AN AGENT

By Editor

In ordering a supply of Outlook SIGNS to use in connection with her work for “Christ’s Object Lessons,” has this to say of this number: “Surely this is the best missionary paper ever published. I wish everybody could have a copy of it. But as wishing is not doing, I must order some to distribute.”

Wishing without doing is like faith without works,—dead. Who else will show the strength of their wishing by doing?

We still keep on hand a stock of Outlook SIGNS.

Christian Science and Spiritualism

There will be an article in the SIGNS of next week on “Christian Science,” “Spiritualism,” etc., and what they offer the believer in their theories.

The Girl as a Sister

By Editor

The excellent series of articles in our Home department by Mrs. M. C. Du Bois closes in this issue with “The Girl as a Sister.” The instruction has been good and needful, and we pray that it may do good in many homes.

The Bible and Scientific Infidelity

The only source of knowledge we have of Jesus Christ and the way of salvation is the Bible. That book has changed the face of the world. But how much is that knowledge worth which is gleaned from the Bible and strained thru the scientific infidelity of the day?

Erratum

By Editor

Erratum.—We regret the mistake made in the article entitled “God’s Thoroughness,” on page 4 of the SIGNS of last week. The mistake is in the eighth line from the beginning of the article. The word “same” should be “sun.” There is no sense as it appeared. The comparison is sensible as it should have appeared. The mistake is unaccountable, and only emphasizes human frailty. The mistake did not run thru our whole edition.

One Husband, One Wife.

Mal. 2:14, 15, in our Sabbath-school lesson, page 11, may present some difficulties to the student. Spurrell’s translation reads: “Still ye say: Wherefore? Because Jehovah is a witness between thee and between the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt unfaithfully, tho she is thy consociate, and the wife of thy covenant. Truly did He not make twain one flesh? and the Spirit, the consanguinity between them? And wherefore one? Because He desired a godly seed.” On verse 15 Boothroyd has this note: “Make one, etc. One man and one woman; ‘yet [or tho] He had the residue of the spirit,’ that is, all power and wisdom, and could have made more, had His intention been that one man should have many wives, or one woman many husbands. . . . That He might seek a godly seed. That parents might feel a proper interest in the education and welfare of their children, and especially mothers, which they could not when divorced at the caprice of their husbands.” God is still the same. He hates divorce.

The Coming Hot Time

The bright astronomical writer, Garret P. Serviss, tells us in Hearst's papers that it is still an unsolved problem whether the sun is getting hotter or colder; whether it is yet a gaseous body, or a liquid, or a solid. If it is still gaseous, he predicts there sometime “will be truly a hot time on the earth.” But there will be anyway; for so has the Word of God told us. 2 Peter 3. And thus men, the best of them, conjecture and guess, but God has spoken, and His Word can not fail.

The Standard Is the Word

The Standard Is the Word.—All else must be measured by that. If we will, we may in this life measure by it our motives and acts, and walk in its harmony. If we do this the Word will be in the last day a blessed witness to our fitness for the better life. If we refuse to so measure by it, if we reject the standard, that same Word will meet us in the judgment and condemn us for all eternity. God will not do this for revenge or as an arbitrary punishment, but because such condemnation is the operation of essential truth.

The Signs’ Original News Notes

By Editor

The original news notes of the SIGNS are evidently appreciated by some of our contemporaries. For instance, one Oakland paper, in its “items of interest, selected from various papers,” takes seven out of eleven of these items bodily from this paper. Some papers farther East frequently borrow largely, with no credit. Our readers ought to appreciate them at first hand. They are originally written in this office; the facts are carefully gleaned and sifted from the best sources at command during the writing. Sometimes we make mistakes, because our source of information is wrong, but never designedly. The SIGNS each week contains more important news of the world’s doings than many a provincial daily gives in a week.

It Is Not Christianity.

Some Kansas ministers have been very active in wrecking saloons. One of these recently had his church burned, and it is supposed that it was set on fire by saloon-keepers, or some of their friends. The pastor of the burned church now carries a gun when he walks the street, and is attended by an armed body-guard. He is reported to have said:—

“When the law-breakers undertake to ruin our churches because the decent people of this town seek to uphold our fair name, then it is time for us to act against them, and right rigidly. I say, let us lynch them. If the mob will run the men down who ruined my church, I will tie the noose which will swing them into eternity. I have been holding revival meetings here for the last three weeks, and have pleaded with some of the joint-keepers to close up their saloons, but they have insulted me openly. Now I am thirsting for revenge. When the church-wreckers get their just dues, it will be on the gallows.”

Now, all this is human, very human; but, reader, it is not Christian. The spirit of Christianity is to “love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven.” Matt. 5: 44, 45. Jesus prayed that His Father might forgive His persecutors. Luke 23: 34. Stephen prayed for those who stoned him to death, “Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.” Acts 7: 60. And the writer of Hebrews commends those who “took joyfully the spoiling” of their goods. Heb. 10: 34. Read 1 Peter 2: 19-24. When professed Christians can indorse such principles and methods as those said to be advocated by the Kansas pastor, they have departed a long, long way from the teaching and spirit of the Founder of Christianity. A revival held under such circumstances could not be a revival of the Christ spirit. It finds its prototype in the Dark Ages.

A Volcano on the Moon

Within three months one astronomer, M. Charbonneaux, declares that he and his assistants have seen an active volcano on the moon, with clouds of vapor floating above it. If this be true, what becomes of the theory of a dead moon with no atmosphere; for clouds will not float over an airless world? And the moon is our nearest neighbor. How little we really know! All observations of other worlds are based upon what we see and know here. And yet conditions there, where sin has not poisoned air and soil, may be vastly different. Many elements, or forms of elements, may exist there of which earth knows nothing.

Victoria

Victoria.—The late queen of England reigned longer than any other queen of history, longer than any other European sovereign except Louis XIV., longer by four years, three months, and twenty-six days than the longest reign of English monarchs, that of George III. “She outlived all the members of the House of Lords who were peers of the realm at the time of her accession, except Earl Nelson, and all the peers who were then or had been members of the House of Commons; she survived all the members of her original Privy Council and of her first House of Commons, Mr. Gladstone having been one of the oldest former members of the latter; she saw every Episcopal see vacated and refilled at least twice during her reign; she saw her judicial bench recruited twice at least from end to end; she lived to see five archbishops of Canterbury and six of York and five bishops of London, rule and pass away; she outlived eleven lord chancellors, ten prime ministers, and six speakers of the House of Commons.” She was empress of India for twenty-five years. She was a widow for forty years prior to her death. It was a remarkable reign in a remarkable age.

And This Is What We Might Expect.—

The following Associated Press despatch is from London, dated February 12:—

“A despatch from Madrid says that the pope has determined that the proceeds from the property of the friars in the Philippines, if the friars sell the property and leave those islands, will go into the treasury of St. Peter’s. His holiness permitted the friars to hold estates for the support of the missions, and if the missions are abandoned, the church will devote the money to the support of missions elsewhere. The Spanish ambassador to the Vatican, Señor Pidal, who was recently appointed to this post, had intimate relations with the pope, and will soon begin to discuss the questions affecting the interests of Spanish church orders.”

One paper heads the despatch, “Vatican Will Get the Money,” and this is doubtless true. The best lands of the Philippines, belonging to the Filipino people, as it now looks, will be given to the Papacy in some form.

Religious Liberty Tracts

Religious Liberty Tracts.—No. 13 of the Religious Liberty Library is entitled “Law and Its Enforcement.” It has sixteen pages; price, one cent. It discusses the nature of law, the law of nature, constitutions and bills of rights, duty to obey law, the bulwark of intolerance, persecution, and the necessity of eternal vigilance. It is a timely and important tract. No. 14 bears the title “Religious Liberty: What Is It? Why Is It? How Should It Be Used?” It answers these questions and is illustrated. Price, one and one-half cents. Address International Religious Liberty Association, 770 Monon Building, Chicago, Illinois.

St. Helena Sanitarium Prospectus

A gem of the printer's art is a prospectus of the St. Helena Sanitarium, which has come to our table. The cover is black green, with “St. Helena Sanitarium, St. Helena, Cal.,” in embossed gold type, with gold and light-green ornamentation. The letter-press is clear, clean, and beautiful, while the many half-tones of beautiful scenes, nooks, and corners in and about the sanitarium, are finely printed in tint, and more superb than the photographs themselves. The prospectus is full of information in regard to this growingly popular health resort and invalids' home and pilgrims' rest.

Two Poems of Beginnings

“The Biblical World” (University of Chicago Press, Chicago, Ill.) for February, beside other good things, contains the worth of its price in the article on “Two Poems of Beginnings,” by Prof. Edward B. Pollard. It is a comparison of the poem of Genesis with that of John 1. Aside from the more didactic parts of the article, the remarks of the professor on the nature of true poetry and its use in divine revelation, are strikingly beautiful. The magazine is $2.00 a year, 20 cents a copy.

The Value of the Atonement

Man of himself is a poor, lost being. He neither knows himself nor can he save himself. His greatest works crumble to decay, or are dimmed to obscurity by the greater glory of what follows. He is separated by sin from the great Source of life. His only hope is in the life at-one-ment thru Jesus Christ, revealed in the Bible. In that atonement centers Christianity. Now, of what worth is Christianity to that people or age who reject the atonement of that Word? What help is Christ to them?
