Does it pay to maintain 275 life-saving stations on our coasts at a cost of $1,500,000, and out of the same pockets maintain 25,000 life-destroying stations at a cost of $2,000,000,000 yearly?

The ravages of drink are greater than those of war, pestilence, and famine combined.
The Titanic carried down 1,503 persons. Phelps estimates that alcohol carries off directly and indirectly 65,897 adults annually. This means 1,503 men and women every eight days the year around.

Tithing in the Baptist Convention
IN the Baptist convention just convened at Los Angeles, California, Dr. J. W. Brougher proposed “tithing as a means of raising all the funds needed for the administration of religious activities.” Tithing is the Biblical method of supporting the gospel. The Seventh-day Adventist denomination has for many years taught and practiced this plan, and finds it both successful and highly satisfactory. And why should not a thing be both successful and satisfying that is devised by the divine Father Himself?
CALIFORNIA’S active volcano on the peak of Mount Lassen, which has contented itself with emitting smoke, after breaking out on June 1, 1914, has suddenly changed its program, and on May 22, 1915, it violently emitted a stream of mud that completely filled the little Hat Valley lying below it, spreading out over it to a depth of from three to six feet. A number of families resided in this valley; but so far as reported, there is no loss of human life.
THE University of California has just issued a very valuable circular on “Insecticide Formulas.” The circular tells how to prepare the various sprays and washes needed for destroying insect pests on fruit trees, in the garden, etc. Persons interested may receive copies of it by addressing the College of Agriculture at Berkeley, California.
THURSDAY, July 29, has been fixed as “Billy Sunday day” at the Panama Pacific Exposition. It is arranged that Mr. Sunday shall speak twice on that day.
Shrinkage Because of Communication
At a convention held at the Panama Pacific Exposition a few days ago, John R. Mott, of New York, said, “We are living now in the most dangerous age of the world, due to its shrinkage because of the greatly improved means of communication.” Dr. Mott also stated that “the world situation is rendered more complex than ever before in history because of the rising tides of racialism and nationalism that are manifesting themselves in all countries.” He contended that “the only thing that can make the world a safe place to live in is the spread of Christianity in its purest form.”
Few men seem to realize that the world is facing entirely new conditions. As Dr. Mott suggests, means of communication have made a great “shrinkage” in the world. It is now as though it were one neighborhood, and every part of our globe is touched and affected by every other part of it; and while this opens the way for good things to travel very rapidly, it also makes it possible for all evil contagions of mind and heart to spread everywhere as quickly as fast trains and steamboats and the time-annihilating telegraph can carry them.
The evils against which the world is contending in this time are very similar to the evils against which good men have combated in all the ages of the past, but we have them under these new conditions.
All good men will join Dr. Mott in saying that “the only thing that can make the world a safe place to live in is the spread of Christianity in its purest form.” But we must recognize that right here also lies one of the greatest dangers of the world. If you have in reality “Christianity in its purest form,” it will always uplift and help. But perverted Christianity, debased into a state religion, and enforced by civil law, becomes in itself one of the most degenerating forces. And a church and state program that will give us the worst religious despotism the world has ever seen is the thing that is now confronting us. There are many evidences in the world to show this, but the strongest evidence is the prophecy of the Bible which tells us what is coming.
The “improved means of communication” in the world have opened the way for a universal religious tyranny, and movements in this time gather strength and go with an intensity that is often furious in its rapidity. In order to combat the barbarous spirit of war in the world — to mention only one of its crying evils — the temptation is becoming stronger and stronger to revert to a church and state policy as the only means of meeting the issues before us. But instead of helping the world, this step will mark the very last development in the chains of prophecy that bring us to the grand and glorious climax of the second coming of Christ.
These are days in which men should think, and follow principle and the divine guidance of the sacred Book, and not allow themselves to be carried along by the enthusiasm of popular sentiment.
Attacked from the Air
A HEADING to a recent news dispatch reads, “Skipper Tells of Air Attack on Ship.” Following this heading, the news note goes on to tell of bombs aimed at the ship, from the air, one of which struck the rail of the vessel.
While there has been equipment dating back for a very few years that might do such a thing as this, yet it has been reserved for the developments of the last twelve months to give such actual experiences upon the high seas.
The airship has been talked of a great deal for passenger service and other useful purposes of that character; but in actual practice it has been almost wholly confined to war, and its developments in that direction are awe-inspiring.
One of the latest things devised is the dropping of bombs containing poisonous gases. The ordinary bomb that may be thrown from the air to explode in a city may destroy a part of a building and possibly kill a few people, but bombs that contain poisonous gases thrown in large numbers into cities would be fiendishly destructive.
The conditions in this time may show more “refinement” in some directions than in former periods, but they never showed more diabolical barbarism. God’s word says that “the heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?” Jer. 17: 9, A. R. V. The King James rendering of the text is, “desperately wicked.” In other words, God’s estimate of the average man is that he is a desperado; and conditions that are breaking out all over the world show that we do not need to apologize for the estimate God has placed upon humanity. On the other hand, the Book shows that God knows and speaks the truth concerning humanity.
The only thing that can save men from these desperate deeds is the renewing grace of Christ. A mere profession of that name is not sufficient. The heart must be really transformed from above, and thus placed in tune with the Creator. Otherwise the man develops into a desperado, his desperate character being molded by his natural temperament, and influenced greatly by his surroundings.
A Deepening Conviction
THE conviction is deepening, among the best people in all religious denominations, that the second coming of Christ is near at hand. To refer to but one of the many facts that prove this statement true, reference may be made to the speech of the Rev. W. B. Hinson, of Portland, Oregon, before the North Baptist convention recently held in Los Angeles. Mr. Hinson sees in the war now progressing in Europe, and the unrest that is so marked in this time, the “materialization of Biblical prophecy.” And he said, “Any time you see the golden glow of sunset, that might be the opening of the gates of heaven ushering in the second coming of Christ.”
The prophecies, however, are a little more definite than this quotation from Mr. Hinson would indicate. Christ will not come so suddenly as that to those who are following the unfolding of the prophecies of the Word. While prophecy is rapidly fulfilling, there are still some things that must be accomplished before Christ appears.
Nevertheless, the event is very near; and the deepening conviction that is coming over the minds of men, let it be affirmed strongly, is one of the manifest tokens of the divine love of the Father. He has a great treasure in store for those who are ready to meet His Son at His second coming; and He is seeking to impress all with the nearness of the event, and to draw them to Himself, so that they may be ready to meet Him.
Sunday Closing Everywhere
THE Northern Baptists, in their Los Angeles convention, adopted resolutions in their closing session on May 26 asking for “federal statutes to govern divorce, and the strict enforcement of Sunday closing laws everywhere.”
It is well for every individual to keep two things prominently in mind: first, that there is no hint in the Bible of a divine command for the observance of Sunday; second, that there are some of the strongest and clearest Bible prophecies to show that the enforced observance of Sunday by civil statute as a rival of the Bible Sabbath will mark one of the last struggles before the personal appearance of Christ in the clouds of heaven.
