The Training of Children

By Elisabeth Burns-Howell

By Elisabeth Burns-Howell

Value of Symbol and Story

How children do love a story! Nor is such a preference peculiar to childhood, altogether, for in this regard, “Men are but children of a larger growth.”

Note how the successful public speaker or teacher recognizes this element in the make-up of his hearers, when he wishes to drive home a telling point in his argument or instruction.

Does he spin an elaborate and extended web of theory, or deduce a long array of abstract principles, however correct and demonstrable, upon those phases of his theme which he wishes most to impress?

Quite the contrary. He knows there is no surer way of killing interest. So he minimizes the amount of theory presented, and packs his discourse with concrete example, with objective illustration, with plain pictures for the imagination, and pertinent phrases to catch the ear — thus locking in the memory by numerous familiar tokens the new, and it may be hitherto unwelcome, concept.

The Saviour applied this method in its highest degree of excellence, in His teaching, by means of parables.

What clear imagery, what complete mental pictures, allied to the perfect moral precept or spiritual inference, does the mind recall at mention of the sower, the tares, the leaven, the hid treasure, the pearl of great price, the good samaritan, the lost sheep, the good shepherd, the talents, the ten virgins, etc. “From the known to the unknown” and “from the concrete to the abstract” are trite, but none the less true, principles of pedagogy.

And every mother is or ought to be a natural pedagog — she is certainly the first teacher that Nature provides, and the most constant.

Work of woman?—school work; the home is her school, All Nature her primer, her Bible the rule That she solves problems by; she teaches and learns Life-lessons in patience and power by turns.

Now since she must and does teach, whether graciously and effectively, or unwillingly and irksomely — “as a slave scourged to his dungeon” — depends largely upon the methods employed.

I remember how as Froebel students in training for the art of kindergarten — for that beautiful system of child training is truly an art — it was impressed upon our minds that there were two distinctions in motherhood — physical and spiritual. Both phases may and should be included in the same individual, but often the reverse is true.

The veriest Hottentot is capable of physical motherhood, that is, she bestows upon the child his physical or animal being with such faculties of a higher order as he may or may not possess. But to pass beyond the mere animal or bodily existence and its needs to the development of the higher side of the child life, to minister to the unfolding mentality, to lead the ascending soul in its upward process of expansion, to kindle the awakening spirit,—this is spiritual motherhood.

It may be found in a high state of perfection in the antiquated spinster, even, who mothers the tiny tots in the village school; and be wholly lacking in the brusque, material sort of individual who is too busy providing for the bodily needs of her brood, to be “bothered” with trying to teach them. She leaves that to the teacher at school, or in the church, because “that’s their business,—housekeeping’s mine.”

Who has not seen the look of disappointment on a little inquisitive, upturned face, as some really deep question agitated the tender mind, when mother was “too busy”—she seems always too busy to answer or explain—“Run along now with your nonsense,” or “Don’t bother me with your questions, ask your teacher,” etc.? Is it small wonder such mothers lose the confidence of their children in later years, at a time when such confiding would often prove their salvation?

Now this may seem an exaggerated type. In these days of mothers’ clubs, child study circles, etc., her number is diminishing, we are happy to note. But memory will furnish you with more than one such example, if you will take a little excursion with her into the past. At least it is so in my case. Through some seven years of public school work, how many women I recall who were willing enough to cook and sew and wash and iron for their children, and did it well, too; but to tell them stories — O, dear, no! they simply couldn’t, and — “What did the children go to school for if it wasn’t to learn, and what was the teacher paid for if the mothers had to do the teaching?”

In those days the child study leaven was just beginning to work, and the result of our efforts as teachers, to interest mothers in the observation of the mental and moral characteristics of their offspring, with a view to a better coöperation with the work of the school, was sometimes amusing, if its real meaning had not been too tragic.

However, it is not for the indifferent home teacher that these lines are penned — she is simply referred to as an example of warning in passing — but as an effort to be of some little help to that legion of the faithful who cease not to toil for their precious charges day and night —

“To fashion fair garments from foot up to head, To weave or to spin, and to bake daily bread.”

But excellent and necessary as this all may be, they do not stop here. Tho her heart is by the hearthstone, her eye is set heavenward, and thither she leads her little flock day by day.

“Rising up early,” the key-note of a glad good morning is sounded in a snatch of song to greet the new-born day. The children catch the humor, and start their little race merrily.

But Mary is inclined to grumble about the cold, so while they are all hurried through the ordeal of ablutions and the morning toilet, mother tells a little story of the Eskimo in his frozen home of ice and snow. This pleases Jimmie, in particular, for he has just learned a new Eskimo song at school, and is simply bursting with information on the habits and customs of the queer little dwellers of the North. So mother allows him to finish the story while she goes about the breakfast. Meanwhile Mary has finished lacing her shoes, and really feels quite comfortably glad that she doesn’t live in the frigid zone, where she “surely would freeze to death.”

So her little “grouch” against the crisp winter weather is much more effectually cured by this adroit lesson in contrasts than could have been effected by any amount of scolding for her fault-finding, or a lecture on the beauty and duty of a contented spirit.

Thus this wise mother manages her little brood tactfully, in all their childish vicissitudes. For example, Harriet, age five, is inclined to greediness. So while she “helps” mother at the baking, and begs for “just one more cooky”—she has already had three—she is kindly, even laughingly, tho none the less firmly, refused, with the remark that she “had better look out or she’ll be like Naughty Nannie.” Now Harriet has had experience with mother’s stories, so a hint is sufficient to cause the cooky to immediately pass into oblivion, and she pricks up her ears for the narrative.

Now

IF I were to give you a motto to go through life with—one that would stand you for a warning and counsel in any strait in which you might find yourselves, I would give it in this one word “NOW.”

Don’t waste your time, your strength, and your opportunities, by always meaning to do something—do it! Only weakness comes of indecision. Why, some people have so accustomed themselves to this way of dawdling along from one thing to another, that it really seems impossible for them to squarely make up their minds to anything. They never quite know what they mean to do next; their only pleasure seems to consist in putting things off as long as possible, and then dragging slowly through them, rather than begin anything else.

Don’t live a single hour of your life without doing exactly what is to be done in it, and going straight through it from beginning to end. Work, play, study, whatever it is, take hold at once, and finish it up squarely and cleanly, and then do the next thing without letting any moments drop out between. It is wonderful to see how many hours these prompt people contrive to make

of a day; it’s as if they picked up the moments that the dawdlers lost. And if you ever find yourself where you have so many things pressing that you hardly know how to begin, let me tell you a secret: take hold of the very first one that comes to hand, and you will find the rest fall into file and follow after like a company of well-drilled soldiers; and tho work may be hard to meet when it charges in a squad, it is easily vanquished when brought into line. You may have seen the anecdote of the man who was asked how he accomplished so much in life. “My father taught me,” was the reply, “when I had anything to do, to go and do it.” There is the secret—the magic word “NOW!”—Selected.

The Mother’s Work

“I took a piece of living clay, And gently formed it day by day, And molded with my power and art A young child’s soft and yielding heart.”

The Girl as Daughter

By Mrs. M. C. Du Bois

By Mrs. M. C. Du Bois

THE home that is not blessed with one girl at least is denied one of Heaven’s choicest blessings; for a bright, loving girl adds greatly to the happiness of the home. Of course there are girls who bring sorrow instead of joy; but the well-trained girl, who has been brought up to obedience and self-control, is a comfort to her parents.

The daughter has her place in the home, a work which only she can do. She ought not to ask or expect all the easy, pleasant work. She should, as soon as old enough, step into line, and take her share in the responsibilities of domestic life. She can be ears, eyes, feet, and hands for mother. If she will but use her eyes, she will see many opportunities for helpfulness. She can be feet for mother by saving her weary steps; hands, by responding to the many calls upon her here and there. If there are small children in the family, there is always a little face that needs washing, a little head to comb, a hurt toe or finger to tie up. She can do these things, and save mother a little.

In some homes, the daughter feels herself above these little home ministries. She has no time. She has her music, painting, fancy work, circles, charity work, and so on. She really has no time for such homely work as washing dirty faces and combing the tousy head of a little brother or sister. This outside work is all right; music and painting are good to a certain extent; but the girl who would be a real blessing, to her parents in particular and the world in general, must know something of the real, practical side of life. No girl is prepared for an all-round useful life who knows nothing of the mysteries of the kitchen. So the daughter should take her place by the mother’s side, and know how to operate the household machinery.

Perhaps some girl will say, “Mama keeps plenty of hired help; you don’t catch me soiling my hands and spoiling my complexion over the cook-stove.” This may be true, my dear girl; but you ought to know how to cook healthful food, and how to manage and care for a home, even tho you may always be able to hire competent help.

A knowledge of housework degrades none. It is a mistaken idea that our girls should be kept out of the kitchen as if it were a pest-house. Right here is where the mother often makes a sad mistake. She thinks that to make her daughter a lady is to dress her in fine clothes, and bring her up without work. Hundreds of girls are growing up with this false idea. But is there anything unladylike in making bread, cooking a relishable dinner, making a shirt, doing a washing, if one has the strength, mopping a floor, or washing dishes?—No, indeed. Ignorance, idleness, and fine clothes never yet made a true lady.

The girl, then, to fill her place in the home, needs to be taught housework in all its details, as one branch of her education. On the other hand, the daughter should not be made the family drudge; all the hard, unpleasant work should not be put upon her young shoulders. Far from this. She needs recreation, and the mother should enjoy it with her as often as she can.

STRUGGLES OF RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

A New Pamphlet for Use in Religious Liberty Work

66 pages. Price 10 cents.

During one of the strongest campaigns for Sunday legislation ever waged in California, Pastor J. O. Corliss, who has given the best years of his life to religious liberty work, wrote a series of articles for this paper, covering the struggles through which the state has passed in maintaining its religious freedom. In these the whole question of religious liberty and the principles involved were so clearly set forth as to create a strong demand for this matter in permanent form, to be used in personal study, and as a document to educate the people on this intensely important question. In response, a most attractive ten-cent pamphlet with the above title has been issued, and is in circulation. Its chapter headings are:

Introduction — Early History;
Court Decisions Regarding California Sunday Law;
California’s Unique Position Compared with Other States;
California’s Noble Stand Against Religious Legislation;
Use of the Initiative and Referendum;
A Candid Appeal;

Appendix, consisting of text and analysis of proposed law.

The principles of liberty could hardly be more strikingly presented than in connection with the story of the efforts of a great state to be free from all forms of religious legislation. The presentation is so live and of such current interest, that the pamphlet can not fail to appeal to thinking people everywhere. A liberal use of it will have a most telling educational effect in the great campaign that must continuously be waged in behalf of liberty. Send $1.20 for one dozen copies to your tract society, or Pacific Press, Mountain View, California.

Helping Together

By Editor

THERE are constantly coming to this office requests for this paper for (1) those who are poor and unable to take the paper; (2) for mission work among prisoners and others otherwise confined or secluded; (3) for public reading-rooms; (4) for general missionary work in foreign fields by our missionaries; (5) for general missionary work in various phases. Sometimes there are calls for tracts in foreign languages as well as English. It is not possible for the publishing house to meet all these requests. Publications are sometimes published at a loss to the house. We felt sure that many more of our readers would be glad to help us in this work. Thus may we bring together those who have no time or opportunity to do missionary work, but who are able to help others who have the time and opportunity, but not the means. Who will contribute to our Coöperation Fund?

A Fearful Condition.

One woman with a name that is a decided misnomer, Mrs. Goode, a keeper of a house of ill fame in New York City, of whom it is said that she would be called an intelligent woman but for her business, finds no shame in that business, counts it legitimate and necessary, and objects only to the demands made by corrupt police—demanding at least one third of her receipts. She also asks that a respectable commission, like a railroad commission, should supervise the business and see that it is carried on decently, and that no white-slave traffic is allowed, and no robbery by the police. She puts as the number of girls who are in this business, 35,000 in New York City, but among these are a large number of shop-girls who do not receive wages enough to support them. She does not present this as a matter of vice or wickedness, or the opposite. That evidently does not come into her mind at all, at least into her argument; it is a matter of simple, pure business, this trading in human souls and in human bodies. And evidently there are thousands of others who look at it in the same way, both men and women, and it is just this that prevents its abolition, for it ought to be utterly abolished. It is a fearful thing to lose all moral sense, to prostitute morality to pure commercialism.

New Series on Bible Doctrines

By Editor

We begin in this issue a new series of articles covering some of the great doctrines of the Bible. Prominent in this, of course, is man's relationship to God, and salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. This the SIGNS OF THE TIMES deals with always as preeminently first above all things, but interwoven in this great subject there are other important doctrines, such as, “The Scriptures and Their Importance and Inspiration,” “The Law of God and Its Binding Obligations,” etc. The first of a series on “The Second Coming of Our Lord,” is given in this issue, dealing with the first advent, and the promises and prophecies relating to that, with their definite fulfilment. We also begin another series on “The Law of God,” what that law is. We commend, too, the article on “Christian Unity” by Mrs. E. G. White, showing the only true basis of Christian unity. We also begin in this number a series of short “Studies on the Book of Ephesians,” in which we shall endeavor to develop some of the great and important truths contained in the wonderful book. The studies will not be long, but will aim to cover quite thoroly the entire book.

Unconfirmed Report of Adrianople Massacre

A story is told of the massacre of 30,000 Christian men, women, and children, in the besieged city of Adrianople, by the Moslems, at the first breaking out of the war. This is based on a letter said to be written to J. J. Besdan, but the news is not confirmed.

The God a Man Serves

That to which a man bows continually, which molds his life and shapes his conduct, is his god, whether spelled with an initial capital or not. With some it is Mammon, with some Bacchus, with some Mars, with others fame and pleasure. There may be no shrine or image of the god in his home, but it is in his heart, and his conduct shows that it is acknowledged master of his life. There is but one God, Jehovah, the God of love, and of righteousness, and of power, who makes His worshipers free. All other gods enslave, dwarf, and finally destroy their worshipers.

Demand for Better Writers

The “Christian Science Monitor” tells us there is a great demand for better writers. Good handwriters are a necessity, we are told, in the great counting-houses of large cities, to do work which can not be done with the typewriter. There has been a great falling off in nice writing within the last few years.

Why Signs of the Times Rejects Advertising

By Editor

The “Signs of the Times” does not have an income from advertising. It can not, consistently with its principles, accept a vast amount of advertising that is offered, some at good prices. It does not believe that it can advocate things for its readers which are not in every sense genuine and honest. It therefore must depend upon the subscription price which it receives for its income. Many journals live, not so much from their subscriptions, as from their advertising. For instance: the Delineator charges a rate of $70 per inch; Munsey’s Magazine, $42 an inch; the Woman’s Magazine, $84 an inch; McClure’s Magazine charges $30 for an inch of advertising space; and the Ladies’ Home Journal, $6 per line, or $84 per inch. The Comfort magazine has an inch rate of $70; the Woman’s Home Companion of $35; and Everybody’s $25. The Ladies’ Home Journal has a circulation of over 1,000,000.

Our Covenant Lord

Micah 7:18, 19

Who is a God like unto Thee, That pardoneth iniquity, And passeth by the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He retaineth not His anger forever, Because He delighteth in mercy. He will turn again, He will have compassion upon us; He will subdue our iniquities; And Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

Our Next Issue

By Editor

Some of the important articles in our next number are as follows: “The Necessity of Seeking for Christian Union,” “The Personal, Visible, Literal Coming of Our Lord,” “The Character of God’s Holy Law,” a “Review of India During 1912” (from our special correspondent), and the closing of the excellent home article on the “Training of Children.” In addition to this, we have a Bible reading on the “Power of the Word,” and the other departments of the paper, such as Editorial, Question Corner, etc., will be filled full of important matter. Such is the paper that we are giving from week to week. We hope that our readers will help us in extending its circulation far and wide.

Uneasy Lies the Head That Wears a Crown

“Uneasy Lies the Head That Wears a Crown.”—Better than his creed was an anarchist in Italy, who was chosen from his clique to assassinate King Victor Emmanuel. Rather than do that, he attempted suicide. In his excitement, doubtless, he had sworn to carry out whatever was required of him, but better moments came to him after the excitement was over. On December 23, Sir Charles Hardinge, viceroy of India, was seriously wounded and an attendant was killed by a bomb hurled at the viceroy from a housetop, as he was entering the new capital in state to-day. The bomb struck the howdah, or basket, of the viceroy’s elephant, killing the attendant instantly. It was of these very times that the Word tells us the days of Noah were a type,—the earth was filled with violence.

Is There a Secret Coming of Christ?

Is there a secret coming of Christ? So we are told by some who believe His coming to be near at the present time, that first He is coming, and will snatch away in this coming those who are ready for Him, which together constitute the bride. No one will see Him come, no one will know when the holy ones are taken away. We will simply find them gone, and by and by He is coming again with these, in power and great glory. These views are based upon various terms used in the original Scripture, such as “parousia,” “epiphany,” and “apokalupsis,” in connection with the second coming of our Lord. Do they refer to one event, or to several events? These will form a part of the study in the article on the second coming of our Lord in our next issue.

A Critical Study of the Book of Mormon

We have received Part I of “A Critical Study of the Book of Mormon and Mormonism,” to be issued in ten parts monthly, by the Rev. T. C. Smith, 237 W. First Ave., Denver, Colorado. The price complete for the ten numbers is $1.00, single copy 15 cents. From our reading of the first, we should judge it to be a clear, candid investigation of Mormonism,—not a tirade, not a series of papers filled with vituperation or malicious statement, but a calm study of the book itself,—the origin of the book, its doctrines, etc. Certainly what we have read of the first number commends the others.

Boy Survives Hurricane at Sea

In the awful hurricane which passed over Jamaica several weeks ago, there was a little boy by the name of Willie G., a colored lad, blown away on a coconut-palm. He was twenty hours at sea. When picked up he was asleep. He explained that he ensconced himself in the crotch of the tree, ate the only coconut on the tree, said his prayers, and resolved to wait; and when he came to, he was on the Foxton Hall Steamer. If he is a sincere Christian, he certainly will believe that the Lord heard his prayer.

In the Trail of the Sunset

A beautiful booklet has come to us just recently, entitled “In the Trail of the Sunset.” It is a story of the trail of the Sunset train, Southern Pacific, told in a light, catchy way, of what one will see on the Sunset from New Orleans to San Francisco. Barring the cigars and drinking, it is certainly a nice little sketch of the journey. It is beautifully printed and gotten up. The Sunset train is known to be one of the best in the world.

Panama Canal Nearing Completion

The Panama Canal opening is drawing near, and, it is said, will be ready next summer. A vessel is to pass from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and this vessel will not be a big, famous vessel, but some small water craft. $322,541,468 has been spent up to date on the canal.
