TO PATRONS OF THE “SIGNS OF THE TIMES.”

It appears that some do not understand why it is necessary that the renewal of their subscription should reach us before the date of expiration as shown on the address label of the paper. Let us explain—

The Reason Why.

Some of our patrons live a long way off, others live where mail reaches them very slowly, and in order that all may receive the paper while it is fresh, we must get it into the mail at least ten days before its date. In order to do this we must make up our mailing list, which means taking out of it all subscriptions that have expired, and give our order to the pressman to print the paper about two weeks before its date. In this order provision is made only for those names on the list. When renewals reach us late, it sometimes happens that we do not have papers to supply the demand for back numbers, and the parties are disappointed.
This paper, dated May 1, was completed in the type room and sent to the electrotype foundry on Wednesday, April 17. It was made ready and some copies were printed on Friday, and on Sunday, April 21, the printing was completed, and the paper was mailed.
We make this explanation for the information of our friends, and that they may appreciate more fully the reason why renewals should be sent in early.
This man knows and appreciates the SIGNS: “I send to have my paper another year. I have taken it from the time I accepted the Sabbath, about twenty years ago, and it grows better every year.” N. C. Nye, Stow, Mass.
The manager of a reform school for girls said: “One hundred and forty-two girls have made a solemn vow to lead a Christian life, and it was mostly thru the influence of the SIGNS.”

“HYPNOTISM OR MAGNETIC HEALING.”

A SUBSCRIBER in Missouri takes exception to what we have had to say in this paper in regard to “hypnotism or magnetic healing.” She thinks that we do not understand what we are talking about, else we would not write as we do. She thinks that if we would only “investigate” for ourselves so as to know the real truth about magnetism and hypnotism, we would find great good in them.
It is just because we have investigated them that we speak as we do about them. We have investigated them from the standpoint of the eternal principles of truth that God has placed in His Word, and therefore we know that we have conclusions that are absolutely correct. We know that our conclusions will be controverted, but that will not change the facts. We are in the time when God has warned us to be on the lookout for delusions that will be so cunningly prepared that the very wisest of men will be in danger of being led off by them. And in such times as these we must know the ground we are standing on. It will not do to speculate or to hang on uncertainties. We must have the positive knowledge of truth. We speak what we positively know when we say that the individual who places himself under the spell of the hypnotist or the so-called “magnetic healer” has turned his feet in the direction of the precipice; and unless he is arrested in his course, he will soon take the fatal plunge. The reasons by which we know this have been presented from time to time in this paper, and we will continue to do so as the Lord gives us grace and strength. T.

Pray for the General Conference

Pastor I. H. Evans, the President of our Foreign Mission Board, requests that our people everywhere unite in praying that the General Conference now in session may be made “the greatest missionary conference ever held.” This is certainly a worthy subject for prayer.

God’s Promise of Forgiveness

“As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us.” This is God’s promise for every one. How immeasurable is its consolation! Have you come to God so that it can be said of you He “hath” removed your transgressions from you? It is your privilege to experience the constant joy of this living promise of Jehovah.

Catholics in China.

Thirty years ago, before Protestant missions in China were of sufficient importance to the Chinese Government to be particularly noticed, when no such troubles menaced China or the nations as those thru which they are passing, the Chinese Government, thru Wen-Hsiang, said to be “the most liberal, fair, and open-minded minister that has ever been in the Foreign Board,” prepared friendly circulars to the French Government, in which they pointed out decided Roman Catholic aggressions inimical to the safety of the state. The Chinese believe that the Catholic Church has a political object in view. Here are some facts that look like it. The bishops “adopt the rank of a Chinese governor, and wear a button on their cap indicative of that fact, traveling in a chair with a number of bearers appropriate to that rank, with outriders and attendants on foot, an umbrella of honor borne in front, and a cannon discharged upon their arrival and departure.” The circular objects to the use of official seals as a mark of rank, and cites instances of their use, showing that these aggressions were “part of the settled policy of the church.” All these things are naturally repellant to Chinese pride, as Mr. Arthur H. Smith, in a very fair article in the Outlook of March 16, points out. This constant aggressive policy of the Catholic Church, the continual annoyance of local magistrates, has been a seed-sowing which is now bearing its fruit of Chinese hatred of foreigners. Would that both Roman Catholics and Chinese could see that these things are not of Christ. There is no politics, no striving after worldly honors, in true Christianity.

ASSOCIATING FOR NAUGHT.

These are days of associations and organizations for all sorts of purposes. Some of these associations, confederacies, and organizations are good, and consequently are doing a good work. But some of them are not good, and their work can be only evil. The Lord has said something on the question of organizations and confederacies that should be carefully studied. His words are:—
“Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces. Take counsel together, and it shall come to naught; speak the word, and it shall not stand; for God is with us. For the Lord spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying, Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid. Sanctify the Lord of hosts Himself; and let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread.” Isa. 8:9-13.
The foregoing words of Scripture show that certain people shall be calling for a “confederacy,” but the Lord says that we shall not join in it. The confederacies here spoken against are not based on right principles. They are organized for selfish, ambitious purposes, and they will not prosper.
None of these confederacies will stand, because the Lord has decreed that every evil thing shall go down. Then in these times when the nations are seeking to confederate for the purpose of overthrowing each other, when capital is confederating and combining to hold all the wealth of the world, regardless of the suffering it shall entail upon others; when labor is combining to fight capital; when confederacies and organizations are being formed to overthrow governments, etc., etc., those who desire to stand will need to know that they are established on correct principles, and the only place where we can go for absolutely correct principles, and know for sure that we are right, is to the Word of God itself.
At first thought you may not see the importance of this matter, and may think that this, and that, and the other, organization to which you belong is all right. But do not make a mistake. The Lord has given us this warning in His Word, and He does not sound the alarm unless there is danger ahead. No matter what your views of the subject may have been, be entreated by the Word of God. It is the only guide that can be trusted in these stormy times.

Are You Ready for the Coming of the Lord?

“Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.” John 14:1-4. Such is the gracious promise of the Master. And every one of the prophecies, without a dissenting note, tells us that the time is right at hand for this promise to be fulfilled. Are you ready for the coming of the Lord? The day is at hand.

The Light of God's Truth

“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.” God's light is shining to-day stronger than it ever shone. We have all the light of all the past centering upon this age. We have the great lives of the righteous men and women of the past before us; we have the precepts and promises of God in their fulness; we have all the fulfilled and fulfilling prophecies to feast the mind and give us light. Under these circumstances if we are in the dark it is our own fault. God has provided the light; and if we refuse to walk out into it, we should blame no one but ourselves for the gloom that surrounds us. The beautiful light of the perfect knowledge that Jesus is about to return to earth in person is for every soul in this time. Have you studied the prophecies so as to behold that light and know this cheering truth for yourself? If not, you little dream of what you are losing. Turn to a study of the Book of God, and let it give you the light and joy of the eternal ages that are before the good and the true. If you say that you are not of the true and the good, then turn to the Book anyway, and let it show you that the Lord has made provision for changing your whole course of sin into a life of purity and holiness. There is perfect joy in the light of God's truth. It can be found nowhere else.

Look Away from the Gloom

“And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.” Isa. 8:22. Where are you looking to-day? Are your eyes on this earth? If so, you are of those that “behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish.” The affairs of this world are developing into a fearful state of ferment and trouble that forebodes disaster. And this word says that those who shall continue to look to the world “shall be driven to darkness.” You say this is a gloomy picture; and no one will question your decision. And it is because of the gloominess that is pervading this world that we write about these things so as to attract your attention to the brightness, and the joy, and the rest, and the complete comfort that the Lord has for every one who will look away from the gloominess of these times to the reward that He has for us. The chiefest joy of all the ages is about to be realized by every one who will receive it. The Lord Jesus Christ is coming to this earth again in person, and the event is right at hand. Do you know about it? The invitations to “the marriage supper of the Lamb” have been issued. One has been sent to you personally. Have you opened your hand and heart to receive it. Receive the invitation, and with it the joys and the power of an endless life, and thus be filled with the joy of the Lord instead of the gloom that is settling over this world.

Sentimental Legislation.

Congressman Wheeler, of Kentucky, recently made a good point when he said that he did not believe that passing agitation should govern legislation. If this sentiment were more general, there would be less hasty and ill-advised legislation. Enacting into law everything that suddenly strikes a portion of the public as good sentiment very often begets regret. The codifying of mere sentimentality is dangerous legislation, and is sure to work unnecessary hardship on some who do not share the sentiment. Such laws always work injustice in some way, and a law that does injustice to even one individual is an unjust law. All religious legislation by secular bodies is of this character. Even tho a majority entertain a sentiment, that is no reason that all should be compelled to practically concede that the sentiment is right. It was to satisfy a “passing agitation” that Congress enacted a law for the compulsory closing of the Chicago Exposition on Sundays. Congressmen admitted that they did not dare to refuse a recognition of the agitation, lest they might fail of re-election. So they voted against their sense of right. Yet the courts did not uphold the law. Congress, however, has repeated its action of 1892. In appropriating $250,000 for a government exhibit at the Charleston Exposition next December, and $5,000,000 for the St. Louis Exposition in 1903, the bill includes a provision that both of the fairs shall be closed on Sunday.
