trial bring strength to overcome and walk in the light given. It requires fresh strength and light each day, since yesterday's blessing cannot meet tomorrow's temptations and responsibilities, and it grows through exercising faith, understanding God's Word, and seeking fuller knowledge of God and Christ. God's people make this advance together, standing on His Word and carrying forward His work with growing faith and power until He gives final triumph to the faithful at His coming.

Journey to Zion

Those whose strength is in God gain strength as they go until each one appears before God in Zion. That advance expresses desire for His presence and a life of faith in steadily renewed strength and worship. Those who journey toward God grow from strength to strength, and as the Spirit enlightens and leads the mind the way grows brighter toward the perfect day. God's people advance in spiritual strength step by step as they follow sound Bible teaching toward appearing before God in Zion. Receiving some light never means its fullness has been reached, for the progress continues onward from one measure of strength to another.

The Christian life is a continuing progress from strength to strength, from grace to grace, and from glory to glory as light from Heaven is received. Strength and illumination are needed anew each day to meet fresh temptations and heavier responsibilities. A daily increase of divine illumination is needed in growing knowledge of Bible truth, since yesterday's light and blessings cannot supply the strength needed for tomorrow. Prayerful growth in knowledge of Bible truth brings the divine light that enables faithful living. Those who follow God are led onward in wisdom and grow stronger as they go, and teachers are to educate children and youth in God's wisdom in this same way and guide them toward Him.

Continual Spiritual Growth

The just are privileged to move onward and upward, growing stronger as they go from strength to strength, from grace to grace, and from glory to glory. This advance is the privilege of every church, and turning away or turning back from it means declining from weakness to weakness instead of progressing.

Each step upward prepares the way for further growth and greater blessing, bringing the contrite soul nearer to heaven through the grace of God as each lesson learned prepares for further instruction. This progress means continually seeking Christ's wisdom and righteousness rather than resting, pressing toward God's calling in lifelong striving, climbing, and seeking a fuller knowledge of God and Christ, never treating present growth as a reason for security or contentment. It is made by receiving correction, warning, and counsel as blessings from God, living in humility rather than making self the center of life, and it leads toward the perfection needed to enjoy heaven.

Those who follow Christ advance from light to greater light and grow in grace and the knowledge of Christ until made complete in Him. This comes through faith and obedience rather than seeking heaven by one's own righteousness, for His life inspires continued effort and His righteousness belongs to the believer. Spiritual growth comes through increasing faith and knowledge of God and His will as believers exercise their powers in spiritual things and understand the deep things of God's Word.

Every Christian must keep advancing in spiritual strength and use all ability and powers in Christ's service and God's cause. Had they done so, Satan's forces would have had less power to prevail against them. Deceptive thinking and unwise actions bring spiritual weakness and prevent continued progress from strength to strength.

Linking with selfish, unfaithful people can instead carry a person from weakness to weakness and from darkness to deeper darkness. Trust in God brings help, and love for God works out in love for others.

Christlikeness and Victory

The righteous go from strength to strength by becoming more like Christ, and those sanctified by the truth become self-controlled and follow His example. As they obey Him and walk in the light He gives, His light illuminates their way and His strength sustains them, so they advance from strength to strength and from grace to grace in growing likeness to Him. Through faith in Christ's righteousness and by the Holy Spirit's work the believer moves from grace to grace, from strength to strength, and from character to character, becoming like Christ and growing toward His full stature. Christ carries believers forward step by step and upward, from one degree of likeness to Him to another until they reach the full stature of His likeness.

The one united with Christ grows more victorious day by day, going from strength to strength rather than from weakness to weakness. The Christian life advances through successive victories from strength to strength, gaining a succession of victories in faith day by day. The call to go forward from strength to strength belongs to the life of faith, as those who journey toward God gain strength as they go and move from victory to victory. That advance goes from strength to strength, from character to character, and from victory to victory through prayer in faith. It is also a going from grace to grace through trials, as trust, prayer, and faith bring one spiritual victory after another in resisting temptation, bringing every thought into captivity to Christ, and holding fast to Him for strength while overcoming.

Progress toward Christian character comes through active service and intellectual and moral culture, as the heart is renewed and the affections and thoughts are changed, while the understanding and mental powers are not darkened or restrained but unfolded and developed. Receiving Christ's grace enables going from strength to strength, for constant prayer brings Christ into the life, and His grace gives strength to overcome sin and to meet conflicts and temptations in His spirit, preparing for eternal life. Continuing in the light God gives leads from strength to strength, while failure to surrender fully to God keeps a person from becoming an instrument of righteousness, so the one addressed as Bro. G is urged to seek meekness and Christ's righteousness in order to be hidden in the day of the Lord's anger. The just progress from strength to strength, and as they seek God's counsel and obey in faith, divine light increases to help them meet new responsibilities and trials and to become a blessing to others.

God's People Advancing Together

God's believing people advance together from strength to greater strength, growing in faith and in assurance and confidence in the truth and righteousness of His cause as He guides them toward triumphant fulfillment. This united advance carries forward the work of the third angel's message toward its fulfillment with increasing assurance and power. They advance by standing firmly on the principles of His Word and righteousness, trusting Him to strengthen them with strength He gives for each new experience as they move forward in their work. His call to go forward applies this progress to a work that grows stronger and broader because the Lord is their defense. This leading applies to the people who received the messages of the past as they journey toward His presence, growing from strength to strength and from grace to grace and from glory to glory.

The work of saving and restoring people and bringing them to salvation moves progressively from grace to grace and from strength to strength. Those who take part as His human agents are blessed and encouraged and gain a rich experience. The church goes from strength to strength only as it continues to fulfill its mission and its spiritual life grows stronger rather than weakens. When neglect and indifference persist, and when living faith and zeal and active concern for saving others are lost, it instead declines into weakness and formality. As His people come before Him they advance from strength to greater strength, and the church is to be helped upward and onward with people of every age made a strength and blessing through a living connection with God.

This advance means growing in strength and happiness in His service, becoming settled and rooted in His love, and being prepared to serve Him and enter His kingdom. Those who rely on God can advance from strength to strength even when feeling insufficient for the work given them, becoming capable servants as they seek His guidance and learn from Christ. They continually increase in spiritual strength as they walk in obedience to the promise, and those who cooperate with Him and exercise simple faith go forward from strength to greater strength as He establishes them in Christ. Trusting God enables a person to continue diligently and perseveringly in assigned work and service for others, receiving strength and grace for the work while time remains. His children are to go on from strength to strength and from grace to grace, trusting Him rather than worrying over what they cannot control or change, and this was given as assurance to Edson that he can continue to grow stronger and continue faithfully when he trusts God and faithfully does his best.

His imparted power and light enable continued growth in the tact and capability and wisdom needed to minister to the sick and to souls. Meekness and humility and sanctifying grace equip them to share truth, while those who serve progress from strength to strength and from grace to grace, growing firm in principle and gathering light to reflect on the path of others under His watchful care over their labor. Those who obey His Word devote themselves to duty with unfailing energy and rise from one degree of strength to another, becoming acceptable among those who love truth and righteousness.

Examples and Final Triumph

David advanced from strength to strength as he grew in knowledge and piety through contemplation of God, through reflection on his own life, and through the Spirit of the Lord upon him. His growing understanding of God's character deepened his gratitude and devotion, and that deeper devotion found expression in richer songs of praise.

God purposed that Solomon would advance in strength and glory and draw ever nearer to God's character. By that growth Solomon was to inspire Israel to fulfill its trust as keeper of divine truth. Solomon's life instead went in the opposite direction, downward from transgression to transgression and from weakness to weakness rather than advancing in character. Those who direct their minds toward heavenly things advance in spiritual light, knowledge, and strength, including young people and students who devote their minds to God. They become persevering workers who lead sinners to Christ and point the discouraged and unbelieving toward heaven, and when their work is finished they can be welcomed into their Lord's joy. They go forward by maintaining righteousness and relying on God's strength, growing stronger and more effective through His grace until the Lord comes in glory and gives final triumph to the faithful.
