Story of Redemption

By WILLIAM COVERT
The object of this our latest book is to save souls. It assures the sinner that the plan of redemption is for him, and encourages the Christian by presenting many of God’s promises in a new and beautiful way. It traces the plan of redemption from Eden lost to Eden restored, and makes clear the fact that Christ is “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”
One chapter is entitled “Righteousness through Christ,” and so carefully is the wonderful truth explained that it seems impossible for the honest reader to misunderstand it. The whole story is told in an easy, interesting manner, that invites the closest attention.
The illustrations have been under the supervision of a competent New York art director, whose object has been to illustrate the work in a way that will impress the truths of the text upon the mind and heart. The utmost care has been taken in the printing and binding, that they also may assist in setting forth the Gospel.
The book contains 237 octavo pages, exclusive of four full-page three-color engravings. It is bound in:
Fine cloth, with emblematical cover design, colored edges — $1 00
Fine cloth, with emblematical cover design, aluminum title, gold edges — 1 25
Canvassing outfit, postpaid — 60

ADVANCE SHEETS WERE RECENTLY SENT TO OUR STATE CANVASSING AGENTS, AND THEY SAY . . . .

It Will . . . Do Good “I will be glad to see the book, and am sure it will be a work that will sell well, and do a great deal of good.”
An Attractive Book . . . . . . “I think it will prove to be a good-selling book, as the type is so good, and the illustrations make it very attractive.”
An Original Book “I am sure the book will be good, and will be one that can be sold, as the price is within the reach of most people, and it is a book that has not been in the field before.”
“Fills . . . the Bill” “From what I can glean it seems to me that this book comes nearer ‘filling the bill,’ in the south, at least, than any book we have had yet. It is cheap, and can be bought by the working class, and is well illustrated. Illustrations go a long way with us.”
Has Wanted It for Two Years . . . . “I am glad that Elder Covert’s book is about to be published. I read some of the manuscript about two years ago, and have been anxious to have it come out ever since.”
An Excellent Book . . . . . “It seems to me it will be an excellent book, and no doubt a good seller.”

To Contributors.

The Signs of the Times is a purely missionary enterprise. For this reason it has felt free to ask for contributions from its friends. It pays nothing for contributions, either prose or poetry, unless solicited by the editor, and then the fact is stated when the articles are asked for. This is a plan rarely followed, but sometimes deemed expedient.

Articles Desired.

Those which set forth in the Spirit of Christ the great saving truths of God, short and to the point. It is better to treat one important truth clearly, in a short article, than many points vaguely in a long one. We desire no caustic, critical productions, which might minister to personal pride or pleasure, but can not save souls.

How Prepared.

Write plainly, with typewriter or ink, with wide space between the lines, to freely admit of editing, writing of subheads, etc. Write on one side of the sheet only. Sign the name to the manuscript, as it becomes oftentimes separated from accompanying letter. Anonymous contributions are not used, whatever their merit. If the writer does not wish his name to appear, let him furnish a pseudonym for the public. But we wish the name.

Manuscript Returned.

We will return all unused manuscript desired if stamp and directions are inclosed. We are forced sometimes to return good manuscript mainly for three reasons: (a) Sometimes the articles are too long; (b) sometimes we have a number on the same subject; (c) sometimes our plans are such that an article can not be used till it is out of date. We therefore hope that no offense will be taken by those who have freely contributed their best thought if their productions are returned. When we receive so much matter, we can not use all.

A CARD.

To ALL interested in carrying the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the inhabitants of other lands, and who desire to assist in supporting missionaries already there and others who may engage in the work, the opportunity is given to make an offering to the Foreign Mission Board of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination. Such donations should be sent to W. H. Edwards, the Treasurer of the Board, 1730 North Fifteenth Street, Philadelphia, Penn.

BIBLE ELECTION.

By M. C. Wilcox. A brief presentation of God's plan and purpose concerning man, showing that the doctrine of election, or predestination, according to the Bible, is full of comfort and instruction. It throws new light on old controversies. Bible Students' Library, No. 67; 24 pp.; price 3 cents. Address Pacific Press Pub. Co., Oakland, Cal.

BY REQUEST.

The two tracts, “Christian Demand for War” and “The Alarm of War,” are giving general satisfaction. This is evidenced by numerous testimonials and large orders. Now, those engaged in selling these tracts request us to publish them together in pamphlet form, use better paper, add an attractive cover, place the price at ten cents, and allow agents a subscription discount.
In view of the war spirit now prevailing everywhere, we have thought best to comply with this request, and are putting forth special efforts to get it up in a way that will be acceptable to the reading public. This will not in any way take the place of the tracts themselves, but is a subscription edition for the use of agents.
The title has not yet been decided upon, therefore simply order Bible Students’ Library No. 153. The price is ten cents each, or $5.00 per 100. Ready this week. Address orders to your State Tract Society or the publishers.

BIBLE SANCTIFICATION: A CONTRAST OF TRUE AND FALSE THEORIES.

By Mrs. E. G. White.
This is a pamphlet of only 84 pages, but its value is not to be judged by its size. It is just what its title indicates: a faithful presentation of Bible truth on this important subject, and an exposure of the false theories prevailing in regard to it. Every believer in Bible truth should read it. Buy it, read it, and lend it to your neighbor. Price, 10 cents.

Is It Coming to This?

A reliable correspondent writes us from the East that in one of the public schools of Brooklyn, N. Y., a little boy eight years of age, for refusing to comply with a teacher’s request to salute the flag, and perform a military march around the room, presenting imaginary arms when passing the flag, was punished by being compelled to stand all day during his studies. The next day his hands were slapped with a ruler. His mother called on the teacher, and she excused herself on the plea of “patriotism.” The principal of the school pleaded ignorance of the matter and properly stopped what never should have begun. But is this the patriotism, the liberty, equality, and fraternity, inculcated and vouchsafed by our public schools and the flag? Is not liberty, if one so desires, the freedom conscientiously to refuse to pay homage or reverence to a mere symbol? If such a régime is inaugurated as is contemplated by the “patriotic” measure before the New York Legislature and reduced to practise prematurely by this Brooklyn teacher, the flag will come to be an emblem, not of freedom, but of cruel, unmitigated tyranny. We have flag salutes in the Oakland schools. The teachers have justly and wisely excused those who desired to be excused from taking part.

Charges Against Mormonism

Mormonism.—The Independent of March 3 has a symposium on the Mormon Question, in which some startling charges are made, with the citation of authorities to prove them. For instance, Prof. Marcus E. Jones, of Salt Lake City, tells us that Mormon marriages may be performed even by a Mormon elder; that there are no penalties for performing polygamous marriages; that these marriages are always in some temple in which no Gentile is allowed to enter (the dedication of the Salt Lake City temple being an exception); that all records are kept secret; that, rather than deliver them to the officers of the law, the custodians will perjure themselves; that “ninety-nine out of every hundred polygamists when brought to trial commit perjury without hesitation, their wives and families the same, and are even advised to do so by their church leaders;” that while the Deseret News, the Mormon official organ, owned by the George Q. Cannon family, denies the practise of polygamy, Cannon is known to have resumed his polygamous relations; that there is no law in the State against polygamy or adultery that is enforced; that “social vice is rampant, and chastity is the exception rather than the rule;” but that the rank and file of the Mormon Church “are unmistakably against polygamy, are measurably honest, are socially loose,” and “many good mothers and pure girls” “deplore this rotten state of affairs.” It is a dark picture, and the only remedy suggested is the absolute disfranchisement of Mormons (an impossibility), and, by another, a national marriage and divorce law.
Other writers show that the polygamy principle was never abandoned, and is held by the Mormons as an “everlasting covenant,” an “essential” part of their religion. Their increase the past year has been over 60,000, or nearly 33 per cent. Surely the picture is a dark one, but the only way to save people from their deceptive, destructive heresies is to lift up Christ, to preach the Word.

Students’ Volunteer Convention.

—We give next week an illustrated article from our own correspondent on this great convention. It came just too late for this issue.

Pass It On

We print a piece of music composed for this paper by Professor Broman. May the beautiful words and tune sing their way into the hearts of many who are endeavoring to hold within themselves God’s blessings. We live by giving. God gave the poet his words, and the poet gave them to the public. God gave the composer the music, and he freely gave it for the public. Now the SIGNS gives both to the world in one. “Pass it on”—in life and song.

The First Night at the Helping Hand Mission

The first night at the Helping Hand Mission four came forward. A few days after that, one left for the southern part of the State. He writes: “I left the Helping Hand Mission Thursday, the 3d, and also San Francisco, and I am sure, yes, certain, that God has been with me all along. Just how kind He has been to me is more than I can explain.” There is more of the same import. Surely God is working for precious souls in the Mission. This one is a first-fruit.

Free New York!

A Brooklyn public school-teacher, it was learned by the principal, was about to begin the observance of the Sabbath kept by her divine Lord, and he forthwith threatened her with discharge, but stated that even if he kept her this year, it would be impossible for her to be a teacher next year, as the school would probably be held on Saturdays. Is New York State about to follow her motto, “Excelsior,” in the direction of tyranny and oppression? Her school laws and regulations have been taking on for some time more and more of useless technicalities which can be taken advantage of by bigots.

Force and Fear

Force and Fear.—Since Emperor Wilhelm II. of Germany began his reign, seven years ago, there have been 4,995 sentences for the offense of Lese majeste—speaking disrespectfully of the ruler. These sentences have averaged six months. Among the offenders were seven children under fifteen years of age, and 230 others less than twenty-one. This is the rule of force and fear, not persuasion and love. There will come a time when men will not only speak against the Old World rulers but will act.

The Way of Life

The way of life, both physically and spiritually, has in the past been considered a hidden way, known only to M.D.’s and D.D.’s. Disease is divided and described and catalogued in a thousand different forms, with specifics for each, but the race die as ever. Yet the gospel of health is very simple. Cleanliness, temperance in the use of that which is good, and total abstinence from that which is evil, exercise, pure food, water, and air, and a clear, calm conscience, make up the desiderata of physical health. The theologians of the Dark Ages divided up sin in about the same way as doctors have diseases, with specific penalties and remedies for each sin. But simple faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ,—the yielding to God to put away, to do, and to receive,—is God’s simple remedy for sin in all its varied forms. Why not take God’s way of life? It is found in His Word.

Salvationists and the Catholic Church

James R. Randall, a Catholic writer of note, expresses in the Catholic Mirror this thought: “I am satisfied that our holy religion will eventually draw many of these devoted Salvationists to its fold, and arm them with supernatural energy.”
