NEWS AND NOTES

SINCE OUR LAST ISSUE.

FOREIGN.

—Alexander Dumas, the widely known French novelist, died on November 27.
—A foreign despatch says that 500 persons perished in a storm in Odessa, Russia, recently.
—It is reported that 13,000 men are on their way from Spain to reinforce General Campos in Cuba.
—By a powder explosion at Palma, on the island of Majorca, on November 25, fifty-one persons were killed, and nearly as many more were severely injured.
—As one result of the recent war in Madagascar, and the feeling of antagonism to foreigners which is aroused, a missionary and his family were murdered recently by a mob of 2,000 natives.
—Jabez Balfour, the man who swindled English depositors by the wholesale in the building and loan associations of London, posing during that time as a religiousist and public benefactor, has been sentenced to fourteen years’ penal servitude.
—In six years the war budgets of Europe have increased at the rate of twenty-three per cent. There are at present 4,000,000 men in standing armies, on which twice as much is spent as was spent twenty-five years ago. While the standing armies represent the above figure, the number that could be called into active service is over twenty million.
—The University of Chicago has chosen Rev. John Henry Barrows, the president of the World’s Fair Parliament of Religions, as the man to inaugurate the series of lectures on Christianity in Bombay and other leading cities of India, according to the plan of Mrs. Caroline Haskell, who made the university a gift for that purpose. The lectures will be given in 1896, and Mr. Barrows has tendered his resignation as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago.
—Affairs in Turkey remain unchanged for the better. It had been expected during the past week that firmans would be issued by the sultan granting the powers the right they have demanded of passing more vessels through the Dardanelles and Bosphorus. This was asked to insure a safer feeling among foreigners in the capital. But it seems the permission has not been forthcoming for fear such action would precipitate further internal commotion. It is stated that since the massacres began, 40,000 persons, mostly Armenians, have lost their lives, and $50,000,000 worth of property has been destroyed.

DOMESTIC.

—A Hoboken, N. Y., German minister, by the name of Feicke, has applied for a license to conduct a saloon, resigning his pastorate for this business. His reason is that he can make more money out of the saloon.
—A notice has been posted by the dean of the Boston University giving students who insist on smoking in the building the privilege of withdrawing from the university. Probably the pipes will go rather than the students.
—A great manufacturing company in Massachusetts recently paid their workmen, on Saturday evening, 700 ten-dollar bills, each bill being marked. By the following Tuesday, 410 of these marked bills—$4,100—were deposited in the bank by the saloon keepers of the town.
—A freight train and an east-bound flyer came into collision on the Santa Fe road at Shoemaker, N. M., on November 25, resulting in the death of four persons, and the injuring of twelve others. The freight was trying to reach a point beyond the place appointed to meet the passenger.
—The heavy storm which struck Chicago on November 26 is said to have caused damage to the city wires to the extent of $10,000, while telephone companies lost $50,000. For a time communication was established with New York via Kansas City, the Needles, San Francisco, Vancouver, and Montreal, the direct wires being broken.
—Three of New York’s police commissioners were the guests of the Methodist Social Union of that city recently, and made speeches concerning the work that has been done and that is proposed concerning the enforcement of excise and Sunday laws. The union heartily endorsed their work, and passed resolutions to that effect. One of the resolutions declares that every effort will be put forth “to maintain the sabbath in obedience to the command of God.” That is, the Sunday laws will be enforced according to men’s statute regulations. This is the real object of the Sunday saloon crusade, to enforce recognition of the Sunday as a day of rest.

The Law of God as Changed by the Papacy

Is the title of a large Chart just issued, which shows in a striking manner the blasphemous pretensions of the Papal power. The testimony of the Best Catholic Authorities is given, and shows, by quoting their own words, that Sunday is a child of the Catholic Church. These quotations, together with admissions from standard Catholic works, are arranged in parallel columns on either side of this Chart, while the center column contains the Ten Commandments as taught by the Catholic Church. The whole forms a collection of extracts of incalculable value for every Bible student.
The Charts are three by four feet in size, and are printed on heavy map cloth in bold type, easily read across the largest room.
Price, Post-paid, $1.00.

Sabbath School Lessons

The Sabbath school lessons for the first quarter of 1896 are on the great and important subject of “The Great Threefold Message of Rev. 14: 6-12.” This subject will be divided into thirteen lessons, as follows: (1) The Last Days, The Need of a Reformation; (2) The Everlasting Gospel.—What Is It? Its Power; (3) The Power, Object, Effect, and Duration of the Gospel; (4) The Fear, Glory, and Worship of God; (5) The Falling Away; (6) Babylon; (7) The Beast, What It Is; (8) The Protestant Reformation; (9) Babylon the Great; (10) An Image to the Beast; (11) The Image and Mark; (12) World-wide Apostasy; (13) The Character and Triumph of God’s Remnant People.
These lessons will be published as heretofore in this paper, somewhat as Bible readings, with additional notes or accompanying articles. This feature alone will make the SIGNS of the next three months most valuable as a missionary paper.

Some Thanksgiving Utterances.—

According to reports of San Francisco papers we note the following from prominent religious teachers:—
“If the country continued as it was going now he was afraid the thickening sands of evil would bury it. The country had lived only 120 years, yet all the evils of which the prophets spoke were apparent.”—Rabbi Voorsanger.
True; a very definite prophecy of our country is found in Rev. 13:11–17.
“With our inheritance came hither, driven from Europe, God’s people, bringing God’s day, God’s church, and God’s book—the three pillars on which, as Professor Schaff said, our republic is built.”—Rev. C. O. Brown (Congregationalist).
“But to shout for liberty will not protect it, any more than in the days of the French Revolution, when Paris ran red with the blood of tyranny while men were shouting liberty. If we would protect liberty, we must love our American sabbath and protect that; for without it liberty can not live.”—Id.
“The American sabbath must be maintained against all foes, for the fourth commandment is one of the foundation stones of our government, and if that stone be removed, our nation must perish. Foreigners who come here to obey our laws, and not to violate them, are welcome, but to all others we recommend a speedy return to the land where the laws suit them better. This country belongs to God and not to Satan. Rum, Romanism and ignorance are not to rule us.”—W. R. Godwin, D.D. (Methodist Episcopal).
These are illustrative of others, showing that the Sabbath question is the great religio-political question. But it might be worth while in view of such statements as the above to ask several questions: (1) According to the plain English of God’s word what day of the week is God’s day? Read Ex. 20: 8-11; Mark 16: 1, 2. (2) How will protecting a religious institution protect men, especially the men who may be conscientiously and righteously opposed to it? The answer may be read in the history of the Dark Ages. (3) If men are privileged to interpret by church dogma and civil law the fourth commandment to mean the first day when it says expressly the seventh day, why may not other men interpret it to mean the sixth day or no day at all? (4) Does not every country belong to God as much as this? (5) And is all this gospel of force the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Finally, it is truly said, “To shout for liberty will not protect it,” and to call Sunday the Sabbath of the Lord or America Christian will not make them so. Putting error for truth and truth for error will not change the character of evil either; and a fabric built upon such a false foundation will fall. But that is just the foundation that is furnished us in this whole Sunday-sabbath law issue. Would to God that its promoters might see it.

National Reform Association Convention in Baltimore

The national convention of the National Reform Association will meet in Baltimore December 12 and 13. We shall endeavor to lay before our readers a report of its proceedings so far as they relate to matters of interest.

Catholic Priests Endorse Sunday Law Against Saloons

“The Roman Catholic Priests’ Eucharistic League at Washington indorsed the decree of the plenary council against Sabbath desecration by opening of saloons on Sunday.”—Voice. And why not? Should not Rome support her own?

Our Next Issue

Our Next Issue.—In our next issue we print, the Lord willing, what will be of great interest to many of our readers in respect to the “charter of our liberties,” the Declaration of Independence. In connection with this will be a cut of the press on which it was printed, and of the house in which the immortal document was written by Thomas Jefferson, together with facts of great interest and importance. It will make that issue of the Signs of THE TIMES valuable for both reference and circulation.

Reader Response to the Second Advent Symposium

THUS it is that one subscriber writes of our symposium number on the Second Advent: “I wish I were able to send a thousand copies of that blessed number to the people. Please excuse me for writing so laughably, but I could not refrain from expressing to you my appreciation of this blessed number. May God bless you more and more for your noble work.” And we are glad for these helpful words of encouragement, and for the prayers of this correspondent, as well as for the many others that ascend for us to the throne of grace.

Uncertainty and Unrest

Uncertainty and Unrest.—There is indecision and unrest everywhere. “Men’s hearts [are] failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth.” But in all these perils, trials, turmoils, in all this unrest, there is one sure refuge, one place of rest, one anchor that holds, and that is faith in Jesus Christ, resting on the word of the living God. He who trusts in Christ shall not be moved, ashamed, or confounded. “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.”

Fire Damages Atlanta Review and Herald Branch Office

JUST AS WE GO TO PRESS WE LEARN that the branch office of the Review and Herald (Seventh-day Adventist), at Atlanta, Ga., has been damaged by fire, in all probability the work of an incendiary. The building was somewhat injured, books were damaged to the extent of several hundred dollars, and a small printing plant was utterly destroyed. God in his goodness awakened those sleeping in the building in time to save their lives. It is but a little while ago that our church there was maliciously burned. It is thus that error has often opposed truth, but truth never adopts such methods.

THEY ARE FREE.

“All of the Adventist Cases Are Now Disposed of. The Court Makes Quick Work of These Drawn-Out Prosecutions.”
The above is the caption of an article in the Republican of Dayton, Tenn., concerning the persecutions of Seventh-day Adventists in that place. The editor says:—
“At last the Adventists of Rhea County can draw a deep breath of thankfulness, and thank God that they are free from the toils of the court. For the first time in twelve months this religious sect can enjoy the sweets of perfect religious and civil liberty. These people have gone through a fiery ordeal. They have, many of them, literally been imprisoned and made bondslaves to the state for opinion’s sake. But through it all they have maintained an evenness of faith and a serenity of temper that has challenged and won for them the admiration and respect of all classes of people. . . . Certainly a liberal sentiment has been awakened on behalf of religious freedom; and we hope and believe that never again will the Adventists of Rhea County be disturbed in their inalienable right to worship God according to the dictates of conscience. . . . Conscientious differences to attain heaven should not set men to fighting one another.”

Christianity Abides

The following, from an article by Rev. Dr. Mains, of Brooklyn, N. Y., gives utterance to a thought often expressed in these days:
“As America is lost or won for Christ, so for untold time to come will be decided the fate of Christianity in all the world.”
Now Christianity is of Christ. It receives from him its being, its life, its power. It is not dependent on its acceptation by any country, nation, people, or person. America as a nation will be lost, with all the other kingdoms of the world, as the “sure word of prophecy” declares, but this will not affect Christianity. The Jews rejected Christ, but God raised up others. So now the great professedly Christian world or nations may reject Christ; Christianity will still stand, and will still witness to all the nations of the world, not to convert all against their will, but “to take out of them a people for His name.” Acts 15:14.
