GOD THE PRESERVER
Earlier text: LESSON VI.—NOVEMBER 9.—TARES

A BOOK FOR THE TIMES.

It is worse than a waste of time to study aught but truth. The shortness of life and the multiplicity of its duties render it impossible for any one to read even a tithe of the books that are printed. As this life is given us as a probationary season in which to prepare for eternity, it is profitable to fill our minds with that which will fit us for enjoying the future life.
One of the books which, while giving entertainment, is instructive and elevating to an eminent degree, is "The Great Controversy between Christ and Satan." The scope of the book is wide; the style, tho simple, is eloquent and fascinating, all the while appealing to the mind as the utterance of truth. Beginning with the siege and destruction of Jerusalem by Titus, the reader is taken down through the early history of the Christian Church, the great apostasy, the persecutions of the faithful, the history of the Waldenses, and the various epochs of special reformation, to our own time. Then is taken up the fulfilment of prophecy, the subjects of The Sanctuary, The Law of God, The Snares of Satan, The Aims of the Papacy, Spiritualism, The Impending Conflict, The Time of Trouble, God's People Delivered, The Judgment, and other themes pertaining to the close of this age. As a dissertation on the Scriptures and a synopsis of history pertaining to the times specified, this work has no equal. The prices are as follows:—

The Christian’s Campaign for Victory

It is true of many Christian professors, as was said of the American people by Mr. Wm. R. Campbell, in a recent address on the spread of Mormonism, “they are so easily satisfied with a small victory that the devil can afford to permit them to win a little skirmish now and then, so as to encourage them to rest and congratulate themselves while he proceeds to fortify himself in high places.” The victories the Christian wins by the grace of God from day to day are not given to him to satisfy him, but to encourage him to seek further victory. Our race is for life, and our warfare is not a single battle or skirmish, but a campaign, only to be settled by a final victory.

Contempt for God’s Law Is Anarchy

Whether the man be a professed Christian or a ranting infidel, if he treats God's law with contempt he is an anarchist at heart. The Christ of God said before He came to this world, “Lo, I come; . . . ‘I delight to do Thy will, O My God: yea, Thy law ‘is within My heart.’” And when here He said: “My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me;” “I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide ‘in His love.’” “If any man have not the Spirit of ‘Christ, he is none of His.’”

F. L. Mead’s Death

Another laborer has fallen, and this time Brother F. L. Mead, the superintendent of Bulawayo mission in South Africa. The meager news, just at hand, tells us that pneumonia was the cause of his death. So large and strong he was when we saw him last, it did not seem as tho disease could ever conquer him. Our mission work loses a noble helper. May God bless his lonely wife and bereaved children. They have our sympathy.

Contempt of God’s Law

Let it be forever remembered that the root of all anarchy is contempt of the law of God.
