A Father's Love for the Lost

By T. E. Bowen

THE Scriptures should be read from the view-point of a loving heavenly Father yearning for lost sons and daughters. His heart throbs with loving interest for every wandering child of His. His they are, tho in rebellion to Him simply because they know Him not. Knowing Him would mean loving Him; and through that knowledge and love, their hearts would be won.

Teaching Truth with Authority

It was said of the Master, when He finished His Sermon on the Mount, that “He taught them as one having authority, and not as other scribes”; and because He taught in this way, the multitudes were astonished at His teaching. The Master had a definite knowledge of truth. He definitely taught the Old Testament Scriptures, which He had inspired the prophets to write. The individual who knows truth, and who speaks it, must speak it with the earnestness of authority. The positive statement of any truth is bound to produce conviction. The positive statement of truth is interesting also, and entertaining. The positive truth of God’s word opens the only door of hope to us poor mortals who are stranded on this sin-cursed planet. And why should we not study that Word until we know it? And why should we not teach it with authority, as did our Master? There is power in divine truth. The Bible says, “Thy word is truth.” Then the work for Christians is to study the Bible until they know it and are imbued with its converting power; and then, like their Master, they can speak with authority, for they know the sure foundation upon which they stand. There is no element of doubt or uncertainty in positive truth.

One of the most expressive statements in the word of God is the text, “Jehovah’s hand is not shortened, that it can not save; neither His ear heavy, that it can not hear; but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you, so that He will not hear.” God has infinite power. He saves to the uttermost (Heb. 7:25); but He does not save us in sin—He saves us from sin; and it is only when we persist in clinging to our sins, regardless of His entreaties, that we make it impossible for Him to save us. Whenever we are willing to give up the sin, we will find the Lord always ready at hand to save us. For is it not said in the Word, “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life”? And again, we have the question, “He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” Rom. 8:32. The love that prompted the Father to yield up His Son is yearning over us to save us, and He knows that we could not be happy while our sins are clinging to us, so He insists upon separating us from these sins. We may take our choice,—we may cling to our sins and be separated from God, or by accepting Him we may have our sins taken away from us, and enjoy the great privilege of everlasting life.

Tornado and Fire at Nome

Despatches from Nome, Alaska, under date of October 6, say that the city was visited by a terrific tornado, which demolished more than five hundred buildings. Following the tornado, the city took fire, and soon became a seething furnace. Some of the scientists have been telling us that these tornadoes could not be created except in greatly heated centers, and therefore they have assured us that they would not be found in the far north; but this class of storms, particularly during this year, have made themselves conspicuous by visiting quite a wide area of our globe. This journal has been pointing out, for a third of a century, that these physical disturbances that are becoming so common can not be accounted for by any ordinary or natural causes. They will continue to increase in intensity and destructiveness. They are among the striking signs of the times in which we are living.

The Dangers of Light Wines and Beers

The United States Brewers’ Association, in its recent convention at Atlantic City, adopted resolutions favoring the extension of suffrage to all American women, and expressed its gratitude for the work done by women in many states toward abolishing disorderly houses. One of our Western editors says: “The position taken by the brewers is the right one. The makers of wholesome light wines and beers can go farther than any other equal number of men to solve the distressing problem of drunkenness, if they will divorce themselves from any connection with the interests which encourage hard drinking, and protect and finance the low saloons in which drunkenness is common.” The editor of the paper from which this quotation is taken poses as a reformer. He has been helping to clean up the red light districts in some of our large cities, but he thinks that these reforms should not go too far, that there are light wines and beers that are wholesome. The large number who are clinging to the groundless notion that even the small amount of alcohol in either wine or beer may be wholesome, are hindering the efforts of true reformers. And because men are satisfied with superficial or half-way reforms, they are led into the delusion that the world is getting better all the time. The man who is drinking wine or beer, is attending the primary school of drunkenness, and is being led on to form the habit that will require stronger drink later. There are very few exceptions to the rule.

Poverty Amid Christian Civilization

Students of social conditions in Germany predict that the suffering from poverty and unemployment during the coming winter will break all previous records. The statistics show that fifty million has been spent by Germany during the last year to better the conditions of the poor. State and municipal authorities are busy with plans to minimize the suffering, and yet with the idea in view of not pauperizing the ones they help. The question of the vast multitudes who are “below the bread line” is one of the great problems of all the leading nations. Some of these who do not have sufficient food are employed on starvation wages, and others are without employment. While these conditions exist and the number of the destitute is increasing, we yet have a few tens of thousands of men who are multimillionaires, and a very few who are reputed to be billionaires. And while these conditions of pinching poverty are seen on the one hand, and untold wealth on the other, we still claim for ourselves a great Christian civilization. How much of Christianity is there in such conditions as these? If the Master were here in person, He would rebuke the hypocrisies of this time as strongly as He rebuked anything that existed when He was here eighteen hundred years ago.

Yuan Shih Kai Elected President

On October 6 the members of the House of Representatives and Senate of the new Chinese republic elected Yuan Shih Kai as president. The vote was very close. He received only one more than the necessary two thirds. Yuan Shih Kai was the provisional president, and his only prominent rival was Li Yuen Heng, provisional vice-president, who received 179 votes against the 507 received by Yuan Shih Kai. On the following day Li Yuen Heng was elected vice-president by a strong vote. The new president is fifty-four years old, and most of his adult life has been spent in official capacity. As soon as the election was declared, notes from the various powers, recognizing the Chinese republic, were despatched to the Chinese foreign office. It is to be hoped that this election will settle the turbulence that has been distressing China during the last few months. Right at the time the president was elected, a number of American and Norwegian missionaries were in the hands of Chinese bandits, and were in great peril. Regular soldiers from the Chinese army were fighting for their rescue.

The Concentration of Wealth

Some of the newspaper writers of France have made some rather caustic comments on Mr. Carnegie's associations with royalty. They claim that he is the first common citizen of this generation who has been received and feasted by kings, queens, and princes as if he belonged to the true nobility. They have given him the title of “King Billionaire I.” Mr. Carnegie may not be worth a billion, but he is certainly worth very close to that amount; and when we consider that he has accumulated that vast sum in his own lifetime, and when we consider further that there are at least two or three other men who have accumulated like sums in about the same time, we are shown in a very forcible manner the great concentration of wealth that is going on. As the world goes, these men have good reputations for morality; but such concentration of wealth is ominously significant.

Religious Tolerance Granted in Peru

The Chamber of Deputies in Peru, on October 4, by a vote of 66 to 4, adopted an amendment to the constitution granting religious tolerance in the exercise of any religion. Hitherto every form of religion except the Roman Catholic has been prohibited. Nearly two millenniums ago the Master said, “This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” Matt. 24:14. Is it not truly remarkable how religious liberty during the last three quarters of a century has been granted in first one intolerant nation and then another, until the whole world is being opened for those who are proclaiming the good news of the gospel and kingdom of Christ?

Carranza Proclaims Himself President

On October 5 General Carranza proclaimed himself president of the Mexican republic, and established Hermosillo, state of Sonora, as the provisional capital. The new government has secured a loan of $500,000 by placing a 50 per cent lien on the customs of the state of Sonora. This will be an interesting complication in the Mexican broil.

London Drunkenness Arrests Rise in 1912

The statistics for London during 1912 show almost twice as many arrests for drunkenness as the year 1911. It is believed that some of this increase is due to the fact that there were fewer days lost through strikes in 1912, and that the people were more steadily employed.

Hurricane and Tidal Wave in the Friendly Islands

A hurricane, followed by a tidal wave, which was “accompanied by volcanic phenomena,” recently visited the Friendly Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
