“Take My Yoke”

ANY one familiar with Europe knows that the peasants and the peddlers carry their burden on a yoke — a piece of wood hollowed to fit around the neck and rest on the shoulders, a rope at each end, ending in a hook — and in this way the burden bearer can carry two loads, either of which would be impossible to carry by hand.
Even the ancient Egyptians knew this yoke; and among the pictures in the back of most Bibles is shown a scene of Egyptians carrying brick by means of a yoke.
The words from Matthew, “Take My yoke upon you,” evidently refer to that kind of yoke; for if the yoke used for oxen were meant, the Master would have said, Come into the yoke with Me, and not, Take it on you. As the heaviest burden is the burden of sin, and as the Master had our iniquity laid upon Him, He offers to us, in exchange, His yoke, which is easy, and in the same text tells us how to carry it — namely, meekly and lowly.

The Secret of Victory

IN the manner in which Jesus met and triumphed in every conflict with Satan, He gave to man the secret of victory. “It is written” was His successful weapon; and it may be ours.
It was not a matter of choice with Jesus as to how He would meet and conquer every temptation. That is, it was not a question of selection of one among many methods equally good and effective. No; there was only one effective weapon that even He, the Son of God, could use; and that was the word of the living God, the promises of God, the “exceeding great and precious promises,” containing in themselves the divine nature, the very life and power of God. This was the only weapon by which even Jesus could conquer sin and Satan; and it is absolutely our only weapon. All others, without this, must fail.
“Christ Himself could not resist temptation but by the Word. ‘It is written’ was His weapon for every attack. You will have to study that Word before you can know what is written.”
The Spirit of God brings to our memory what we have read and studied of that which is written. The more the Word is studied, the more securely is the soul garrisoned against the attacks of the enemy.
The word of God is also an antidote for sin. No man can continuously, daily, read the word of God, and keep on sinning. He will cease to read the Word if he decides to continue in sin; and he will cease to sin if he decides to read the Word constantly. The word of God creates an aversion for sin, a hatred for it, for evil in every form. When praying for “a clean heart,” let us remember the words of Jesus, “Ye are clean through the word which I have spoken to you.”
Our only hope is to “let the word of Christ dwell in” us “richly in all wisdom.” “For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” 1 Thess. 2: 13.

Real Purpose of Christ’s Coming

Too often we associate the idea of wrath with the second coming of Christ. It was love that prompted the first advent of our Saviour; it will be love that prompts the second advent of our Saviour.
When God, by the hand of Moses, was leading the children of Israel through the wilderness, it was because of love that He opened before them a path through the Red Sea. We do not believe that God’s main object was to destroy Pharaoh and his army, but to deliver His chosen people. When Christ comes in the clouds of heaven, we do not believe that it is His express purpose to destroy the wicked, although they will be destroyed by His coming, but to deliver His faithful children. Some New and Beautiful Songs

BROTHER CHARLES P. WHITFORD, who has for many years been connected with the Adventist people as a singing evangelist, has recently published three beautiful songs, entitled, “The Paradise Home,” “A Light in the Window Up There,” and “When the Shades of Eve Are Falling.” The melody is excellent; and the words, aside from their musical association, are rich in spiritual thought, and inspiring in true sentiment.
We can most cordially recommend these songs to all lovers of good music, and bespeak for them a wide circulation, believing they will prove a help and blessing to all who may chance to hear them sung.
“The Paradise Home” and “A Light in the Window Up There” are companion songs. Price for the two, 25 cents; “When the Shades of Eve Are Falling,” price 25 cents. Address Charles P. Whitford, Orlando, Florida.

“Just Lovely”

SHORTLY after the close of a revival season in one of our large churches, a sister with whom I was well acquainted wrote me that her son had been converted, and among other things, she said, “He is just lovely!” This had the more weight with me, as the mother was not given to undue praise.
The expression puzzled me, for I had known the boy before, when he was far from being “just lovely.”
This was the way—the only way—I could solve the puzzle: there had come into his life so fully the One who is “the chiefest among ten thousand,” and “altogether lovely” (S. of S. 5: 10, 16), that the secret was out. It was all clear now. “Christ liveth in me.” Gal. 2: 20.
It is my sincere prayer that many another mother may have a similar experience with her son or daughter—that truly he or she is becoming “just lovely.” W. H. SAXBY.

Life Sketches of Ellen G. White

In the first 245 pages of this forthcoming book, Mrs. White gives a brief story of her childhood days, her conversion, and her early Christian life, and thrilling experiences in connection with the great second advent movement of 1840-1844. She tells, in a vivid way, the sorrows and joys of her youthful ministry in the years that followed the disappointment which came to those in the 1844 movement.
Following that is the narrative of her more extended travels and labors in connection with her husband, Elder James White, up to his death in 1881.
From that time, the relation of her life story is taken up by C. C. Crisler, who, with the assistance of W. C. White and D. E. Robinson, has completed the sketch, which includes an account of her last sickness, and the funeral services held in California and Michigan.
The book will contain about 500 pages, and will be ready in about two weeks.
