The King and the Beloved in the Garden Courtby CBPepper

Song of Solomon 1:12

While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.

The verse belongs to an Oriental love poem written in the warm figurative language of the East.
It is to be read as a poetic picture or parable of Christ and His church, presenting His wonderful love and the church's answering love.
Experiences in Solomon's life may also serve as a type of Christ and His church.
The church's love portrayed in the picture can falter in faithfulness and constancy.

The verse itself is part of the church's speech addressed to Christ.
It shows that when the King is present, loving appreciation of Him gives off a fragrance like spikenard.
In Christian worship Christ is to have the first place, and the soul's love and gratitude offered to Him is a fragrance ascending to the Father, anticipating heaven.
