The Pope and Peace Measures

A RECENT dispatch from Rome says that the “Vatican is preparing to publish further facts concerning efforts by the pope and the Vatican to prevent the war and the measures now being taken to end it.” It is expected that a papal encyclical will soon be issued upon the subject, and it is also understood that “the pope is contemplating a meeting of the Roman Catholic bishops at which will be expressed the feeling of the Catholic world toward the war.”
The activity of the papacy in the propaganda for peace is very marked. Every few days, there are dispatches telling of new developments in that direction. As the nations become more exhausted by the war, they will be all the more eager to turn to some source that will afford the prospects for peace. Without much doubt, events are shaping so as to place the church power, both Catholic and Protestant, in the lead. Powerful international organizations will be formed to prevent war. The church power will be the very core of this work, but it will not be successful. God has foretold how it will result.
The intensity of these times causes very sudden eruptions of the social forces. This was remarkable in the outbreak of the European war in 1914. As some have expressed it, it came as an explosion of dynamite. But men had been saying all the time, that it could not come. They had been prophesying, for a quarter of a century, that we had had our last war. And thus they will prophesy again.
These forces that will unite following the European war, will tell us that peace has been secured throughout the world. They will tell us again that we have had our last war. But the mutterings of the feebly suppressed social volcano that will be manifest throughout the world, ought to enable men to see that their theories are not founded upon either evidence or reason, and the Book of God tells us what will be the outcome. It says, speaking of the time just before the second coming of Christ, that “when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” 1 Thess. 5: 3.
We need to stand in the light, so that the deceptiveness of appearances may not lead us into delusions; and the only sure way of doing this is to study and heed the prophetic declarations of the sacred Book.

Lord’s Day Congress

THE Lord’s Day Congress, brief mention of which was made in these columns a few weeks ago, is convening in Oakland, July 27 to August 1. It is advertised that Vice President Marshall and the governors of half a dozen states, together with prominent men from all parts of the world, will be in attendance. One of the announcements says:
“Sunday excursions and theatrical performances, commercialized Sunday amusements, saloons, business, and ‘general apathy’ are classed as the ‘foes of Sunday rest laws,’ and they are some of the subjects which are expected to develop vigorous arguments.”
The readers of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES are well aware of the prophecy in the thirteenth and fourteenth chapters of Revelation which will be fulfilled at no distant time by the enforced observance of Sunday through laws that will be enacted by the various states and nations of the world.
Sunday has no foundation whatever in the Scriptures, and it is very strange that religious teachers who claim to follow the precepts of the Bible should insist on enacting human laws to set a human institution in the place of the divinely appointed Sabbath.
This question will soon be the greatest storm center of the ages. This is said not as a human speculation. The authority presented is the voice of the divine prophets of old.
This paper will be well represented at the convention, and we will expect to have some interesting things to present to our readers in later issues.

The Labor War Also

NOTWITHSTANDING the big war that she has on her hands, England is held in constant anxiety because of her labor difficulties. The government is taking a strong hand in the situation, and hopes to avert a domestic crisis such as a general strike would produce at this critical hour in her history. But utterances like the following from a paper published in London are not calculated to pacify the discontented laborer. This paper says:
“Such minor strikes as have occurred arose almost entirely from the greed and tyranny of the capitalists, who wished to increase their abnormal profits, due to the war, by the refusal of any increase of wages to enable their wage slaves to meet rising prices. . . . This is regrettable from our point of view; but Mr. Lloyd-George’s vilification of the people as drunken skulkers, when they were doing nearly all the fighting and all the work, . . . is inexcusable.”
The capitalist, without any question, is reaping an abundant harvest from this war. The business that has come to this country alone from the warring nations of Europe, and as a direct result of the war, has now reached something over a billion dollars. It will be said that a great deal of this money goes into the pockets of the laboring class, and that is true. Yet at the same time, it is also true that immense profits from this great business are going to the capitalists who are conducting it. The people know these facts, and they are discussing them, and this discussion is producing more and more discontent and uneasiness.
The right and the wrong of the question is a matter that does not particularly enter into the discussions in the columns of this paper; but the great fact of this struggle is a monumental fulfilment of prophecy, and this is the one thing to which we would like to keep the attention of our readers directed. It is far more important that we should see the prophecies which are fulfilling in these struggles, than that we should engage ourselves as a party to either side of the contentions that are going on.
Let the fact stand out clear and strong that God has said the last days will be made perilous because men will be lovers of self and lovers of money; and furthermore, that the striking prophecy of James informs us that intense suffering and anguish will come to those who have “heaped together treasure” at the expense of the laborer who has mowed down their fields.
TORNADO IN MISSOURI
TORNADO IN MISSOURI

The Treasures of Hail

A NUMBER of earthquake shocks were experienced in southern California and northern Mexico during the latter part of June. There was some loss of life, and considerable property damage. On June 25, a tornado virtually destroyed Red Cliff and Grassy Lake, in Alberta. These earthquakes and this storm have very quickly followed the tornadoes and wind and rain and hailstorms that worked so much havoc in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma on June 18. And these storms were followed by what is thus far probably the worst storm of the season on July 7, when Kentucky, Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, Illinois, and Nebraska were visited by tornado, violent windstorm, hail, and flood.
Reports coming from northeastern India tell of the fearful hailstorm there, which destroyed property, killing people and animals, and breaking down everything but the most substantial buildings. A thousand houses are said to be in ruins in one small city. Some of the hailstones weighed nearly two pounds apiece. Trees that had withstood the storms of centuries, were overturned and torn to pieces.
Reading of these storms, and particularly of the hail, which is becoming so much more frequent, reminds one vividly of the question that the Lord asked Job: “Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?” Job 38: 22, 23.
The climax of these stormy conditions will be reached under the seventh plague. “There fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.” Rev. 16: 21.
Some men try to explain away mystically these plain warnings from the divine Book; but the wickedness of this world is reaching the point where God can no longer protect it from the prince of the power of the air, and the judgments of the Almighty are consequently falling everywhere.

The Shooting of J. P. Morgan

J. P. MORGAN was shot twice by a lunatic crank. The wounds were not serious, and Mr. Morgan's life is spared. Men are apt to pass this circumstance by with a remark that only a crank did it. But the conditions of this time and the discussions that grow out of the conditions, have a tendency to develop just such men as the man Holt, who shot Morgan. We may condemn the discussions, and we may condemn the conditions, but our condemnation does not stop the product. Only divine foreknowledge can tell the final outcome of such a situation.

Mrs. E. G. White Passes Away

OUR readers have been aware that Mrs. E. G. White has been critically ill for a number of weeks. She died July 16 at 3:40 p. m. Brief services were held on the lawn of her late home near St. Helena, California, July 18, and at the California Conference camp meeting, in session at Richmond, July 19, when her son Elder W. C. White started with the body for Battle Creek, Michigan, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband, Elder James White.
In view of the important work of her long and busy life, we will give considerable space next week to telling about it.
