MANNER OF CHRIST'S COMING. By M. C. Wilcox. This gives the original Greek of such words and terms as refer to the different “comings” of Christ, proves conclusively that the second coming of Christ will be personal and visible, and shows the harmony of Scripture teaching on this important subject. The Negro in Boston.

— Zion's Herald, a prominent Methodist journal of Boston, has been investigating the condition of the colored man in Boston. It finds that they are colonized in that city, not because they do not desire to live elsewhere, but renters of houses will permit them to live nowhere else. They have been forced out of the barber shops, have little chances of employment as skilled mechanics, or clerks even in establishments kept by colored men. The opportunities for advancement in business for the colored man are greater in Atlanta, Ga., than in Boston; the Herald thus sums up its findings:—
“We fail to see any difference in the nature of the feelings against the Negro north or south of Mason and Dixon's line. It is a mere matter of the way they are expressed.”
Which shows that human nature unchanged by the grace of God is the same everywhere,—essentially selfish. Jesus Christ is no respecter of persons.

Out of Its Sphere.

The Chicago Times-Herald gives the following as a part of the summary of the recent decision of the Federal Supreme Court sustaining the Georgia law against the running of trains on Sunday:—
“The decision sustains the state law, on the ground that it is a legitimate exercise of the police powers belonging to each state. Under that power the Legislature may provide for the health, the morals, and the general welfare of the people, and, if it is deemed necessary to their peace, comfort, and happiness, to say nothing of the public health and public morals, that one day in each week be set apart by law as a day when all business shall cease within the borders of the state.”
With all due respect to the high authority giving utterance to such sentiments, we must dissent therefrom. The matter of morality and religion lies totally outside of the legitimate sphere of legislature and court; for the simple reason that legislation can not change hearts, nor can court decisions alter individual opinions respecting religion. Religion is a matter of personal relation between man and his God, and is above all human legislation. Morality has to do with motive and intent, which human law can not control. The Sabbath is wholly a religious institution. The Supreme Court should have set the Georgia law aside, and plainly told the state government that with laws relating to the observance of religious institutions it had nothing to do. But the Supreme Court is, with the other branches of government, simply fulfilling prophecy.

Articles of Interest

We shall in the near future publish four interesting articles from the pen of A. T. Jones on Catholicism and Christianity, with the vital differences set forth between the two systems. These should help our friends to extend the circulation of our paper.

The Two Great Prophetic Books.

The two great symbolic prophetic books of the Bible are Daniel and the Revelation. The rise and fall of the great empires of the world, their relation to the false and true church, the outcome of earth’s sad history, and the final triumph of the good, are set forth in these wonderful books with more or less detail. We hope soon to publish some articles of interest on these great subjects.

The Articles on Romans

The Articles on Romans.—That most interesting and instructive series of articles on the book of Romans, by E. J. W., is now drawing to a close. There will be three more after this issue. We have received a number of requests that they be put in book form; but this will rest largely with the author. We hope that the majority of our readers have studied the remarkable book of Romans as never before, and stored up its words in their heart.

The Christian’s Heavenly Citizenship

The citizenship of the Christian is not here. Here he is but a “pilgrim” and a “stranger.” Says the apostle: “For our conversation [“citizenship,” R. V.] is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Phil. 3:20.

Now Is the Time.—

Now is the time to work for a larger circulation for the SIGNS OF THE TIMES. It is true that an exciting political campaign is on, but all the people are not wholly absorbed by it. In fact, there are elements in this political campaign that will naturally lead men to think beyond the things that are to the things that are coming. The signs of the times are ominous, and show that the Lord is near at hand. Men and women are thinking of these things; help them to think aright by placing before them the SIGNS OF THE TIMES. It is only $1.00 a year.

THE MOST CONVINCING PROOF.

THE immortality of the soul is neither taught nor even assumed in the word of God. No such attribute as immortality or deathlessness is ever predicated of the soul or spirit or being of sinful man. Man, apart from Christ, is without life. Were it not for the second coming of Christ, and the resurrection, which takes place at his coming, his own people, even, who sleep in death, would never live again, and none would be made immortal. See 1 Cor. 15:13–20, which shows that a resurrection is necessary in order to a future life, and 1 Thess. 4:16, 17; 1 Cor. 15:51–55; Matt. 16:27, where it is expressly stated that this resurrection, the boon of immortality, and the eternal reward, will take place when Christ comes the second time. And yet people believe in the immortality of the soul, as they believe in the Sunday-sabbath, despite the teaching of the Bible, and because of early teaching, feelings, impressions, etc. As an illustration of dependence on this sort of evidence, here is what a noted Bible teacher, Mrs. Sarah B. Cooper, of San Francisco, whose weekly Bible class has been known for years, has to say:—
“I have stood beside sixty-seven death beds, and watched the gradual receding of the physical faculties and the quickening of the spiritual. In the cases of consumptives oftentimes I have heard them call out the name of some dearly loved one who had gone before, and the look of glad recognition as they passed from earth does more to convince me of the truth of the resurrection belief than all the books ever written. There must be immortality of the soul.”
But this is no proof at all. God gives glorious visions of the future to loved ones to cheer them as they fall asleep; but this is not proof of life beyond the grave. The Gospel of Christ, which tells us that the dead sleep, is, or ought to be, to a Christian all-convincing proof that life is assured to the righteous, that man has not inherent immortality, and therefore a resurrection is necessary.

“Obedient to the Faith.”

The following was clipped from the Observer, of Chicago:—
“Rev. Lyman J. Fisher, a retired Baptist minister, has resigned from the board of education of Middletown, O., giving as his reason that after a lifelong study of the Scriptures he had come to the conclusion that Saturday was the Sabbath day. As most of the examinations fall on Saturday, it hurt his conscience to err longer. The resignation was accepted.”
There will be many more such instances, as the Spirit of God descends upon his children in “the latter rain.” Sabbath reform—reform on the seventh day, or Bible Sabbath—is in God’s order. Man can not stay it; fines, imprisonment, chain-gangs will but help it on. And every soul who loves God and who is alive at his coming, will be found on that side. It is not a matter of any denomination, but of faith in God’s word, and, as of old in Pentecostal seasons, we expect to see a great company of priests or preachers “obedient to the faith.” Come on, brethren; it is God’s voice that is calling.

United States History.

Every person in this land who is old enough ought to know something of its history, but how few have an intelligent understanding of the main facts! How many readers of the SIGNS ever read a work on United States history, to say nothing of a careful study of the subject? We presume very few comparatively, especially among the older ones. Well, the SIGNS of THE TIMES has made arrangement with a writer of history, Prof. Charles Morris, for a number of articles on United States history. Professor Morris is the author of “Half Hours with American Authors,” “Civilization: an Historical Review of Its Elements,” “Decisive Events in American History,” “The Aryan Race,” etc. These articles will be both interesting and instructive, outside of the more dreary text-book style and field. These articles alone will be worth the price of the paper, and will be a great help to our friends in extending its circulation.

Sunday Legislation

It creeps in everywhere. The Railway Commission of Massachusetts has set itself up as priest and judge. It has forbidden a company wholly engaged in the excursion business using its boats on Sunday, and limited the boats of a regular transportation company to two trips each way on that day, expressly forbidding the lowering of fare, or doing anything else which would turn the trip into an excursion. The New England Sabbath League is warring against all pleasure resorts that run on Sunday. That is, all the wickedness of the pleasure, all the evil of the excursion, is due to the day! Such legislation, decisions, and efforts are primarily for the religious day, and are anti-Christian and anti-American, according to the Christianity of Christ and the America of its founders one hundred years ago.

A Lesson from the Heat

ONE of the judgments which is to come upon the world in the last days on account of its sin is thus stated by the prophet: “And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues; and they repented not to give him glory.” Rev. 16:8, 9. That time is not yet; but the heat record throughout the east for the last two weeks, estimating the number of deaths to be over one thousand, gives somewhat of an idea of how it may be when God withdraws his Spirit from the world and men are left to the effects of the sin they have chosen. There may be repentance now; let us heed the lesson.
