LESSONS FROM THE MOUNTAINS

LESSON 13.—SEPTEMBER 27.—THE MESSAGE OF JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH WILL ESTABLISH THE EVERLASTING KINGDOM.

The day of wrath, now near at hand, will test the stability of character: Rev. 6:15-17. Ungodliness is the object of God's wrath. Rom. 1:18. Therefore the ungodly will not endure the test. Ps. 1:5. The Gospel is God's provision through which and in which we may be able to stand. 1 Cor. 15:1, 2. This means a present victory over Satan (Eph. 6:11), which will result in our being able to stand permanently (verses 13, 14). This is simply the experience of justification by faith (Rom. 5:1, 2), and this is the only experience which will enable us to stand when the Lord comes. The whole experience is one of faith on our part (Rom. 11:20) and of manifested power on God's part (Rom. 14:4, R. V.). It is, therefore, abundantly evident that “the everlasting Gospel” in the threefold message of Rev. 14:6-12, which is to prepare for the coming of the Son of Man as king (verse 14) must be the original Gospel of the coming of the Seed, the Gospel of the “unspeakable gift” of Jesus in the flesh as our righteousness, the Gospel of justification by faith. And through the giving of this message in the earth “in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which . . . shall stand forever.”

QUESTIONS.

  1. What will the men of might do in the earth in the day of God's wrath?
  2. How will they ask to be hidden from that wrath?
  3. What reason will they give for such a request?
  4. Against what is God's wrath directed?
  5. What effect will this have upon the ungodly?
  6. What provision has the Lord made that His people may stand now and eternally?
  7. What present experience does this bring to believers?
  8. What future experience is thus assured?
  9. Under what other form of expression is this same experience presented to us in the scripture?
  10. What will this enable us to do when the Lord comes?
  11. By what only do we stand?
  12. Whose direct working is it which makes us stand?
  13. What is the purpose of the threefold message of Revelation 14?
  14. What must be the nature of this Gospel message?
  15. What will be accomplished through the giving of this message in this generation?

New Article Series and a Sad Calamity

In this issue closes that excellent series of articles on the coming of the Lord by Mr. L. A. Phippeny. We hardly dare hope they have had the reading they deserve. That would have carried them beyond our large circle of readers.
The Revelation.—Shortly, perhaps in our next issue, will begin a number of expository, practical, and spiritual articles on the most wonderful book of the Bible, the epitome of all the others, “The Revelation of Jesus Christ.” These will continue indefinitely. Of themselves we believe they will be worth the subscription price.
Next week we begin a new series of articles (illustrated) on the Prophecy of Zechariah, by Mr. Roderick S. Owen. The title of the first article is, “God’s Purpose as Revealed in the Descendants of Jacob.” The book of Zechariah is to many a book of mystery, but we are sure that this series will give much light. These will continue a little more than three months; and forty cents will furnish you the Signs for that time. And this series is but one item of many.
A Sad Calamity.—A press despatch brings the sad news that five young people—one man and four women—connected with the Battle Creek Sanitarium, four nurses and one stenographer, were drowned in Goguac Lake the night of August 26. They were coming to shore after a ride around the lake just as the steamer Welcome with an excursion party was leaving her dock. The steamer struck the small boat amidships, and all the occupants were thrown into the water. Only one of the party of six, a young woman, was rescued. This is much sadder news than that of the sanitarium fire of a few months ago. Human lives are more than brick, mortar, and lumber, however deftly combined and usefully fashioned. Money losses man can replace, but to call the dead to life he can not. From the sanitarium ashes will rise a better building; but these young lives, so far as this world is concerned, are snuffed out as a candle forever. Our sympathy is extended to the friends and relatives of those who sleep, and to our sister institution, for this heavy blow which has fallen upon her family. May we all learn the lesson which, even by such sad events, the loving Father would teach us.

This Is the Golden Rule

No man is free who will not grant freedom; nay, more, who will not contend for freedom for his strongest opponent, politically, socially, and religiously. No Republican is a free man who is not willing to grant equal freedom to his Democratic neighbor. No Democrat is a free man who will not contend for equal freedom, right, and privilege for his Republican neighbor. And the same is true of Socialism and Populism. No Roman Catholic knows either political or religious freedom who will not demand equal freedom for the Protestant. And no Protestant knows the freedom of Christian liberty who will not demand equal freedom for the Catholic. No labor unionist is free who will not contend for the same rights and privileges for his non-union neighbor that he demands for himself, and the opposite is true.
This is the Golden Rule, and it is very plain to any one who will look upon it from the only logical, consistent, primal American, and Christian view point—the man. It is to the man that God has given these rights. It is the man as a man that the State recognizes. His political views, so long as they do not contravene the equal rights of his fellows, are extraneous to his equal rights as a man. And whosoever —call him by what name we will, number him howsoever many we may—does not recognize these inestimable and inalienable rights for all, be they opposed to him politically or religiously, is himself enslaved in his own mind with a bondage worse than the chains that bound Peter in a Roman prison or fastened the dying martyr to the stake. And yet much that is called freedom in these days of multiplied organizations is freedom for the members of the organization alone, and that within the organization, and subjection on the part of all others. Such a conception of freedom is veriest tyranny. He only advocates true freedom who advocates freedom for the other man.

Power to Do the Right

One of the many happy renderings of the American Standard Revised Version preferable to the Common Version is that of 2 Tim. 2:3. The Common Version reads, “Thou therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” The American Standard Revision reads, “Suffer hardness with me as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” The marginal rendering is, “Take thy part in suffering hardship, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” Not only endure hardship, but manfully do your part. Be no shirker in life’s conflicts.
It is not the knowledge of right and wrong which the world most needs, but power to do the right. A recent book filled with moral maxims and theories of life from the “Precepts of Ptah-Hotep of Egypt to Thoreau,” closes its introduction with the remark, “I end it with a deepened conviction that the knowledge of Good and Evil has been complete in the world from the beginning of history, and that mankind has had nothing to learn since but the application of it.” Man wants power, but knowledge will not furnish it. And there is but one religion which can furnish it—Christianity, the life and power of God sent down to humanity.

Power Through Harmony with God

The Great Power of the Universe is God. If you desire power, come into harmony with Him. He who possessed power, out of harmony with God, would surely use it to an ignoble, unworthy, destructive purpose. He could not consistently ask God for power who would use that power against God’s purpose. Come into harmony with God, then ask and receive power.

Things Foretold

A new book for children has been laid upon our table, entitled, “Things Foretold.” It is an interesting book, a needed book, just such a book as ought to be in every family where there are children. The author is W. N. Glenn, for so many years the editor of Our Little Friend. The book, as the title suggests, deals in prophecy, and makes it comprehensive to children. Unbelief in the Bible is rampant now-a-days; surely Christian parents should be interested in fortifying the mind against its ravages. There is nothing better to do this than an understanding of how God has, through the Bible, foretold the things of the future. When these things come to pass, they demonstrate that God's Word is true. See Isa. 46:9, 10. The book contains twenty-one interesting chapters, each page has an illustrated border, and each chapter is otherwise illustrated. Nicely bound in boards with illuminated cover, price 50 cents. With Our Little Friend for one year, 75 cents. It is a good book to start a child's library with, after the Bible. Address Pacific Press, Oakland, Cal.

Of Devotion to What?

A prominent minister of a Philadelphia church says, in justifying church entertainments:—
The Lord pity any church that has not enough of the spirit of Christ in it to stand a church fair, wherein devout offerings are brought to the tithing house in the spirit of true devotion.
What does he mean by “stand”?—to endure? or to hold its own against? If offerings are brought to God in a “spirit of true devotion” to Him, why is a church fair necessary which always consumes so much time and expense? We will not deny that there is a “spirit of devotion” connected with the church fair, but so far as evidence from many sources goes, it is devotion to pleasure, to fun, to frolic, to appetite. A spirit of true devotion to Christ needs no stimulus of a church fair with its accompanying folly. It would be much better to say: “The Lord pity any church that has so little of the spirit of Christ as to tolerate or feel a longing for a church fair.” There are infinitely better pleasures for the Christian.

Bible Study and the Quarterly Calendar

Those interested in Bible study, especially in the original languages, and who have not time to attend school, would do well to send for the Quarterly Calendar for August, of the American Institute of Sacred Literature, University of Chicago, Chicago, Ill. It contains much information as to the object, scope, principles, and personnel of the Council of Seventy, who are directing this work. Special effort is put forth to stimulate Bible study, and ministers are asked to make September 14 and September 28 Bible-Study Sundays, the latter for city churches. It would seem that pastors would respond to this appeal at least once a year, when there ought to be fifty weeks of Bible study in a twelve month.
