Couple Resting Under the Apple Tree With FoxesBibleWorld

Song of Solomon 2:4

He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.

He brought the beloved into a place of companionship and nourishment, with love spread over her as a banner, and this portrays the precious experience of sitting in personal fellowship with Christ. The banqueting house signifies welcome and the banner signifies love in the welcome Christ gives to the repentant, so that even a first, faltering step toward God is met by grace and love. God welcomes the sinner and brings him into His presence under the banner of His love, clothing him in salvation and righteousness and giving him a place among the holy angels, while heaven rejoices over his return.

Christ's love is a banner spread over the believer that brings peace, while His grace sustains and quickens soul, mind, and body. His people live under His banner of love when they are filled with meekness and tenderness, and then His love is real to them and recognized by them, and His fruit is sweet to their taste. When they set aside selfish interests and treat one another with meekness and tenderness, love is their banner and the fruit of their fellowship is sweet. By making heaven begin on earth they prepare for heaven above, and so bring a different spirit into their work.

Those who follow Christ are enlisted under His banner to serve Him faithfully and willingly in the conflict between good and evil, with every member, layperson and minister alike, bearing personal responsibility.
