LESSON 11.—SEPTEMBER 13.—THE SECRET OF CONTINUANCE.

NOTES.

There is only one subject for the servant of the Lord to present to the people (Eph. 6: 19), and only one purpose in presenting that subject (Ch. 3: 8, 9). This is the secret or mystery which was made known to Daniel in the night vision, that he might make it known in Babylon. It means the gift of the only-begotten Son to save men from perishing. John 3: 16, 17. It means the gift of eternal life in the gift of that Son. 1 John 5: 11, 12. This means the bringing into the mortal flesh the power to “stand forever,” and this is the secret of the everlasting continuance of the kingdom of God. This everlasting continuance of the kingdom of God is assured by the everlasting continuance of Him in whom and through whom it is established. This will be clear from the consideration of a few scriptures. The first chapter of the Epistle to the Hebrews is devoted to setting forth the exalted character of the person of the Son. In developing this theme seven quotations are made from the Old Testament. One of these quotations is from Ps. 102: 25–27. One sentence of this passage in verse 26 reads as follows: “They shall perish, but thou shalt endure.” In the margin we have the word “stand” in place of the word “endure.” When this passage is quoted in the first chapter of Hebrews it is rendered, “They shall perish; but thou remainest.” In the Revised Version it is rendered, “They shall perish; but thou continuest.” Thus we have the words “endure,” “stand,” “remain,” and “continue,” to which may be added the word “abide,” all of which are used in our English Bible to express the idea of continuance. Everlasting continuance is a fundamental element in the revelation which God has made to us of His being. His very name, “I am,” signifies it. He proposed to share this everlasting continuance (eternal life) with man by sharing His own character (glory) with him (Ps. 8: 5), but man lost this character (glory) through sin (Rom. 3: 23). The Gospel of the kingdom is “the Gospel of the glory of the blessed God” (1 Tim. 1: 11, R. V.), restored to man in and through the gift of the Son of God to the human family (John 17: 22). The only-begotten Son ranked with the Father in the eternity of His being. John 5: 26; 8: 35, last clause. Although the Jews entertained many erroneous views concerning Christ, the Messiah, and His mission to the earth, yet they saw clearly this teaching of the Scripture concerning His everlasting continuance. John 12: 34. In giving His Son to the human family, and sending Him here to establish His kingdom in the earth, God made the provision for the everlasting continuance of that kingdom by providing everlasting continuance (eternal life) for all who would receive the gift of His Son (John 1: 11, 12) and share with Him in His righteous character. This is the mystery of the kingdom of God. This is the secret of the everlasting continuance of that fifth kingdom, of which it was said, “It shall stand forever.” Dan. 2: 44.

Results of the Higher Criticism.

D. S. Margoliouth, M.A., professor of Arabic in Oxford University, England, himself a higher critic, in writing on the “Higher Criticism” in the Chicago Record-Herald, remarks: “It is evident that all the hypotheses which it has produced have either broken down or been lost in a maze of hypotheses which are necessary to support the first, and that in the course of the procedure each place that seemed to offer firm ground has given way.” And that is candid and true. The learned professor tells us that we know “in consequence of the researches of the higher critics,” “very little, if anything,” “more about the structure and dates of the books of the Old Testament than was known in the eighteenth century, or to the medieval rabbis.” And he further tells us that the various schools are contradictory, one utterly rejecting the conclusions of another, and thus concludes: “We can scarcely feel sure that the opinions which are now dominant may not be similarly ousted, tho it may be difficult to predict the character of those that will be substituted for them.” The frank child of faith has nothing to fear. He has put to the proof Christ’s test, and has not found it wanting. John 7:17.

“Circumstantial Evidence.”

—A correspondent of the Sunday School Times, whose letter is printed in that paper of August 9, inquires about the change of the Sabbath from the seventh to the first day of the week, and says:—
In our studies we found that every commandment, with the exception of the fourth, was reaffirmed in the New Testament. Consequently, the observation of the first or Lord’s day rests wholly upon circumstantial evidence. Is not the position of the church somewhat weakened by this fact? I have always looked upon the moral teaching of the fourth commandment as binding upon Christians, and do yet.
And the only circumstantial evidence there is, is this, that the church finds herself keeping the first day. Jesus did not keep it. The apostles did not keep it. There is no command whatsoever concerning it. On the other hand, the perpetuity of the whole law is affirmed again and yet again, in every jot and tittle. Matt. 5: 17; Luke 16: 17; Isa. 51: 5, 6; James 2: 8–10. The correspondent, in closing, well asks, “Are we in any sense released from the command, ‘Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy?’”
In his reply to this and a kindred query, the editor frankly declares that “there was no fixed and formal legal change in the observance of the Sabbath at any one time in the early church;” and that “for a time both days were kept by many Christians.” And this is true, but Sunday never as a Sabbath in the early church. Twelve centuries pass before Sunday is ever called the Sabbath by the church. The church is weakened and ever will be weakened till she return to the Word of God, the law which God gave through Christ, and which Christ as our example kept.

Appeal for Mexico

Read in our Missions department (page 13), the “Appeal for Mexico,” and respond.

All Fulness in Christ

In Jesus Christ all fulness dwells for our emptiness. He came to this world to give us of that fulness; He died to give us of that fulness; He lives to give us of that fulness; and He will give it to every soul who yields to Him. “For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily, and in Him ye are made full.” Then turn from the empty cisterns of this world to the free full Fountain.

Using Our Talents

It is not so much the great number of words you know, but how you use them. A vest-pocket dictionary may contain 50,000; but some of the great masters of literature used only one-fourth that number. You may possess many God-given talents; but possession alone will not avail. How are you using them. One talent used unselfishly for God is worth a dozen buried in the earth or manifested only in words.

Candid Admission.

The Christian Work and Evangelist (Independent Presbyterian) of August 16 has the following editorial note:—
The Rev. Joseph D. Smith, writing in the Presbyterian Journal, says that “God modified the law of the Sabbath, changing it from the seventh to the first day of the week.” It would be a better expression to say: No authority can be cited in the New Testament for the specific change from Saturday to Sunday, which was effected by the Apostolic Church in the first century.
The last statement is on purely Roman Catholic ground—tradition. There is absolutely no evidence in “the Bible and the Bible alone,” and the simple fact is that the apostles never had aught to do with such change.

CHRIST AND MOSES.

CHRIST was a prophet like unto Moses. Acts 3:22, 23. There was no contrast of teaching or purpose between them. John 5:45-47. Christ was a greater light than Moses, and manifested more clearly the mystery of godliness than did Moses. His ministration is more glorious, but in no sense antagonistic. “The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth by Jesus Christ.” John 1:17. This scripture does not imply that grace and truth superseded the law; for the psalmist says of Christ, “Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Thy law is the truth.” Ps. 119:142. “The law was given by [the hand of] Moses,” but Christ magnified the law, and made it honorable. Isa. 42:21. The principles of the law were manifested in His life of perfect obedience. He simply carried on the work which Moses imperfectly represented in type. Christ did not annul the work of Moses. Grace and truth were but the essence of Christ’s mission to earth, the manifestation of the law which was in His heart. Ps. 40:8. “If thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matt. 19:17) is not offset by Paul’s statement that “By grace are ye saved, through faith.” Eph. 2:8. Both ideas are included in the plan of salvation. Eternal life comes by, through faith in, “every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God,” whether it come by Moses or by Christ. The Gospel is one message from Genesis to Revelation.

A Combination

A Combination.—When Dr. Henry M. Field became too old to edit the Evangelist, an independent Presbyterian paper, the ownership and editorship passed to his chief assistant, a lady, Mrs. Houghton. The Evangelist is now merged with Christian Work, another independent (Presbyterian) paper owned and edited by Dr. J. N. Hallock, and now called the Christian Work and Evangelist, with Dr. Hallock, Major Bright, and Mrs. Houghton as editors. It is not to be wondered at that Mrs. Houghton, able as she is, could not conduct successfully a Presbyterian paper, seeing that the lady herself is a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It seems to us that there is too much of an inconsistency to make the paper either a religious or denominational success.

Who Can Tell What a Day May Bring Forth?—

Day before yesterday, as it were, we were gravely told by Science that the interior of the earth was a molten mass of melted rock and other earthly elements, of which volcanoes were vent-holes to relieve the enormous pressure. Yesterday Science assured us that the old view of the day before was wrong, and that the interior of the earth, tho intensely hot, is densely solid on account of the tremendous pressure; and if this were not so, if it were liquid as was formerly declared, the attraction of sun and moon is so great that it would wrinkle its crust as the wind does a tent-wall. To-day Mr. Garret P. Serviss informs us that French scientists, Messrs. Loewy and Puiseaux, have been studying the moon by means of photography; that the moon is an image of the earth in past ages; and that a study of the photographs of the volcanic regions of the moon shows that the day-before-yesterday view of the earth was correct after all. What next? Science seems to accommodate itself to almost everything save Bible truth.

Sabbath and Sunday

Sabbath and Sunday.—A writer in the Chicago Record-Herald of August 10 declares that the time has come when “some one should enter a protest against the indiscriminate use of the two words, ‘Sunday,’ and ‘Sabbath.’ The land is filled with preachers, editors, and writers who seem to have no clear conception that the words designate two distinct days, and should not be used interchangeably, for scriptural, legal, and sensible reasons.”
Then after speaking of the more correct use by lawyers, he concludes:—
Then let us all remember that it is neither scriptural, legal, nor sensible to write or speak of “the Sabbath” when we mean “Sunday,” or “the first day of the week,” or “Lord’s day.”
But this writer is just as badly off as those he criticises, for he makes the Lord’s day to be Sunday, when the uniform testimony of Scripture, inferential and positive, is that the Lord’s day is the Sabbath, and that Sunday, in any holy, scriptural guise whatsoever, is a usurper.

Conscription and the Ambition of War

A daily paper, in endeavoring to prove that the world is growing better, says: “Cæsar, Alexander, Napoleon, and others like them, had great ambition. To gratify their ambition they forced hundreds of thousands, millions, of men to march and fight and die for them. . . . The Napoleon of to-day must get a Congress to give him his soldiers.” But when this is done, as witness the millions of Europe, and all the people become partakers of the unholy ambition of wars of conquest and glory, any one can see that the number of criminals becomes greatly increased. And now in the freest governments of earth, conscription in military service has been freely advised. Sometimes men are “only strong for lack of test.” There is about where the world stands.

The Spirit of War and of Blood-thirstiness.

The prophets of peace will look in vain for swords to be beaten into plowshares and spears into pruning-hooks when men in such high positions of power and influence as the President of the United States give such advice to young men as the President gave recently to the cadets at West Point: “A good soldier must not only be willing to fight, he must be anxious to fight; I do not want anything to do with him, if he is not.” That is the spirit of the age. It is personified in our “strenuous” President and in Germany’s war lord, Emperor Wilhelm. While no Christian could feel that these were men for the hour, they are men of the hour; they are products of this age. But they do not make for peace.
