THE NEW TRACT

THE above is the cove design of the first of the four tracts which have been so extensively noticed in the Review. It first takes up the request of the Greeks, “We Would See Jesus,” and follows on with the following sub-titles: The Name Jesus; We Would See Him for We Love Him; Yet We Would Not See Him as He Was; No, We Would See Him as He Is; We Would See Him Coming in the Clouds; And We Shall Be Like Him.

The author then goes on to show the Scriptural Foundation for this Blessed Hope; that this coming will be personal; that only those who love Him will be saved. Following this we have a description of the goodly land, and an earnest invitation to the reader to prepare for a home in that blessed place.

The Heralds of His Coming

“The Heralds of His Coming” is the title of one of the most comprehensive and striking tracts on the signs of the times ever published. It is No. 51 of the Apples of Gold Library. It asks the questions “Is the end near?” and “May we know the time?” and answers these questions Biblically. Here is a partial list of the topics treated: A Literal Coming; May We Know the Time? When Will He Come? The Prophetic Highways; The Time of the End; Assurance for All; Special Signs of His Coming, among which are Increase of Knowledge, Increase of Riches, Increase of Crime, Last-Day Scoffers, Signs in the Sun, Moon, and Stars, Peace and Safety Cry, War Preparations, Great Spiritual Declension, “Know that He Is Near.” A striking diagram is given on page 9, showing to the eye at a glance how eight lines of prophecy and eight special signs (there are many more) altogether witness that His coming is near. It contains 24 pages, retail price 1½ cents. It is a convenient size to enclose in an ordinary envelope.

A Kind Word Each Day

Why not take for a motto this week, I will not let one day pass without speaking some kind word, doing some kindly deed to the weary and needy of soul and body?

Vincennes Calendar

A friend sends us a beautiful calendar of Vincennes, Indiana. It is printed on heavy gray paper, two months to the page, 10x12½ inches with ten halftone views of Vincennes tipped on, and all neatly tied with silk cord. The views include the “Old Fort,” portraits of Gen. George Rogers Clark and Pierre Gibault, leading characters in its earlier history and other historic and modern features of interest. Many thanks.

Who Pay Tithes?

Who Pay Tithes?—Mr. Thomas Kane, 64 Wabash Ave., Chicago, wishes the address of those who have had experience in tithe-paying. He is putting forth effort in proportionate giving, rightly believing it to be the only true way. He will find thousands among the readers of this paper who not only gladly pay tithes of their incomes as the Lord’s due, but make free-will and thank-offerings beside. They have proved it, and find it blessed.

What Shall We Call It?

The Springfield Republican points out that while Mr. Rockefeller’s recent gift to Chicago University was $1,000,000, his dividends in Standard Oil amounted to 45 per cent for the year. But this does not satisfy. Notwithstanding the pinching poverty in the East, and the famine for coal, so that many have had to resort to the burning of oil, Mr. Rockefeller has raised the price of kerosene oil, since September, two cents a gallon. From the needy is wrung the million dollars. Is it philanthropy?

For the Uplifting of a Race.

Some men according to the world's standard are born “great.” Some men have greatness thrust upon them through circumstance, and through the tide of affairs and events ride on to fame and fortune. Some men are “great” in physical prowess; some, in beauty of form; some, in art; some, in eloquence. Booker T. Washington is not a great man measured by any of these things. He is not a finished orator, he is not noted for book education, nevertheless, Booker Taliefero Washington is a great man. He has grasped the simple, yet great and comprehensive principles of true education, and by persistent, indomitable will-power pushed forward in them to success. Educators have seen these fundamental principles, but few seemingly have known how to put them into practice. Great buildings and expensive paraphernalia have been demanded before the principles were made effective, and the schools have failed, or have lived at a poor, dying rate. Mr. Washington grasped the principles and put them in practice with what he had—a poor, dilapidated hut and thirty poor, black children. Other men have theorized, he has wrought; and in this age, as in all others, it is the men who do that will be heard. Now, where was one hut and thirty scholars then, is property worth half a million, fifty-nine respectable buildings of all sorts, and a population of 1,400. More than this: There are continually going out from the institute at Tuskegee, Alabama, young men and women, trained in all the useful trades, who are enthused with the principles which Mr. Washington has taught them, to do their part in uplifting the colored race, to save them from the ignorance which is a worse enemy than the race hatred they have to meet. We started to tell somewhat of Mr. Washington's work on the coast. This we will leave till our next.

“Good Times.”

These are good times through which America is passing as a whole, but there are many dark spots on her optimistic robe. Last evening we heard a clergyman thanking God for the increasing spirit of brotherhood among men; but we see little of it manifest in the strife between labor and capital. The sentiment has become prevalent through the diffusion of Christian teaching, but when the test comes, the test which demands the sacrifice of selfish interests, the principle is woefully wanting. The coal strike, which has doomed to suffering whole States of people, was not a striking manifestation of the brotherhood of man as between capitalists and laborers, or as between union men and non-union men. The mob spirit manifest in both the North and South against the colored man, is not an evidence of the growing spirit of the brotherhood of man. The attitude of the stronger nations toward the weaker has the same trend. Prosperity is with certain classes, but many are suffering in poverty, with plenty on every side. But even those who are floating on the highest billows of prosperity do not enjoy it; they rather endure it, waiting in fearful apprehension the engulfing in the expected trough of the sea. Large sums are given by multi-millionaires who, oftentimes, gather it in exorbitant profits and interest from the poor and the needy. The trust spirit has exploited itself till it has become self-limited by its own operations. Soon it will be weeping for more worlds to conquer. All these and numerous other matters similar in character are, dear reader, foretold in the Word of God. We may ignore their warning now, but the results, the consequences, the fruitage we can not ignore.

THE FIRST OF FOUR NEW TRACTS.

By Editor

When the Review and Herald office burned they were about to issue four new tracts, entitled, “We Would See Jesus,” “The Signs of Our Times,” “The Gospel Remedy for Present Day Isms (Spiritualism, Hypnotism, Christian Scientism, Higher Criticism),” and “What Do These Things Mean?” These will be printed in the Bible Students’ Library. In fact, the first is already printed as No. 173 of that library. The manuscript of the next two have come to hand, and will be issued soon. We have not yet had time to examine them. They will be published in uniform size, 16 pages, price one cent each.

The tract first named is an excellent tract. The first page is a special drawing suggestive and striking. The first four pages of reading matter is from the first part of Apples of Gold Library, No. 40, under the same title, by A. T. Jones. Then follows the Bible evidences of the blessed hope, and a strong appeal to the reader. We hope it will have a large circulation. Address the Pacific Press, Oakland, Cal.

True in Part

True in Part.—Dr. Goss, in the Sunday School Times, makes the following comment on “made their feet fast in the stocks” (Acts 16:24):—

Whatever other mistake you make, do not be guilty of the antiquated blunder that you can restrain or extinguish an idea by imprisoning its exponent, and fastening his feet in the stocks. It is like trying to destroy a perfume by treading on a rose, or the juice of the grape by squeezing it in a wine-press. Ideas escape out of the brain like doves out of windows. They passed through prison doors as Jesus entered that room where His disciples were assembled. Nothing can destroy ideas but other ideas. Men ought to be imprisoned for breaking laws, but not with any hope of suppressing their opinions.

And all this is emphatically true, with the exception of the last sentence; but that sentence would justify almost every religious persecution of the past; for when were men ever prosecuted or persecuted but for the one reason, on the part of officials, that they were breaking some law? The three Hebrew children broke a law; did Nebuchadnezzar do right when he cast them into the furnace of fire? He did not seek by that to change their ideas, but to exact submission to his law. Did Darius do right when he cast Daniel into the den of lions because he would not obey the law? And what about the answers of the apostles in Acts 4:19 and 5:29? Men may argue it their duty to execute unrighteous laws; but sometime they will as truly have to give an account to God of their stewardship as the man they imprisoned.

Mixture in This World.

Max O'Rell in writing from London on the extremes of poverty and wealth, thus sums up: “Hell is a city much like London,” once exclaimed Shelley. London is, indeed, an ignoble mixture of beer and Bible, of gin and Gospel, of drunkenness and hypocrisy, of unheard-of squalor and unbridled luxury, of misery and prosperity, of poor, abject, shivering, starving creatures and people insolent with happiness and untold wealth.” And he tells us that he wrote this twenty years ago, and it is the same to-day. He then refers to the death of a once-noted violinist who had squandered several fortunes, and at last died penniless. And he closes, “Sic transit gloria mundi.” So passes the glory of this world. And this world holds out no hope for aught more permanent or satisfactory. There is happiness in it in Christ Jesus, in doing good. It is the training ground for the better world, where we shall meet no extremes of luxury. All in that world will be without want forevermore.

A Good Covenant.

The papers tell of one young lady in California whose heart and hands enter into covenant relation every year to do some deed of blessing every day, some deed to lighten some heavy heart, bring cheer to some discouraged soul, help to some one in need of material things, light to some one in darkness. There is no monopoly in this work. There is a large field—the great needy world—and it is open to all.

God’s Servants Protected Until Their Work Is Done

No one can slay a servant of God till his work is done, if that servant will follow the direction of His Master. Over and over it is said of Jesus when the Jews sought to slay Him, that no man laid hands on Him for His hour had not yet come. He was doing God's work. Storms may arise to destroy, fiends may howl, but God controls. He hath His way in the storm and the whirlwind.
