The Bride Leans on Her Belovedby emmanuel_higgins

Song of Solomon 8:7

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

Many waters and floods are overwhelming forces that would extinguish or drown love, yet they cannot destroy it. Offering all the substance of a house to buy love is useless and meets only utter contempt. God's love for sinners has the strength of death and was revealed in Christ's life and death, and Satan's attempts to extinguish it cannot undo that revelation.

Christ's love for Judas was unfailing and unquenchable, persisting through resistance, ingratitude, and approaching betrayal, strong as death. Though He knew from the beginning who did not believe and who would betray Him, He withheld no pleading of mercy or gift of love, and drew Judas into the inner circle of chosen and trusted disciples. Day after day while His own heart was heaviest He bore the pain of continual contact with that stubborn, suspicious, brooding spirit. He witnessed and labored to counteract continuous secret antagonism among the disciples, so that no possible saving influence would be lacking to that imperiled soul.

Christ's love for His disciples continued though they were slow to understand and often grieved Him, showing it cannot be extinguished by opposition or drowned by hardship. That enduring love is the pattern for Christian love, which is tested and grows through being tested. Yielding to the Holy Spirit produces an intense love that nothing can quench.
