Song of Solomon 3:5

I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.

The book is a poetic parable picturing Christ and His church, written in the warm figurative language of the East. Its imagery would not have seemed objectionable at the time it was written, though it may seem so to modern readers. The verse makes the daughters of Jerusalem witnesses to a charge not to disturb or awaken the beloved until he is ready. In the book's picture of Christ's love for His church, the verse teaches that love should not be stirred before its proper time. The verse displays Christ's wonderful love and the church's answering love, which often lacks faithfulness and constancy.
