Zechariah 8:10
For before these days there was no hire for man, nor any hire for beast; neither was there any peace to him that went out or came in because of the affliction: for I set all men every one against his neighbour. For before these days there was no hire for man, nor any hire for beast; neither was there any peace to him that went out or came in because of the affliction: for I set all men every one against his neighbour.
The verse looks back to the former days before the foundations of the temple were laid. Those days were marked by hardship and disorder, with no hire or wages for man or beast, no peace or safety for going out and coming in for travel and daily life, and affliction setting every person against his neighbor. God controls nature and can use drought to punish disobedience, causing both people and animals to suffer.
This former distress stands in contrast to the prosperity, blessing, and security promised to the remnant, when in obedience they would receive the land's fruits, vineyards, grain, and gardens as commanded through Zechariah, showing those former conditions would give way to blessing. The prophecy to which the verse belongs serves as a type of the spiritual restoration to be wrought for Israel before the end of time.
