THE END OF THE TRAIL

Civilization, hampered at times, but ever moving westward, has reached the end of the trail. There is no further west.

The Panama-Pacific International Exposition celebrates the fact that the day of the pioneer, the explorer, the discoverer, is forever past. It faces and looks off the shores of its western sea, acknowledging that the “circle is almost circled.”

Significant, you think? It certainly is.

Here are titles of articles bearing on this very thought:

Internationalism and World Peace

FOR the last twenty-five or thirty years, the people of this world have been talking peace very strongly, and have been assuring us that we would never have any more wars of any consequence. But the war now in progress has come as a stunning blow; and strong men are turning in every direction for some plan by which they will be able to overcome the war spirit that is in the world, and establish perpetual peace.

In casting about for plans to insure the overthrow of the spirit of war, the idea of an international organization is suggested; and it is interesting to see how the demand for such a thing is spreading. Almost every day, we are in receipt of circulars, letters, and pamphlets, from some of the various peace organizations, calling attention to the urgent necessity of organizing the world to throttle the gods of war.

Internationalism is spreading like a craze everywhere. This spirit of internationalism is twofold in its character. An international organization of nations and an international organization of the churches is proposed; and it is believed that under this double-headed organized plan, kings, emperors, and presidents, with their cabinets, can be made to feel the force of popular opinion, and to abolish war. But this very thing that is proposed is just what the prophets have presented as the last great despotism that is to be formed before the second coming of Christ; for it must be observed that in the discussions of this question of internationalism, the church is really taking the lead, and the international church organizations will become the strongest. The papal power, being the leading church organization of the world, will stand at the head of it; and all the Protestantism that is such in name only, will give its power and influence to the papacy to work out the great plan.

Men will become intoxicated with this. They will think that they have devised an arrangement by which the world will become completely converted and eternal peace will be insured; but the prophetic word is that when they are saying “Peace and safety,” “then sudden destruction cometh upon them, . . . and they shall not escape.”

It would be wrong for us not to work for peace. It would be wrong for Christians not to pray for peace. But those who believe the Bible, know that no peace can come to this wicked world. The so-called Christian nations of Europe are now weltering in blood. This shows that their Christianity was a mere sham; for had they been Christians in fact instead of merely in name, they would not have gone to war. It goes without saying that there are many individual Christians in every one of these nations, but the nations as such cannot truly be called Christian.

With the facilities for international communication in this time, as soon as a question begins to engage the attention of the public and acquire a degree of popularity, it spreads most rapidly to every part of the world.

With this question of internationalism headed by the ecclesiastical power becoming the watchword of this time, the careful student of prophecy can see how quickly the words of the prophet may be fulfilled and the great climax be reached. This is a question that should be watched most closely.

It has often been stated, in these columns, that the thirteenth, fourteenth, and seventeenth chapters of Revelation in particular set forth in a striking way a world federation with a religious head. We should note its developments, for it will come with unwonted rapidity.

Trusting Where We Cannot Trace

By M. C. W.

The life of the Christian is not always a blaze of glory. It is not always bright or even plain. There are “the green pastures,” but often rough are the ways which lead to them. There are “the still waters,” or “waters of rest,” but he often reaches them over dark and rugged paths. There are valleys over which is cast the fearful shadow of death. There are dungeons of despair, sloughs of despond, stretches of pain and weariness.

Do not look upon these as strange. They are some of the many things needed to develop character. In these trying, testing, soul-wrestling times, let us remember the promises the great Master of life has given for these periods which might cause depression. Here is one. Read it again. Let the Comforter inscribe it upon the memory and heart: “Who is among you that feareth Jehovah, that obeyeth the voice of His servant? he that walketh in darkness, and hath no light, let him trust in the name of Jehovah, and rely upon his God.” Isa. 50: 10.

That is the safe way. Do not try to kindle fires to substitute for God’s light. Wait with Him in the darkness. It is better to abide in the gloom with Him than to walk without Him at noonday.

Remember Him who walked earth’s difficult paths before you. Not always did He stand before expectant, eager multitudes who hung on His every word, or sit at the friendly board in the quiet retreat at Bethany, or bathe in the ineffable glory of the transfiguration, with its divine voice of approval. There was rejection at Nazareth, the undeserved enmity of a whole people, the dark hours of Gethsemane, the blackness of the cross. Every rood of the way He asks you to walk is marked by the footprints of the Man of Calvary, who sought, above all things, that God’s will should be wrought in Him, by Him, through Him, to the eternal good of us and the glory of God. Trust, dear soul, and stay on God.

“We see not, know not. All our way Is night—with Thee alone is day. From out the torrent’s troubled drift, Above the storm, our prayers we lift, Thy will be done.”

A Talented and Faithful Laborer Fallen

MANY of the readers of this paper have been acquainted with Elder O. A. Olsen, who has been prominently connected with this work for many years. They will be pained to learn that he died quite suddenly at Hinsdale Sanitarium, Hinsdale, Illinois, Friday morning, January 29.

Although Elder Olsen had reached his threescore years and ten, yet he labored with the vigor of youth right up to the very end. Last summer was an unusually busy season with him. He attended many of our general meetings, and rendered very efficient help. Just before his death, he was in attendance at an important conference, where many perplexing problems had to be solved. Consequently he became quite well tired out. In this condition he was taken with pneumonia, and very quickly succumbed to the disease.

For eight years of his useful life—from October 17, 1888, to February 19, 1897—Elder Olsen served as president of our General Conference. Previous to his election to that office, he had served successfully as president of some of our most important local conferences, and had also been connected with our work in Scandinavia and elsewhere.

At the time of his death, he was general secretary of the foreign department of our work in North America.

Few men have led a busier or more strenuous life. He believed with all his heart that the prophecies show that the Lord is coming very soon, and all his energies were devoted to spreading this good news among his fellow men.

All who enjoyed the acquaintance of this faithful laborer, prized his genial disposition and his earnest Christian spirit. It was an inspiration and an uplift to associate with him. Our sincerest sympathy is extended to the bereaved widow, who is in feeble health, and to the two sons, Dr. A. B. Olsen and Prof. M. E. Olsen.

Youthful Highwaymen

A RECENT news dispatch tells of two armed youths who locked the cashier of a bank in the vault and got away with five thousand dollars in cash. News dispatches of this kind are becoming so common that they attract but very little attention, and yet they are significant of a growing condition in society. The criminal element is becoming bolder and more daring all the time, and the officers of the law are wholly unable to cope with the situation.

One striking feature of the condition is that youths yet in their teens are among those who are most active and daring in these criminal depredations. The foundations of our social structure are being undermined, regardless of the fact that many people are trying to have us believe to the contrary. One of the noticeable characteristics of history is that when luxury, degrading vice, and criminality are sweeping a nation to its doom, its leading men are chanting its praises the most loudly, and painting pictures of great progress and development that the future holds in store.

These occurrences might be studied with profit in this time in which we are living. Most people can give an unbiased judgment of the conditions of the past, in which they are not personally concerned; but there are very few people who can properly read or understand the present. Their personal interests and personal ambitions are too apt to blind them to the indisputable facts that ought to show them the unsoundness of their theories.

God Is Love, Not the Author of War

THE text says, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” 1 John 4:8. There is absolutely no hatred in the character of God. Therefore God cannot be the author of war or of anything else that is dependent upon hatred for its existence. Wicked men become so depraved and cruel as to compel God to destroy them, but even in the destruction of the wicked there is no hatred on the part of God. “God is love.”

Annual Meeting of the Pacific Press Publishing Association

On account of the general meetings to be held in Mountain View in connection with the Missionary and Bookmen’s Convention, March 5-15, at which time a large number of our members will be present, the regular annual meeting of the Pacific Press Publishing Association was adjourned from Monday, January 25, 1915, to Monday, March 8, 1915, at 10 A. M. All the business that is usually transacted at our regular annual meeting, including the election of directors for the ensuing year, the advisability of amending, repealing or adopting new by-laws, will be presented for consideration. We therefore extend a hearty invitation to all the members of the Pacific Press Publishing Association to attend this meeting on March 8.

This change in plan was made to accommodate many of the leading members of the association, including General Conference representatives and others who will be in attendance at the Missionary and Bookmen’s Convention to be held in Mountain View, March 5-15.
