Song of Solomon 3:4
It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me. It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.
The one whom the soul loves is Christ Himself, loved not in general only but with personal, longing attachment. Contemplating His glory opens the eyes to know Him as that beloved one, and once recognized He is held fast and not released. To find Him and to hold Him without letting go is joy, for He walks invisibly beside travelers on the steep road to eternal life and refreshes them with joy even in tribulation. His presence is joy itself, so that to lose Him would be unbearable.
The same finding and holding voices an eager longing to see Jesus, even wondering whether He will be seen when He comes. It is also the experience of being shut in with the Lord in prayer and sensing His sweet divine presence. That communion stirs earnest intercession for others and remains unforgettable in the memory.
