My Guide

Mrs. S. L. Stout
I sought a guide, and one replied: “Take Wisdom. She will lead through strife, Through life, to fuller life.”
Another said: “Take Power. He will teach The mastery of men; And thou may’st wield a scepter then.”
A high voice cried: “Take Fame. His trumpet shall peal forth thy name, And thou shalt live, though dead.”
Another said: “Take Pleasure; For she leads by laughing waters And soft, grassy meads.”
And still another said: “Take Duty, And do full work; And life shall have true worth.”
I stood bewildered ’mid the throng. The choice once made is long; And it were sad to lose.
A new voice spoke, serene and free: “Be not afraid, come thou, And follow Me.”
I knew Him by the robe He wore, And pierced hand; still more, The splendor on His brow.
I chose my guide, and all the rest— Wisdom, pleasure, power, fame— Are mine who love His name.
All, all, I found in Him, my Guide. My doubt had fled; my feet were led By Christ, the Crucified.

The Good Ground

ONE of the Great Teacher’s greatest parables has a point for preachers that is not given in the Scriptures.
“Behold, a sower went forth to sow.”
And the ministers came and said, “Master, explain to us the parable.”
And he said: “The sower is the minister, and the seed is the word, and the field is the congregation. The wayside is the closed mind, the complacency of the self-satisfied. They listen to the word, but it does not sink in, if it is not in accord with their preconceived ideas. The rocky ground is the lifelong habits of the aged. They may receive the word gladly, but it cannot root itself. The thorns are the cares and interests of busy men and women in life’s fevered middle years. They give ear to the word, but there is not room enough in their minds to grow. And the good ground is the open, fertile soil of childhood.”
There is no lack of evidence that the impressions of youth are the abiding ones. A few years ago a friend of mine, who had fallen away from the church, lost his wife. He related soon afterwards a little of his religious experiences. Up to the time that he was twelve he had been taken to a conservative church and Sunday school, where very definite doctrine was taught. Then his home was broken up, and he went to live in another town where he was sent to a church that boasted of its “liberality” and lack of theological creed. Later he went to a technical school, and took up a scientific career. When sorrow fell, a sorrow that shook the very foundations of his life, he cast about for help and support. As he searched his mind for light, he discovered that the only religious ideas that had remained were those gained while he was in the earlier church, ideas from which he thought he had been emancipated. The hand that planted that early seed was the hand that now had given him food to eat. . . . We preach to childhood and youth because this is the seedtime of life.—Christian Advocate.

NOW READY

Through Early Childhood

By Arthur Whitefield Spalding and Belle-Wood Comstock, M. D.
FROM the third to the ninth year of the child is the field of this volume. This period is recommended to be all embraced in the pre-school experience; and for the teaching of the child in the home four distinct lines of parent-and-child education are carried simultaneously. These embrace home government, education through story-telling and nature study, hygiene and health habit formation, and a line of home culture that embraces industrial education, character training, and spiritual development.
“Through Early Childhood” presents an entrancing world of companionship and training in which parents and children mingle. The Christian home is here seen in its most charming and inspiring aspects.
The book is divided into twelve sections—one for each month of the year. Notice how interesting each section heading is:
Starting Childhood Great, Wide, Wonderful World Inside and Out To Know and to Do Mysteries and Sanctities The Books of God Growing Up Sermons and Smiles Sciences of Mind and Body Princes of the Realm Looking Up Farewell to Childhood
