The New Specialty of Biblical Theology

IN the last Pacific, Geo. F. Magoun, of Grinnell, Iowa, endeavors to stir up the Congregationalists of California in regard to their theological seminary in Oakland. In the course of his article he says:—
"Professorships of ecclesiastical history, of New Testament Greek, of elocution, of the relations of philosophy and science to religion—and no seminary is complete now without these, to say nothing of the new specialty of Biblical theology—cannot be added without new endowments."
That "new specialty of Biblical theology" is what we are interested in. We have for a long time noticed something wrong about the popular theology, but we expect to see a great improvement, now that the Bible is to be studied in theological seminaries. We believe the new specialty has not yet been adopted in any of the theological schools on this coast.

The Decline in Camp-Meetings

ANIMADVERTING upon an article in the New York Sun under the caption of "The Decline in Camp-Meetings," the Oakland Times concludes by saying: "The fact though remains that the old-fashioned camp-meeting days are about over, and this fact finds proof in this State." The Times is partly right and partly wrong. While camp-meetings have declined with some churches, there is one denomination of professed Christians in this State who have held annual camp-meetings for the last twelve or fifteen years, whose meetings grow in importance with each succeeding year. We refer to the Seventh-day Adventists. Last year they held their camp-meeting and annual business conference in Oakland when they had more than 200 canvas tents pitched, and more than 600 campers remained on the ground for ten days. Frequently the immense preaching tent contained 1,500 to 2,000 people. September 17-29 they hold another at Stockton which will doubtless be still more largely attended.—Woodland Democrat.
