THANKS

By Editor

We thank our many friends who have sent us orders, with cash, to send the SIGNS to others. It is a source of real encouragement to us.

We would suggest the value of a note of explanation sent to the one who is to receive the paper, advising how the paper is sent and dismissing the fear that the receiver may entertain that he will be called upon to pay for it. Many times a party declines to take a paper from the post-office, fearing he may become the victim of some unscrupulous publisher, and the postmaster sends a card asking that the paper be discontinued, assigning as a reason “refused,” when, were the party duly informed, the paper would be gladly received and read with interest.

Sample copies may do no good. They can not do harm; some have taken excellent effect. We send them free. One says: “Having received a copy of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES and wishing to secure the paper for a year, I take pleasure in securing a club of four yearly subscribers. [Gives four addresses.] Enclosed find draft for $4.00.”

Another writes: “You sent me a few copies of your paper, and I liked it so well I thought I best take it. I enclose 75 cents for six months, and I thank you very kindly for the copies.”

The Power of Christ’s Love

The power of the servant of God lies not in his education, his methods, his manner, however these may help; his power to win souls is in the life and love of Jesus Christ which he ministers.

W. T. Knox Returns Home

Brother W. T. Knox, President of the Pacific Union Conference, arrived in this city from Battle Creek, Mich., on the 23d ult. He left Battle Creek before the close of the General Conference, in company with his wife, being called home by the sudden death of his father-in-law, Brother M. W. Childs.

Summer session of the University of California.

The University of California will hold a summer session from June 27 to August 7. It is promised that the work will be of a highly valuable and practical character. Among the subjects taken up will be the English and Spanish languages, mathematics, physics, mineralogy, agriculture, horticulture, and irrigation. For full particulars address the Recorder of the Faculties, Berkeley, California.

Our General Conference

Our General Conference, just closed, has been most remarkable for the strong missionary tone that pervaded it. The interest and enthusiasm that was expressed in regard to the importance of going to every corner of the globe to give the great message of the soon coming of Christ was not only deeply inspiring, but it was also gloriously cheering. The coming of Christ is right at hand. Everything in the world shows it. This is the most glorious news that has come to the children of men in all the ages. Then why should we not be filled with the enthusiasm of telling the whole world about it, so that every one can have the opportunity of being ready for the event? Rather, how is it possible for any one who is in possession of such knowledge, to keep from going just as far as he can, to give the good news to others? It is to be sincerely hoped and prayed that the spirit of missionary zeal that took possession of the conference may reach and possess every believer in the coming of the Lord in all parts of the world. May it fill his soul with the spirit and burden to give his life to the one work of winning men to Christ, so that they may be ready for His coming.

Vice and Christian Civilization

It is an almost uniform testimony that vice is more rampant in Chicago than it was two years ago, yet Mr. Harrison, under whose administration this state of things exists, was re-elected the other day by a majority of over 28,000 votes. What a commentary this is on our so-called Christian civilization! This candidate for mayor openly appealed to the vicious elements of the city to support him in his election, and he is elected. And so it is in New York and San Francisco and other cities. Vice is rampant, increasingly so, but a corresponding, manifest, growing indifference is evident among the people.

Money More Than Man

Money more than man.—In the hands of a municipal government rests to quite an extent the health of the people in the municipality. This ought to be one of the first considerations of a city government. But so far from this being the case in some cities, there has been an utter neglect in these respects. For instance, in Chicago, it is said that 600 lives are lost annually thru defects in the sewer system, which an intercepting sewer would remedy. This could soon be done, but the president of the drainage board declares that at the present rate it will be 3½ years before the sewer is finished and the defect costing fifty lives a month is remedied. Life is regarded cheaply in these days of greed of gain.

OFFICERS OF THE LAW, AND CRIMINALS.

By T.

THE evidence is accumulating all the time, showing that the criminal element of the large cities are in league with the officers of the law, and it is about impossible to detect the perpetrators of crime. We have often referred to this fact in these pages, and it is our desire to keep it before our readers, so that they may not be deceived by the popular notion that the world is getting so much better. Things are getting worse, and the evidence is accumulating on every hand that shows it to be so. And not only is this the case, but the Word of God tells us that the world will continue to get worse and worse until the whole land will be literally filled with violence.

Another illustration of the corrupt affiliation of criminals and municipal officers is found in the following paragraphs from a recent New York World:—

Twelve days have passed since ten-year-old Willie McCormick was kidnapped. And what are the police doing? The answer is, Nothing. Giving out assurances of activity is not action. Reading descriptions of the boy to the policemen at roll-call is not action. Asking the detectives incidentally to “look out on their rounds” is not action. Spinning theories that the boy may have run away is not action.

This kidnapping case brings sharply before the eyes of the public the deplorable and dangerous fact of the complete demoralization of the police force. Its rogues are busy protecting vice and crime. Its hard-working members are discouraged by the spectacle of rewards for its rogues, and punishments for those officers and policemen who are guilty of the “overzeal” of trying to do their duty.

It is dangerous to make an arrest; the arrested man may have a “pull.” It is dangerous to investigate a mystery; the bottom of the mystery may secrete some heeler or his friend. It is dangerous even faithfully to walk a beat; the policeman may see something, may be compelled to take cognizance of something, that will get him into trouble with the politicians.

If so many of the people were not wholly indifferent to the evil that is involved, such things as are described in the foregoing paragraphs could not exist. But the people are allowing such evils to go on unchecked, and the conscience is becoming more and more hardened to them. It is seriously thought by many that such wickedness can not be helped, and that it will have to be tolerated. But what will be the awful results of such a course of wrong-doing? Any one should see that it must sooner or later plunge the whole world into general disaster.

The Lord destroyed the old world with a flood, and the cities of the plain by fire. And He says in His Word that when the wickedness of the world again reaches the stage that it did in the times of Noah and Lot, He will visit destruction as He did then. But there will be this difference: In that time there was only a temporary dethronement of evil for an object-lesson to following ages. But in this time sin will have run its course, and the Lord Jesus Christ will come to resurrect the righteous dead, immortalize the righteous living, and forever redeem them from the curse of sin by destroying every vestige of evil, along with all those who persist in sinning. Hebrew Christians and Mosaic Ritual

The Hebrew Messianic Council of Boston, Mass., has been reconstituted and will hold a convention of Hebrew Christians in Park Street Church, Boston, May 21-24. Rev. A. T. Pierson, who has been prominent for so long in missionary operations, will preside. One of the principal points to be discussed in the convention is stated to be “Is a Hebrew obliged, by the terms of essential Christianity, in becoming a Christian, to abrogate the ritual of Mosaic Judaism, the Levitical customs and ceremonies?” The announcement says that eminent scholars will discuss the question in the convention. It is to be hoped that the Word of God will have undisputed sway, and that its authority and instruction in the matter may be fully considered. The question under discussion is not new. It is the same question that Paul and the rest of the apostles had to meet in their day. And the only way to meet it properly is by the Word of God. Let God say what shall be done, and then do it, without quibble or hesitation.

Coming to the Help of the Lord

“Curse ye Meroz,” said the angel of the Lord; curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the Lord, to the help of the Lord against the mighty.” The mighty forces of evil continually war against the Lord and His ways of truth and right. The Lord wants every one of us to help Him in standing for the right. Not that He is in danger of being overthrown, but we are in danger. All of our fellow-men are in danger, and the Lord wants to save each one by sending him to save some one else. We should ask ourselves the question seriously all the time, Am I coming, to the full extent of my ability, to the help of the Lord all the time? The fact that the Lord calls us to help Him is a thought to thrill us again and again with the determination of faithfulness.

Y. M. C. A. Jubilee Convention

The Young Men’s Christian Association of North America will hold a jubilee convention in Boston, Mass., June 11–16. The first Y. M. C. A. to be organized in the United States was in Boston in 1851, and this convention is to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the event. Many prominent persons will be in attendance, and the meeting is promised to be one of the big events of the country for this year. The executive officer of the committee on arrangements is Rev. James H. Ross, 17 Lancaster St., North Cambridge, Mass., who will be glad to answer any inquiries.

True Sabbath-Keeping

In the “Signs” of April 17, page 8, in the article entitled “Our National Bribe,” the writer says: “It is certainly a good thing that men should keep Sabbath. It is essential that they keep the day which they believe to be the Sabbath; and happy is that people or that individual that is found so doing.” What the writer should have said was, “It is essential to true Sabbath-keeping that men keep the true Sabbath.” He did not design to teach that the government should make men keep Sabbath, nor that wrong is right if only we do it conscientiously and zealously.

STOCKHOLDERS’ MEETING.

By T. A. Kilgore

Special Notice.

THE regular annual meeting of the stockholders of the Pacific Press Publishing Company was announced in due legal form, to be held in this city on April 22. But so many of our stockholders and leading men being absent at the conference in Battle Creek, Mich., a quorum was not present to transact business, and the meeting was adjourned until Tuesday, May 21, 1901, at 9:30 o’clock A. M.

This meeting is called for the purpose of electing a board of seven directors, and transacting any other business that may properly and legally come before the meeting.

A full report of the workings of the institution during the past year, together with reports from our branch offices, will be given. The meeting will be one of special interest, and it is hoped that just as far as consistent every stockholder will be present, either in person or by proxy. A special circular has been sent to all shareholders, giving instruction in regard to proxies, in case of any who can not themselves be at the meetings. This matter should have the prompt attention of every one interested.

T. A. KILGORE, Secretary.
