The Calhoun Trial.

After a long trial including weeks, and even months, the jury in the Calhoun bribery case of San Francisco failed to agree on a verdict, and so were discharged June 20. It is now five months or over since Mr. Calhoun, president of the United Railroads, made his first appearance in court to answer to the charge of offering a bribe of $4,000 to a supervisor to obtain a privilege for his corporation. Mr. Heney proposes to make another attempt for conviction. The jurors who voted not guilty, give, as their reason for doing so, the alleged fact that they had no confidence in the testimony of the supervisors, detectives, and some others of the paid witnesses of the prosecution.

South African Union Accomplished

South African Union is an accomplished fact. The legislatures of the Transvaal, Cape Colony, and Orange River Colony promptly confirmed the constitution in its amended form as adopted at the Bloemfontein Convention, and in Natal, where the greatest opposition was manifested and the question had to be referred to the referendum, the constitution has been adopted by popular vote of 11,121 to 3,701. The four colonies will therefore form a single nation with a strongly centralized government. The constitution will now be brought before the English Parliament for ratification.
