The Judgment

IN THE ancient tabernacle, when the gospel was preached to the people in type, the Ten-Commandment law was given on tables of stone, as the rule of righteousness. Violation of any of its precepts was sin, and required an offering to be made. (Leviticus 4:1-3.) On the day of atonement, the priest made atonement over the broken law of Ten Commandments, which were in the ark (Deuteronomy 10:1-5), and according to the standards of that law they were judged.
After reviewing the giving of the law, Moses said, “These words the Lord spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire: . . . and He added no more. And He wrote them in two tables of stone.” Deuteronomy 5:22. “The Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as He hath commanded us.” Deuteronomy 6:24, 25.

JUDGED BY RIGHTEOUS LAW

To-day, as then, transgression of the holy law of God is sin. “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” 1 John 3:4. “All unrighteousness is sin.” 1 John 5:17. The breaking of that law is sin; the keeping of it is righteousness. Paul says, “The law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good;” and adds later, “We know that the law is spiritual.” Romans 7:12, 14. The psalmist tells us, “The law of the Lord is perfect,” “the statutes of the Lord are right: . . . the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.” “Moreover by them is Thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.” Psalm 19:7, 8, 11.
By this righteous law man shall be judged. James 2:8-12 tells us, “If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well: but if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For He that said, Do not
commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.” Jesus said, “If any man hear My words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth Me, and receiveth not My words, hath One that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.” John 12:47, 48. Paul, the great apostle to the Gentiles, tells us, “God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.” Romans 2:16.
The law of God is a transcript of His character; for we read that it is perfect (Psalm 19:7); it is the truth (Psalm 119:142); and it is holy (Romans 7:12); and spiritual (Romans 7:14). It is a law of love. (Deuteronomy 6:4, 5; Leviticus 19:17, 18; Matthew 22:35-40.) This law is to last forever. There can be only one perfect standard of righteousness. It is stated in Psalm 111:7, 8: “The works of His hands are verity and judgment; all His commandments are sure. They stand fast forever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.” Jesus confirmed this statement when He said, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in nowise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” Matthew 5:17, 18. “It is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.” Luke 16:17.

STANDARDS ACCORDING TO LIGHT

In this law is summed up all of man's duty. “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:13, 14.
Man sets a standard for himself, which will also be considered in the judgment. This standard is according to the light he has, and very often that amount of light is best revealed by the judgment he passes on his fellow man; therefore we read from the
Sermon on the Mount, “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” Matthew 7:1, 2. Again it is said, “Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.” “And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?” Romans 2:1, 3. When Eli’s sons had sinned, God sent this message to him, “I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.” 1 Samuel 3:13. One more text dealing with this thought: “To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” James 4:17.
God is very merciful to those who sin ignorantly. Paul testifies to His wonderful love thus, “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.” 1 Timothy 1:12, 13.

GOD'S STANDARDS ARE HIGH

It is a solemn thought that every one must meet the high standard of God’s perfect and holy law at the judgment bar of God. We cannot but ask the question, “Who shall be able to stand?” Revelation 6:17. The word of God tells us, “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” “There is none righteous, no, not one.” “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.” Romans 3:23, 10, 19.
If man were left to appear in the judgment on his own merits, there would be one sentence for all, and it would be death. “All have sinned,” and “the wages of sin is death.” Romans 3:23; 6:23. But God again meets the need of humanity and provides a perfect substitute, One whose life was in perfect accord with the law of God, One “who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth.” 1 Peter 2:22. “What the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:3, 4. Jesus Christ lived a righteous life; when we accept Him, His righteousness is imputed, or turned to our account; and when our lives are placed in the balance in the judgment, the righteousness of Christ meets every demand of the law of God. In Christ we are accounted righteous. We read, from the Twentieth Century New Testament, “The judgment, which followed upon the one man’s sin, resulted in condemnation, but God’s gracious Gift, which followed upon many offenses, resulted in a decree of righteousness. For if, by reason of the offense of the one man, death reigned through that one man, far

The Judgment

(Continued from page 12)
more will those, upon whom God’s loving-kindness and His gift of righteousness are lavished, find life, and reign through the one Man, Jesus Christ. Briefly then, just as a single offense resulted for all mankind in condemnation, so, too, a single decree of righteousness resulted for all mankind in that declaration of righteousness which brings life.” Romans 5:16-18.

DO NOT DESPISE PROVISION MADE

This righteousness that Christ gained for you and me is ours if we will accept it. Christ lived the perfect life for us, as verily as He died for us. When we accept it by faith, then it can be said, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:1. Let us not despise this wonderful provision, as did Israel of old, of whom it is said, “They being
ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.” Romans 10:3. Only as we “submit” and accept this righteousness, shall we be able to stand in the time of judgment; and God has made every provision for us to stand complete in Christ Jesus.
In our next study we shall learn of the glorious consummation of the plan of redemption, in the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.

L. Ervin Wright
The story of how they turn a town upside down; and for the first time the town was right side up.

THE STORY THUS FAR

Mrs. Winters, her son, Dale, and daughter, Theresa, newcomers to Fairdale, start an active missionary campaign. They are the first Seventh-day Adventists ever to live in Fairdale. Dale holds several Bible studies in the home of Mrs. Helman. Theresa conceives the plan of starting a Sunday school. The club hall of the Chamber of Commerce is secured for the Sunday school and also where Dale can lecture. Pastor Dodson of the —— church begins an attack on the Adventists. He believes that all who do not keep Sunday as the Christian sabbath should be boycotted, and, as an extreme measure, all Sunday desecrators should be deemed guilty of treason,—which he asserts merits the death penalty. Dale Winters in his second Sunday night lecture explains the two-horned beast of Revelation 13:11 to be the symbol of the United States, with its civil and religious freedom.

The Mark of the Beast

When the prophet said that the two-horned power, or the United States, would eventually speak like a dragon, he must have meant that some decided change would come over this nation. But since the governing powers of our nation are derived from the people, the prophecy must mean that the people of the United States change their views on things.
“Now notice what this two-horned power does. Says the prophet, ‘He exerciseth all the authority of the first beast in his sight. And he maketh the earth and them that dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose death stroke was healed.’ Revelation 13:12, A. R. V.
“Since we are living in the very time when the death stroke to the papal phase of the first beast is rapidly healing, we are fast approaching the time when our government shall exercise all the authority of a church-state system, for that was exactly what the first beast was, and what it will be again when its deadly wound is healed.

DECEIVES WITH SIGNS

“In verses 14-17, A. R. V., the prophet states: ‘He deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by reason of the signs which it was given him to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast who hath the stroke of the sword and lived. And it was given unto him to give breath to it, even to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as should not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free and the bond, that there be given them a mark on their right hand, or upon their forehead; and that no man should be able to buy or to sell, save he that hath the mark, even the name of the beast or the number of his name.’
“One of the points that I should like to call your attention to in these verses is the fact that this power is a republic. That is evident from the fact that this beast wears no crown, but more evident from the fact that the governing powers reside with the people, for the people are appealed to that they should make an image of the first beast. An image of anything is a counterpart of this other object. Since the first beast was a union of church and state, an image of this beast in the United States would mean that a union of church and state will be perfected in our nation. The thing that will give breath, or life, to this image is an amendment to the Federal Constitution to that effect. After the people have voted for that sort of thing, they will find out that they have given the image of the beast life, or power, to speak and to carry into effect various religious laws.
“In such movements as the National Reform Association, which I mentioned last Sunday evening, the Lord’s Day Alliance, the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, the International Reform Bureau, and so on, we see at work the forces that would get the people to make an image of the beast by enacting certain pieces of religious legislation. The men in these organizations are doubtless sincere and well-meaning men, but they are connected with un-American and unchristian movements, for these movements would compel and force the consciences of other men.
“As to what the mark of the beast is, I think that we may gain some valuable information from what Moses says concerning another sign or mark. The ancient Hebrew Passover, as you all know, was a yearly feast, or one of the Hebrew yearly sabbaths. God said to Moses about the Passover, ‘It shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes.’ Exodus 13:9. Now in what respect could the Passover be a sign upon the hand and upon the forehead? The forehead is but a figure for the seat of thought, the mind. The true observance of the Passover by the ancient Hebrew from the conscience and personal convictions constituted the worship of the true God from the mind. Thus the Passover could be said to be a sign upon the forehead. The symbol of the hand has long been deemed a figure of work, for it is with our hands that we do or direct our manual labors. Since the Passover requirement was that the Hebrew should cease from manual labor as he also did on the weekly Sabbath, by the cessation of labor by the hands on the Passover day, the ancient Hebrew could be said to have received a sign on his hand.

IS CONCERNED WITH A REST DAY

“It is thus apparent in the light of these remarks that the mark of the beast must concern a rest day of some sort. It cannot mean the seventh-day Sabbath, for that is God’s mark, or sign. According to such texts as Ezekiel 20:20 and Exodus 31:13, the seventh-day Sabbath is God’s sign between Him and His people.
“There is, however, another rest day not acknowledged in the Bible as belonging to God or to Christ, which man would have us accept in the place of the Sabbath of the Bible.
“From the Catholic Press of Sydney, Australia, August 25, 1900, I read: ‘Sunday is a Catholic institution, and its claims to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles. . . . From beginning to end of Scripture there is not a single passage that warrants the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first.’
“From the Catholic work, ‘An Abridgment of the Christian Doctrine,’ by the Rev. Henry Tuberville, D. D., page 58, I read:
“‘Ques.—How prove you that the church hath power to command feasts and holy days?
“‘Ans.—By the very act of changing the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow of; and therefore they fondly contradict themselves, by keeping Sunday strictly, and breaking most other feasts commanded by the same church.’”
“Replying to an inquiry as to whether the Catholic Church claims to have changed the Sabbath, Mr. H. F. Thomas, chancellor to the late Cardinal Gibbons of Baltimore, in a letter written in November, 1895, said: ‘Of course the Catholic Church claims that the change was her act, . . . and the act is a mark of her ecclesiastical authority in religious things.’

GOOD SUNDAY LAWS DESIRED

“From the ranks of the Sunday law advocates come such sentiments as are expressed by the Rev. S. V. Leech, D. D., in the Homiletic Review of November, 1892: ‘Give us good Sunday laws, well enforced by men in local authority, and our churches will be full of worshipers, and our young men and women will be attracted to the divine services. A mighty combination of the churches of the United States could win from Congress, the State legislatures, and municipal councils all legislation essential to this splendid result.’
“The Rev. W. F. Ireland of Los Angeles, California, has stated: ‘We purpose to organize a Sunday Rest League and erect a guillotine in the United States, in view of which every politician will recognize the fact that he is destined to political beheadal if he does not give us the legislation we demand.’
“Thus we see that there are prominent men in the United States who are working to unite church and state and enforce the observance of the Catholic Sunday, the mark of apostasy.
“Many will be deceived and give assent to Sunday observance with their minds, thus receiving the mark in their foreheads; others, either because they are forced or are indifferent, give their consent by refraining from Sunday labor, thus receiving the mark in their hand.
“That the Sunday law advocates recognize the twofold aspect of Sunday is evident from the statement of the late Rev. W. F. Crafts, in Sunday Union Convention, Wichita, Kansas, September 20, 1889: ‘We, the Sabbath Union, W. C. T. U., all the churches, and the Y. M. C. A., are laboring with all our might to carry the religious sabbath with our right arm, and the civil sabbath with our left. Hundreds of thousands will receive it as a religious institution, and all the rest will receive it as a civil institution, and thus we will sweep in the whole nation.’
“Of course, there will be some who will not yield to this mark, but the Sunday law advocates have it all planned out how to bring these dissenters to time.
“The Rev. Bascom Robins, in a sermon preached in Burlington, Kansas, Sunday, January 31, 1904, stated: ‘In the Christian decalogue the first day was made the sabbath by divine appointment. But there is a class of people who will not keep the Christian sabbath unless they are forced to do so. But that can be easily done. We have twenty millions of men, besides women and children, in this country, who want this country to keep the Christian sabbath. If we would say we will not sell anything to them, we will not buy anything from them, we will not work for them, or hire them to work for us, the thing could be wiped out, and all the world would keep the Christian sabbath.’
“I ask you candidly if this does not sound like the seventeenth verse of Revelation 13, which reads: ‘That no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.’

A SIGNIFICANT PROPHECY

“The prophecy that the United States would make the earth and them that dwell therein to worship the first beast is very significant. The word translated ‘worship’ really means homage. Now the very highest form of homage, or worship, is obedience, as seen from 1 Samuel 15:22. In view of this, the following statement by Monsignor Segur, a Roman Catholic writer, in his book, ‘Plain Talk About the Protestantism of Today,’ page 213, is rather striking: ‘The observance of Sunday by the Protestants is an homage they pay, in spite of themselves, to the authority of the [Catholic] Church.’
“But how, you may ask, can the earth be said to render homage? You doubtless recall that the punishment for the sins of the ancient Hebrews at one time was seventy years’ captivity in Babylonia. During this time the land, or earth, of Palestine lay desolate, or idle. This was done, we read in 2 Chronicles 36:21, ‘to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfill threescore and ten years.’
“A Sunday law that prohibits Sunday labor in agricultural lines will surely make the earth itself pay homage to the beast. Thus we see how completely and exacting the beast will receive homage.”

GAINING TOO MUCH

Readers of the “Signs of the Times” who send questions regarding health, with two cents return postage, to Dr. Heald will receive prompt reply by mail. But, remember, he can not diagnose or treat disease by mail. Persons who are sick need an examination and the personal attention of a physician.
No questions will be answered direct through this column. The answers which appear here are selected from the doctor's correspondence.
Send questions, with a two-cent stamp, to Dr. G. H. Heald, 140 Eastern Avenue, Takoma Park, D. C.

GAINING TOO MUCH

“I am a girl 16, 5 feet 1 inch tall, and weigh 154 pounds. I am gaining weight. I think the trouble is that I get too much sleep. Please send a reducing slip.”
The average weight for your age and height is 111 pounds. For a young person it is well to weigh a little more than the average, say 120 to 125, but surely for you 154 pounds is too much.
I am not at all sure about your getting too much sleep, but it is quite possible that you get too much to eat. One cannot weigh too much unless he eats too much. You probably have a splendid appetite and do not realize you do eat more than you should. Perhaps that point will be the sorest trial for you, and that is perhaps the reason why you want to cut down on the sleep. I think, though, you will have to learn to curb your eating also.
You should eat less of the breads and butter and cereal foods of all kinds, taking perhaps not over a slice of bread at a meal and using little if any desserts of any kind. You should avoid all candies and sweets and never eat a bite between meals, and learn always to leave the table with a good appetite. Now this to you will seem very drastic; but if you will follow it, you will lose weight. I am inclosing some directions for you, also a list prepared by a sanitarium. Your diet should be quite largely fruits and vegetables; that is, the foods that do not have very much body-building material.

TOBACCO HABIT

“Please send treatment for tobacco habit for my husband.”
I am inclosing directions for treatment as requested. But remember that there is no self-acting cure for the tobacco habit or any other habit.
The victim of a habit must first have an honest purpose and determination to give up the habit and must expect that seasons of craving will come when he will be strongly tempted to go back to his old habit. There is not only the body craving, but the old craving to smoke in fellowship with other smokers.
For this reason it is important that one who desires to overcome the habit should avoid as much as possible his old tobacco-using associates, and especially avoid gatherings where nearly all are smoking. The loneliness of being “different” will have an almost compelling force on one who has once been under the tobacco habit.

ENEMAS

“I use an enema daily, but the water will hardly return. Please tell how to use an enema so as to be least injurious to the bowel.”
Avoid the enema habit if possible. If necessary, use some combination of mineral oil and agar to soften the stools and make them more bulky. Use enough of this to get results, and gradually reduce the dose until you have it about right. It may be that after a while you will be able to get along without any of this preparation.
Try drinking more water, and drink at least two glasses before breakfast, and follow this by body-bending movements. If the plain water does not give you a movement, add one-half teaspoonful of salt to each glass of water. I would also take two glasses of water before each other meal.

MORE MILK; MORE SLEEP

“I want to continue nursing baby. What can I take to increase my milk? What can I do to get more sleep?”
Drink more milk yourself. Milk is one of the best foods for the mother in order to make more milk for the baby.
Perhaps you can get into a neutral bath just before retiring, and then dry gently so as not to stir up a skin reaction. It will help you about sleeping.
If you wake up in the night after going to sleep, a glass of hot milk or a cracker or a piece of bread may give you more sleep, for it is possible that you have too much blood in your head, and drawing some of the blood away to your stomach may enable you to sleep.

HEART TROUBLE?

“I have constant pain over left chest, like a tight hand holding me. It is hard to take a deep breath. When lying on left side, there is a feeling as if the heart were dropping.”
You seem to have heart trouble, and certainly ought to be under good medical care. The first thing should be an examination to determine how badly your heart is damaged and how much physical work you can do. Possibly you should be on a complete rest in bed, and stay there for a certain length of time. The doctor who examines you should be able to tell you just how much rest you should take.

IRON WATER

“The doctor says I am anemic. My neighbor has iron water. Will that help me?”
What you need is not mineral iron but foods that contain iron; such foods as spinach, lettuce, and other green vegetables, and eggs, of course. It is doubtful whether there is much iron taken up by the body in mineral form.

Shall We Hear Moses?

A SCIENTIST has recently made the startling statement that somewhere in the ether that surrounds the world like a tangled skein are still circling the words of Moses and others of the ancients. He says that sometime experts will be able to pick these words from the air and reproduce them on the radio.
Personally speaking, this seems too highly imaginary, and we doubt if such a thing is possible. But then again, so many astounding discoveries and inventions have come to light in recent years that almost anything is believable. The very idea of the now-omnipresent radio would have been thought fantastic fifteen years ago.
We wonder what effect the actual voice of the ancients would have on this present irreverent and blasé generation. Would they accept the Mosaic record of creation should they hear Moses himself reading the majestic account of it as he wrote it in Genesis? What impression would the Decalogue make upon the present lawless age if they could hear it read as Moses proclaimed it as recorded in Deuteronomy 5?
And if we are made able to hear Moses, then we shall also hear the words of the Master when upon earth nineteen centuries ago. What effect would it have on the world to-day if the Sermon on the Mount was to be gathered from the ether, and the beatitudes should fall upon our ears as they did upon His hearers so long ago? Would the world, so busy with its business and its pleasures, pause to think of holy things if the voices around the table of the Last Supper were to drift in upon us to-day? Would the harsh and raucous cries of the rabble as they seized the Master in the garden chill the heart of us moderns? Would we stop to ponder the cost of our redemption should we actually hear the pounding of the sledges as He was nailed to the cross on Golgotha's stony crest? Would His infinite compassion melt our hearts if we should hear Him pray for His slayers? Would the soft weeping of the disciples and the women as they laid Him in Joseph's new tomb at eventide tell us of the strong bands of love He forged about His followers then, and in every age since? Would the sound of the stone as it was rolled away by angel hands and the cry of victory as He came forth triumphant over death and the grave witness to this age of the supernatural element in Christianity?
But at this juncture echo the words in our ears, "If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead." Luke 16:31.
All through the ages the words of Moses and the other prophets of old as well as of the apostles of New Testament times have been faithfully recorded for us in the word of God. Our generation neglects and rejects and sometimes even laughs them to scorn. How, then, can we expect that if the actual voices were to be reproduced to-day anything deeper and more lasting than mere wonderment would result.
Whether or not the technicians ever bring to pass anything so surpassingly wonderful as the reproduction of the voices of the holy men of old is, after all, an immaterial question. Is our world to-day taking heed to the counsel they gave us as everlastingly recorded in the enduring pages of Holy Writ? Are we guiding and molding our lives by the precepts of the Scriptures? Are the words of the Master as given us by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John the chart and compass of our lives? If not, then hearing His voice over your radio will not suffice to alter the course you have chosen. God has left Himself an abundance of witness in things we already have. If we have not tuned in on the things of heaven thus far, we might turn the dial to jazz rather than to Jesus even if His voice were made available to-day.
